I was at a cruise-in this evening and came across this brand new COPO Camaro. The owner said he just picked it up two weeks ago. They took it to the track as is the first weekend they had it and ran a best of 8.96 at over 150 mph. He got on it a little when he left and it sounded pretty good.

Here's another COPO I saw at the track recently. I believe this was a 2013.

Here's one I saw at the Super Chevy in Maple Grove in 2011. The owner said he ordered the body panels and interior from GM and hung them on a full tube chassis. It had a full interior with power windows and a 600ci big block running on alcohol. I believe it ran 8.50's that weekend.

Owner says he's taking it to Osceola Dragway tomorrow (Friday) to get some more times on it. Looks really good up close too. We'll see how quick it goes at Osceola.

They are impressive, for sure, but the wheels on the black one are brutally ugly, eek.

The black car is actually a beautiful dark blue, and not only are the wheels super uggo, they are heavier than the base wheels. Base wheels are reportedly 8 pounds each lighter for the fronts and 12 pounds each lighter for the rears. That's 40 pounds heavier overall for the ugly. Owner reports he had originally ordered the base wheels and a different color, but with the same supercharged 350 engine. When this car became available earlier, it was offered to our buyer here in town. Being as he could get this car sooner, he jumped at the chance, ugly wheels and all. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/3gears.gif

Why did I think the COPO's were 427's?

Oh, and X10 on those wheels, my goodness - they would force a train onto a dirt road! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/eek.gif

I believe there are 4 different engine options on the 2014 COPO's. I believe the 427 is only available in naturally aspirated form. I believe the 350 is available naturally aspirated or with two different sizes of supercharagers. This 14 COPO has the top dog engine. I think the owner said it makes over 1,000hp at the flywheel. The color is Blue Ray Metallic, the same color as my 14 Impala 2LTZ.

A beautiful day in the neighborhood, for going to the track that is. The '14 blown blue 350 Copo cranked out it's best yet time of 8.69 @ 155 mph in mediocre air. There are some video's, but I haven't seen them yet. If they get them to me I will see if I can post them here.

Here's some of the videos. No sound yet on a couple of them and crappy cell phone video, but you will get the drift.

I know I'am just a Redneck from NC but can somebody please help me understand how these cars are COPO'S.

Most of us know that 'COPO' in it's true sense means 'Central Office Production Order' as from the GM factory.

These cars appear to be owner modified and Not from GM.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance for knowledgeable replys Gents.

The dark blue 2014 pictured at the top of this thread is an actual GM Copo. Came from the skunk works, authorized by Chevrolet, and built by sub contractors from what I understand. Sorta like the 1964 Ford Thunderbolts were.

Starting in 2012 Chevrolet began building 69 COPO Camaros each year. These are different from the body in white cars in that they are turn key race cars sold by Chevrolet. It's my understanding that there is a lottery and 69 names are drawn so as not to show favoritism. Those 69 lucky individuals are then able to choose the color, 1 of 4 available engines and the transmission. The cars are then shipped as rollers from Canada to Detroit where they are built. These are export cars as they come without heaters and the hole in the roof for the GPS antennae. The roll cages, special headliners and carpeting, seats, wheelie bars, parachutes, front and rear suspensions and the drivetrain are installed once in Detroit. The front and rear bumpers and hoods are also painted and installed there as well. These cars do not have external rear view mirrors, turn signals, windshield wipers, radios or backseats among other things. There is no carpeting in the trunk. Just a fuel cell and dual batteries. There cars do not have a VIN and are not legal for street use. I believe the VIN plate on the 14 Camaro above was simply 2014COPO#23. This Camaro is exactly how it was when the owner picked it up in Detroit. On his way home he stopped at US131 Dragway in Martin MI where he turned an 8.97. His son has since gone 8.69 without any additional tuning.

These cars can't be titled or registered? What is he doing driving it to a car show?

That show was being held on an old farm turned restaurant / hotel / motel / gift shop on about 10 acres of property that has it's own roads and include a covered bridge and other Amish style farm scenery and memorabilia. You just can't see the truck and trailer that got it there because they're in an entirely different parking area. I asked the owner the same question because I thought the background in the pictures looked similar to the area around his house.
