View Full Version : Trim Tag Special Paint Decode

This trim tag paint number on my 70 LS5 supports the handwritten note at the bottom of the build sheet and the inside of the door clearly shows the original color. My questions are:
Could GM have used a paint code from Ford or Chrysler? The color looks like Grabber Blue or the Richard Petty Blue and I don't remember a GM color like this.
Did Benjamin Moore mix paints for the auto industry and is that what the BM in the paint code relates to?

Maybe it is the special Carolina Blue paint like this color

Carolina Blue is paint code 926-96881. The paint on your door panels looks way different than Carolina Blue to me.

Yea, it's darker and looks like Pettys color to me.

----Isnt it unusual that the backside of the door is so thoroughly painted in color? Usually there is primer in the middle?.....Bill S

The floors are completey coated in the original color. I didn't think that was normal either.

Some plants covered the floor pans more than others. I have seen very little body color overspray to very heavy color though admittedly I have not seen one done quite like the one above but maybe it is because that paint covered heavier than other colors. You need to tear out the complete interior and see how the entire inside was painted including primers. If you send me photos I will take a look at it and see if it looks similar to what I normally see.

What does the hand written note say?

Same paint code as the trim tag.

Highly likely it was a "special ask" by the original buyer. There's a Plum Crazy purple 442 and Chevelle out there, remember. Cool car!

Looks like your El Camino SS 454 was ordered by a California Owner as it has the mandatory NA9 Evap System on your build sheet.

It has always been in California.

Mulsanne is Metallic...
It was most likely sprayed by hand which is probably why it got heavy heavy coverage, they used a pressure pot for special order colors and whomever was spraying may have just been spraying material out.

Is the 1001 PA marking on the build sheet the special order paint code seen on the window sticker?

I don't have the window sticker but your question caused me to look at a few other build sheets I have. One of them is a copy of a friend's 70 SS396 that was a Van Nuys car like this El Camino. On his build sheet there are no markings like those that you pointed out on mine.
Does anyone else have a Van Nuys build sheet for a 70 Chevelle or El Camino with those special notes just below the first row of options?

Ran across this. Apparently the 1001PA is a code for paint delete.

1001PA is not a code for paint delete.
It's for charging for special paint. Clearly your car got paint - it's right there on the buildsheet.
I found an internal Chevrolet zone letter stating special paint costs while cleaning out a salesmans file cabinet.
<span style="font-style: italic">Class "A"-a single color price of FREE ordering many multiple vehicles through Fleet/Political sub divisions. Two tones were $27.
Class "B"-a single color price of $32 if ordering 3 or more vehicles at one time through local Fleet. Two tones were $42.
Class "C"-a single color price of $95 for purchases not coming under the heading of any of the above. Two tones were $122.</span>
I have a few buildsheets showing the "PA" code as well and asked Jim Mattison awhile ago what these paint pricing codes meant & his response was:
<span style="font-style: italic">All paint codes with "AA" were no charge items.
The other special paints that you have listed used colors that were either available on other models,or used for other years.
The pricing would also be dictated by the number of units that were ordered in these colors.
It has been a long time Rick since I've needed to recall these pricing codes, however,I specifically remember that 1001HA was a $75 charge and that 1001PA was a $25 charge.</span>

Kurt,
I will choose my words a little better next time. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif
My original post was to try and determine what color 926-BM865 was. Sounds like that answer might be lost to history. I can color match the inside of the doors but a definitive answer would have been preferable.
Thanks guys!

Have you visited here yet: http://chevellestuff.net/qd/paintinfo2.htm
Safe to assume that BM=Blue Metallic?

The 926 code before the BM on the trim tag and on the build sheet means non-metallic paint. The paint inside the door is definitely non-metallic.

The FSO above that I believe means Fleet Special Order.

I have sent the administrator of that web site the pictures of the build sheet, trim tag, and inside of the door. We'll see what happens.
