We all know of the missing 69 Ed Hedrick Yenko Camaro. But what are some of the other more prominent missing muscle cars, both race, production & concept?

Should these be something that most people have heard of, or can local legends play along? There used to be a 67 or 68 Nickey Camaro running the streets around Marysville, KS. back in the early-mid 70's...

Back in 89/90 time frame my wife was attending Slippery Rock Univ and one of the students was driving what I thought was a clone of a '65 GT350 convertible that was Wimbelton White with Lemans Blue stripes. Had the quarter scoops, fiberglass hood and automatic on the floor with no console. I truly thought since there were no brake cooling ducts in the quarter scoops that it couldn't be a real GT350. Found out later that convertible couldn't have the cooling ducts. Also found out later that the only missing '65 GT350 convertible was the white & blue stripe one. Kick myself for not digging further into what the car may have been.

I think that Heavy's orange 69 motion is still missing as well? Dan told me a story of how it was chained to a pole or some such, at a gas station while he was in jail.
Kinda missing, but not, is the 69 LM1 Convertible (Bob Johnson Racing Ent) that Joe Delorenzo broke several records with. That car is known to still be raced today by the Lucas team. I chatted with them about the car and they seemed to not really care about the historical connection...... And did'nt want to sell the car! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

----Mike,,,I remember that building well. Bought my 72 Trans Am right out front from Bill K in 1973. It was his wifes driver for several months but still only had a couple of thousand miles on it. Popped on a set of Daises I already had later that day (day 1?). Then later that year I went over and bought a 73 GMC El Camino. It served its purpose, but I never liked it much. Bill was a pretty decent guy and easy to deal with.......Bill S

The Merollis ZL1s were re-distributed Gibb cars: #11, #24, #32, #37 & #50. I ran the VINs several times back in the ‘80s and none of them were registered to insurance companies. Indications are all of them were recovered and sold at insurance auction. #11 has been in Ohio with the same owner since the ‘70s; #24 was on file as have been junked in MA in 1973. The others could have been junked, used up on the street or may survive as cut up drag cars with no tags. Be aware that the VINs are registered in Canada.

When you say none were registered to insurance companies... were they all registered to others?? Or no registration was found?
Did the insurance companies all register the cars after they were recovered???
Is there any othere evidence that all 6 cars were recovered? just curious...
I dont remember the story.. they were all stolen together?? from the dealer?? You would think it might have been news if they were all recovered?? just saying...

Whatever happened to the Merollis ZL1s occurred in the fall of 1969. By the time of the inquiry the story was already 12 years old so who knows. The story, such as it was, was all five were taken, stripped of their engines/transmissions and other parts and left/dumped someplace. Since they couldn’t be easily moved it is likely they were abandoned wherever they were stripped.
Complicating the issue as new cars they weren’t titled; still on MSO. They were in the possession of the dealer but may have been legally owned by GMAC. Nothing new for them; they probably had thousands of damaged/theft recovered vehicles to process every year. The remains were likely taken to a salvage auction and sold; the new owner gets the MSO. From there who knows? At least two of them were reconstructed and legally registered. The other three may have gone to salvage yards, never to be titled or registered. They would be eventually parted out and destroyed. Maybe one was made into a race car also never titled. Stolen cars that are not recovered are titled to the insurance company that paid the claim and now legally owns them. #43 was stolen in 1972 and is still titled to an insurance company. Three of the Merollis ZL1s had no registration last I checked. That is not to say they were never registered; they just were not at that time. Expired registrations drop off after a few years. There is a difference between title and registration; I do not know if the searches I did looked for both but #43 always came up.

FWIW..I believe #11 was also a theft recovery. Not from Merollis, but it was stolen and recovered. Strange how all these Merollis ZL's got ripped...Easy pickin back then.

The story I heard was his best friend bought the car raced it then got shot by local police and his parents gave it to his best friend which is my wife's uncle.i need to get over to look a little closer. I was told it was in hot rod magazine in the early 70s. I do know its a white car.

I met a guy years ago that had a complete Z-11 engine on the stand in the back of an old shed. He said he bought the whole car back in the early 70's, but only wanted the 427. He pulled the motor, sold the rest and never heard anymore about it. Said the car was silver or light blue and came from back west somewhere.
I don't know how much truth there is to the story, but the engine was definitely real.

Ahhh...here's a Rumor that's been kicking around Western Pa for the last few years:
The other Grumpy's Toy Nova L79 is alive in ultra Rough shape sitting along side a defunct gas station in New Alexandria, Pa.
Home Town of :
Pittsburgh Raceway Park Originaly known as Keystone Raceway Park
The story goes as this: Jenkins sold the Nova at the end of the Season to this local Gas station operator and raced it for years ,off and on at Keystone unlettered,it was still well known as Grumpy's Toy. Now,decades later, the owner lives hermit like in the closed gas station with a rusted shell of an icon near by. (I believe this may be the white one,not the red candy striped car that was totaled)....... Tim Lopata may know of this "storied rumor" for those wanting to turn over a few stones...... I know of a few people who recall the early history and have seen the remnants, albeit unconfirmed by Grump before his passing of the real story.....Hmmmm any treasure hunters on the site ???

Connie Kreski was a true beauty w/ all original parts, her pink Shelby was a '69 Fastback 428 Auto A/C car.
It's Canadian Playmate Dorothy Stratten that was killed by her estranged husband who then offed himself.

As some on the board have known, I've begun writing a book with CarTech titled, <span style="font-style: italic">Lost Muscle Cars</span>. The book will feature 45 stories of cars that have fallen off the map or are missing a significant piece of their history. As most of you know, there's no shortage of significant cars still out there to be discovered.
This book will be handled differently than most in that it will actually be the enthusiasts telling the stories as opposed to a singular author trying to tell all 45 stories. The lineup of cars is a who's who of muscle with 4 distinct categories which are:
1) Rare Muscle Cars
2) Celebrity Owned Muscle
3) Race Cars
4) Prototype/Concept/Show Cars
I have a solid list of cars and stories already submitted but am always looking for more. I'm also looking for a candidate willing to write the story of the stolen Merollis Chevrolet ZL1's and the attempts to locate/document them.
Also, I'm short on stories of missing Oldsmobile's, Mercury's & Buick's. Each story is roughly 1,500 words in length and would need 2-3 accompanying images provided with rights granted by the owner/photographer. If you would like to contribute to this book please feel free to inbox me and I can discuss additional details with you. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

Funny thing is , for years the car was reported to be in the Pittsburgh area. ....the post refers Vicky from Pgh,Pa.
A few things.....period pics that have been posted here on this site before, show the oblong cut on the wheel openings similar to the posted pics clean stripped.
The Traction bars in actual pics of the car show them as Square tubing long bars in Lakewood Yellow with Traction Action & Decals.
These pixs show crew names.
The wheelie bars (SRD) are identical to the first Vega & 70 Camaro Pro Stocks. The 68, which Jenkins kept for quite awhile never had wheelie bars during '68/'69 ......maybe added in 70 or later...
The #'s matching M22 case is suspect....as his racing trans were heavily modified Pro-Shifted internally.and damaged/rebuilt/modified/upgraded and Extrenely abused. Not impossible, but it could've been shelved at one time.
One thing for sure, judging the pics only...
is....there are alot of signs pointing to this '68 being the car.The Cage is similar to what I've seen in many publications from SS & early Pro Stock days.
The car does have a 12 Bolt and NOT a DANA 60.
To Bad we don't see pics as the car was acquired and stages of stripping......
Maybe she has pics....
Verne , are you able to contact them via the site the pics appeared on ?

Another note:.
I do believe Grumpy's '68 was an original SS 396 375 Horse L78......in White.
Rumors had it as an L89 Aluminum Head car which I believe as false.
Not all of his "Toys" Came from Chevy in White.
I'm pretty sure this may have came from Am on R Smith as a purchased car via Chevrolet and not a "Loaner" car as previous cars were.
He did race this car for years with Many different Engines in both Cast Iron, aluminum heads and Aluminum BB along with Small Blocks much later.
It was a Class Car in at least 2 sanctioning bodies AND a Match Racer where you Run what you Bring.
There are alot of guys on this site with Tons of Documents in pics, knowledge and hands on info if they are willing to chime in.
Albeit, there are some "still looking for his cars" that will remain Mum on any and all Factual info they have.

Per that last Grumpy book, it is stated that this car was originally yellow and then re-painted White very shortly afterwards. IF this is the original car, it is a very significant car. This would be the car that defeated Ronnie Sox at the very 1st Pro Stock race in Pomona in early 1970.

When JM did the '69 Camaro book in 1993 he visited with Grumpy to show him the feature on Dave Strickler. Grumpy handed him several folders with paperwork from his race cars. I recall the '69 Camaro paperwork: dealer invoice and window sticker. It was a Dover White L78 and did not come from Ammon R. Smith Chevrolet. They must have had other dealerships.
The Jenkins family probably has much if not all the paperwork for his race cars.

William,
Yes, the 69 Car was White.
There was a lot of magazine and National Dragster print in 69 on that BB SS CAR.
We are referring to the '68 though.
Some of his previous cars didn't come to him with titles either.......
If it was yellow, then is that Yellow I see on the 68 Cowl panel in the pics posted above ?
Or Sikkens high build priner/sealer ?
I wasn't aware of its Yellow origins. ..but I did know only very few of his cars came factory white.
Another thing to note, that Jenkins was quite frugal and not big on pristine condition unscathed cars.
He was a Racer. Not into "show cars"

I looked through archival pics of both the 67 & 68 cars from various times of each year and post years. ...
The 777 appeared as pictured above ONLY on the 67 model (on the Quarter Panels)
68 car had the # on the door, door glass & C pillar (Quarter sail)
So....what's going on . ..?
A converted 67......
The "Origunal" 67,,,,,, supposedly...that is with 2nd Owners
A 68 that someone cloned or fudged years before the current owners got it ???
After all,,,, they've only had this car for 12 years.
Illusion of past ownership in a sellers story is becoming clearer, if its a fudged car, years ago.

Pretty sure that was a different car. That's a 68, I believe, and there was a story going around about it being a Harrell car originally before it was purchased sans engine and trans and converted to full time track duty. 10-12 years ago there was a Vicki and Dale from the same area and they said they had the first Z-28. They said it was a Penske/Grumpy Camaro. Somehow a collaboration of the two. It was red and that was Roger's favorite color so that legitimized it in their opinion. Left front brake drum (Yes, brake drum) had yellow "LF" painted on it like you would see from a junkyard. They said the LF stood for GM Engineer Lou Faux. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif
I think that pretty should much give you an idea of the "legitimacy" of this '68.

In the '68 Nationals video, notice the in-car is Bill driving a '68 Camaro. (No vent window and '68 Camaro interior door trim panel)
That footage was shot at a different time? Did he have a '68 Camaro also at the '68 Nats?

A few pages back I mentioned it looked like the '68 car in the background of the '67 @ the '68 'Nats pic and if so, the '67 and '68 cars seen in the same shot?
Here's the pic again below also one of the '68 car, note the Fram decals in the 1/4 window as the '68 and '69 cars had.
Seems like lots of the '68 and '69 cars in one shot but what else can anyone come up w/ of the '67 and '68 pictured together?

The picture is of the original 67 SS/C, Toy III. It morphed into the A/MP (late 68),as seen in the picture. It was taken at the 68 World Finals. This was its last race before being sold to the Kimballs. The 68 SS/C Camaro is the car you see behind it. The driving footage is the 68 SS/C at the World Finals. The footage of the car pulling to the line is Toy III at the Nats. The frame shot is Toy IV as a B/G at the 69 Nats. It went on to become a match race car and then a Pro Stock car in early 70. Both powered by the 430 ci. Can Am motor. Bill tracked the car down in Jersey in the early 2ks. But it was pretty beat up by then. The 68 Camaro was a Butternut Yellow, L89 when new. Then painted white. It appears to me that the 67 and 68 were both Buternut Yellow when new.(post 618795). I'm seeing the 68 in the Grumpy's Toy's book, at the Worlds as a fresh SS/C being Butternut Yellow(page 79). Bills wearing a white shirt and the white 68 Nova fender is in the shoot. If someone with the book could confirm, I'd feel better. L78racers picture(post 618907) is Toy IV as a washed up P/Stock probably with running gear removed waiting for a new owner.(Bills name also removed) It was taken a Bills shop.

Compare that picture with the picture of Bills shop in 300deluxe79s post(618956) Same shop wall! (Notice also the NED sticker on the wall and Toy IVs rear quarter) So sometime after 72? the car went to Jersey or Brooklyn? Jenkins wanted it back and found it there early 2000s. Looks like there were absolutely one 67, and one 68 Camaro. I assume the true whereabouts of the 67 are known. If so, the story about finding the 777 car is not true. And the question remains, where is the 68 Toy IV?

those shop pictures were late '71/early '72. pictures were taken by the new owners of the '69 camaro. jenkins had used the '69 car to test the vega sm/blk combinations in the fall of '71. here is a shot of him testing at cecil county...

Jerry MacNeishs' '69 book features an 8 page tribute to Dave Strickler. Jerry visited "Da Grump" to present him with a copy. Jenkins graciously signed several copies which Jerry provided to those that helped with the book. He then opened a drawer and handed Jerry a folder containing factory paperwork for many of his race cars. I recall paperwork for the '68 Nova and '69 Pro Camaro. The w/s for the '69 was in the folder. There is good probability paperwork for the '68 Camaro was also in the folder. Perhaps the Jenkins family still has this paperwork.
If you really want to put this to rest, contact the Jenkins family and explain what is going on.

The one thing about Dale & Vicki's car there is no mention of any signs of orange paint. Brooklyn Heavy painted this car orange when he bought it from Jenkins. All that is talked about is Butternut Yellow & white paint. You would think there would be some orange somewhere. Also the picture of the 69 car in the shop is from 1970 sometime. Pennzoil sticker on fender/Cragar sticker on 1/4 panel was 1969/1970. Jenkins switched Pennzoil sticker to 1/4 panel/Cragar sticker to fender for 1971 season.

Has it been definitively determined that the '68 Camaro being represented as a Grumpy's Toy outside Pittsburgh is not the real deal?
They surely are pushing it as an original Grumpy's Toy.

I made up this list because, like most, I used to get very confused by the Jenkins cars.
Its not made any easier by him using the same entry# at a couple of meets.
Pic shows the 779 Toy IV 396cui/375hp car at 69 Winters running SS/D. If it had been 68 it would be SS/C.
777 entry - Toy III - 67 Spring Nats
777 entry - Toy III - 67 Nationals (Not to be confused with 777 Toy VI (69) or Pro Stock 68 car/70 Winters)
789 entry -Toy III - 68 Winters
700 entry - Toy III - 68 Indy
779 entry - Toy IV - 69 Winters
797 entry - Toy IV - 68 Spring
709 entry - Toy VI - 69 Nats
776 entry - Toy VI -
100 entry - Toy VI -
777 entry - Toy VI -

I've heard/read stories over the years that he converted the '67 to look like a '68 body to avoid starting over with another identical car for the '68 season.
Is that false, did he convert it back later to sell ???

There’s a lot of debate over the 67/68 cars - I have also read that the 67 was ‘updated’ to build Toy IV.
HOWEVER - this picture appears to debunk that idea - it shows Toy III in the foreground......with a ‘vented’ hood Camaro with Jenkins signwriting on the trunk lip behind it - so he clearly had TWO 67/8s.
Toy V can just be seen off to the right.
The presence of Toy 5 rules out any chance of the ‘777’ car being the 68 Pro Stocker from 1970 (which also used ‘777’) - so the picture is clearly around 1968.
So the evidence shows they were two different cars it seems. :dunno:

III: Dana Mecum owns it now, strong provenance
IV: Jenkins sold to Brooklyn Heavy, car might have been painted purple and might still be out there
Boyce has a really good book about Grumpy's cars. He avoided delving into theories that can't be verified regarding what happened to IV and 1-2 of the other cars.

No, still not known which car it was.
The Schmidts sponsorship was announced for the '71 season; the Degnan's ad is dated Sept '70. It's known that Penske DX'd a few of his; Degnan's was not a re-distribution dealer. That makes #44 N618396 FG 4-speed the leading candidate. Someone had its engine years ago; chassis still unknown.
