I went up to Stanton on Friday to watch the Pure Stock Drags qualifying sessions. I believe the car count was around 150. Here are a few cars I took pictures of. I hope you guys enjoy them!
This is Steve Arp's LS6 Chevelle. It is a bench seat TH400 car and was running in the 12.90's. It's an original LS6 car with the only addition being the 3 spoke wheel.

This is Tony Ragla's L78 4 speed Nova. It was originally built by Jimmy Johnson and has aluminum heads added to it. It was running mid 12's.

This Astro Blue LS6 Chevelle was a bench seat 4 speed car and came all the way from Louisiana. He was doing monster burnouts and running 13.00's.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15845-img_9024.jpg
This is John Maher's original L78 Chevelle. It's an 07B car that was sold new out of Draper Chevrolet in Saginaw MI. He was running mid 12's.

This is John Maher's original L78 4 speed Chevelle that was sold new out of Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids MI. This one was running 13.00's.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15847-img_9027.jpg
This Belvedere is an original LC Max Wedge car with a bench seat and push button TorqueFlite. The best pass I saw it make was an 11.67.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15848-img_9034.jpg
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15849-img_9032.jpg
This is Mike Leyes' A12 Road Runner. It is a bench seat 4 speed car and was running high 12's.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15850-img_9037.jpg
Here is another original LS6 Chevelle. This was a bench seat TH400 car without cowl induction. The best pass I saw it make was a 12.68.

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15857-img_9061.jpg
This is Rick Mahoney's WM21J Super Bee. It is a bench seat car with a TorqueFlite and was the number one qualifier with I believe an 11.53.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15852-img_9050.jpg
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15853-img_9054.jpg
This 69 Nova was an original L78 car with a bench seat and a TH400. He was going pretty easy on it and was running in the 14.40 range. This car had the heavy duty goose neck radiator in it. I don't know if that was available on the Nova's or not.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15854-img_9052.jpg
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15855-img_9112.jpg
This is Dan Jensen's original W30 442. It's an automatic car and was running mid 13's. I'm not sure who was driving it.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15856-img_9057.jpg
Here is a Silver Metallic A12 Road Runner with a TorqueFlite. I saw him run a string of low 13's.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15858-img_9063.jpg
Charles Lombardi brought this low mile unrestored 409 Impala all the way from Rhode Island. I've seen it run 12.80's in the past, but I'm not sure if he ever got out of the 13's yesterday.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15859-img_9066.jpg
This 440 Hardtop is an original code 09 race Hemi car that is owned by Rick Mahoney. The original owner was at the track on Friday and I talked to him for a little bit. He said he went to the plant to pick the car up so he wouldn't have to pay the delivery charge to the dealer. It is an original 4 speed car that he said ran 12.20's when he had it. Yesterday it had a TorqueFlite in it and was running traction limited 11.60's. They were just doing exhibition passes with it since it is a race Hemi car and those aren't eligible for competition at this event.

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15861-img_9031.jpg
This 73 Formula 455 is an original X code Super Duty car. It had an automatic and was running 13.90's.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15862-img_9070.jpg
This Plum Mist Firebird is an original RA car without a radio and heater and had a column shift automatic. The best pass I saw it make was a 12.54. I believe this used to be Jim Matteson's car.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15863-img_9083.jpg
This is Paul Richard's original L78 Camaro with aluminum heads added to it. He was running 12.40's with it.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15864-img_9103.jpg
These two COPO Camaro's made a few exhibition passes at the end of the day. The blue one is a supercharged 350 with an automatic and the gray one is a naturally aspirated 396 with a 4 speed. They made one side by side pass with the 396 receiving a one second head start. The supercharged car caught him at the top end. Both cars had problems hooking up and weren't running to their full potential. The 350's best pass was in the 8.90's and the 396's best pass was in the 9.70's.

I'm not sure what happened with the last 5 pictures. If anybody can tell me what I did wrong I would appreciate it.
Thanks!

Neat cars. That 1973 would be one of the forty-three SD455 Formulas built (and one of 9 Ascot silver automatics). If it is the one I am thinking of, it would be the automatic with an original warranty service replacement engine that was for sale for a long time on ebay by some classic car dealer (Willholt?) out west. Someone finally bought it a year or so ago and seems to be enjoying the heck out of it now. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif
13.90 is a nice number for an off-the-street SD455. With some fine tuning they really can run. Lots of potential there in carb tuning alone. Nice to see a 8.4-to-1 compression engine running with the monster 12-to-1 compression cars.

Are the PS drag cars the ones that are built to factory specs (purely stock) or are they ones that must appear to be stock but, can have stroker motors? I like both series but, I think I prefer the purely stock.
I wish they would run one of those events at Atco or E-Town; I'd love to see that many pure stock muscle cars running down the track.

Yea, I have seen those cars but, I think they are the FAST cars which, as far as I know, are vehicles that look stock but have internal modifications. As much as I enjoy seeing those cars run I also want to see the Pure Stock cars run. I'd also love to see the L88 Corvettes and LS6 Corvettes run.

These cars are mostly stock. They are allowed 1.5 extra points of compression above the advertised amount for the engine. The engine and transmission need to be available for the year and model of the car. Here is a link to the rules: Pure Stock Drags rules (http://www.purestockdrags.com/p/rules.html)

Here are a couple of more pictures from Friday. By the way all three L88 Corvettes were disqualified for going faster than 11.50. The Kyrta's 72 442 W-30 was also disqualified for I believe having too high of a compression ratio.
This is Ron Hammer's original 71 455HO GTO. It is 53 53 Quezal Gold car with a 263 Saddle interior. The eyebrow stripes were available on non Judge cars, but I don't believe this car originally came with them. This is an automatic car and was running high 12's.

This is one of four 69 Hurst Olds that were there. I'm not sure whose this one was, but it was from IN and didn't have A/C. They were all running high 13's and low 14's.
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/09/full-18308-15906-img_9044.jpg
This is an original W-30 car with a bench seat and a 4 speed. I believe it was running in the low 14 second range.

This is I believe a 425 horse 66 Corvette. I never saw the hood open or the owner around, but it did have the high rpm redline tach. This car was running easy low 14's. Cars running 13.99 and faster needed driveshaft loops so I'm guessing some of these guys taking it easy didn't have them.

Platinum A12 was mine. First time back in 7 years and the Silver Slug was still running 13.3 pretty consistantly. Silver supercharged Stude got me in 2 though. I got him in the third run but his trans was going away.

In the background behind Jimmy Johnsons too fast 69 L88 Corvette you can see most of Peter Simpsons COPO 69 Camaro. It too proved to be too fast just like all three of the L88 Vettes, as the younger Simpson went 11.498 on a 11.499 break out rule while running against Scott Tiemann driving Rick Mahoneys blue Mopar. I'm saying the fast Chevys will have to disconnect the back barrels on their carburetors next year to keep from breaking out. Tis a shame.....

The Biscayne was only out Thursday for Hemmings. Those back rims and tires are not PS.
The Champagne COPO was on her maiden weekend, ended with Ignition issues, but will return with a vengeance, pulled low twelves out of the box:-)

Thanks for posting pictures of Tim. His car made it into the 11's. Pulled heavy tech, came out of the tent, and promptly ran 12.05.
I was one of the 4 '69 H/O 's but I managed to break on Friday. Will back together and ready to roll next year!

The Champagne COPO is a December of 1968 built car and although it is a very nice looking and fast car I beleive it is a COPO tribute car. It was built several years ago and raced at the FAST and Factory Stock event at Martin. Back then it didn't have stripes and had Rally wheels. Please correct me if this is not the same car.
Normal tech is just a visual inspection of the car for safety items and illegal visual modifications. The heavy tech includes a compression check.

Everyone goes through the visual inspection. Correct heads, intake, exhaust, carb, and the other visual stuff. Heavy tech is when you do 'better than expected'. They pump you for cubes, whistle you for compression, and pull a valve cover for lift. Also check other items. Tim passed with flying colors.

I read the rules and didn't see anything about disqualification for running faster than 11.50.
Why would the L-88 Corvette's be disqualified?
John Brown
09-21-2014, 05:55 PM
NHRA doesn't allow anyone to run quicker than 11.50 without a roll bar. That is the rule that put four Chevrolets out this year. Race a Mopar or Ford product and you won't have to worry about breaking out at the PMSCDR race. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Chevy guy here! Good one John!
PS: Thursday one of Rick M's uber cool Mopars went to fast but it was not part of PSMCDR so he didn't get the boots. (I think it was his 64 race Hemi) Later in the day both Orange L88 Vettes got rowdy side by side 11.2, and 11.3. Again not booted out till they went to fast in the race.
Talked to Scott T. After he uncapped the race Hemi exhaust and took a pass.....scary tires broke loose at half track. Every butt puckered in the stands and cool as a cucumber Tim put her straight and carried on:-)
Did they change the threshold? I thought it was 11.00.
