1971 Chevelle SS LS3 - 38,000 Actual Mile Survivor

Hey everyone! After selling my Survivor quality 9,900 mile 73 Z28 to a great gentleman here on the forum, I purchased a 1971 Chevelle SS that has less than 38,000 Actual miles. The car was ordered new at "Charles West Chevrolet" in Maryville Tennessee by a Lady who lived there. She ordered the car with the LS3 402, M20 4-Speed Transmission, Z15 SS Equipment Group, Air Conditioning, and a lot of other "interesting" options like an AM/FM 8Track radio(Surprisingly, this option was more than the engine/transmission together), etc. The car is in extremely great condition inside and out, and is truly untouched other than regular maintenance items. The engine, transmission, and rear end are all numbers matching. The paint is all original except for the passenger's front fender. The interior is also all original down to the floor mats, and is like new. Everything inside is in working order and surprisingly even the A/C still works great! Inside the trunk is the original spare & jack that looks to have never been out of the car, the factory trunk mat, speaker covers, and even a dated warranty sticker on the inside trunk lid from JCPenney from when she had tires installed. Underneath, it still has its original GM spiral shocks & the tags are still in place, markings on the front suspension, spring tags, etc.

My son and I had always wanted to bring the Z to the MCACN show in Rosemont, but never got the time to do so. This year, we are excited to be bringing the Chevelle! We have been carefully detailing it and getting it ready for the show! We can’t wait to show the car, meet people here on the forum, and enjoy the other beautiful muscle cars their!

Protect the lugnuts with your life if they are original... last set of correct NOS tall crown capped lugs I heard about sold for $1000.

I too saw this Chevelle at the Mecum auction,very nice car.The only thing i saw that didn't look correct was the outer corners of the stripes.These stripes have pointed outer corners instead of them being rounded.Either they were touched up at some point or the stripes added to a stripe delete car. I liked this car a lot,congrats on your purchase.

I bet those stripes were added on the car as it was standard to get no stripes on all the SS cars unless you paid extra for the Stripes or ordered Cowl Induction which stripes were added for free with the CI option.
The build sheet will verify if the car came with optional stripes or not.
Let us know what the build sheet has.

These cars came standard with no stripes so you can not call them &quot;Stripe Delete&quot;. You can say &quot;Stripe Delete&quot; when you ordered Cowl Induction and then asked your dealer to DELETE the stripes from your cowl induction option as stripes came standard with Cowl Induction optioned cars.

Thanks for the info Dan,just thought that the stripes were part of the SS package when ordered like the rally stripes on the Z/28's. A 70-72 Chevelle just doesn't look the same without the stripes.

Thanks again everyone! The center caps are the correct &quot;raised logo&quot; GM center caps, and the lug nuts also look to be the correct lug nuts that came on the car from the factory. We have yet to look for a build sheet in the car, but the original window sticker confirms the car to be an original stripe car. After looking at the stripes this morning, they appear to be all original on the entire car and have not been touched up(you can still see were the factory over spray is from when they painted the stripes at the factory with the rear window out, underneath the package tray). This Chevelle was built at the Arlington assembly plant. After doing some research, I found out that many of the assembly plants did paint the stripes on squaring the edges like this car. Also, Arlington cars are know for the build sheets being under the tar paper beneath the carpet. They are rare to be found in Arlington built cars, and are usually unreadable because of the tar paper. I am still unsure if I want to take pieces of the car apart to look for the build sheet, because the interior of the car is really untouched(I honestly don't think the bottom of the back seat has been out since it was new). If the car didn't have the original window sticker and dealer check in sheet, etc. I would be determined to find the build sheet if it had one in it. But, being that the car has other paperwork supporting its options and authenticity, I think it may be best to leave the interior alone.

What I just noticed looking at the photos again is the hood has hood pins.
Only Cowl Induction hoods came with Hood Pins with the Cables etc...
So that is a bit strange to see as all the standard domed SS hoods I have seen has never had the hood pins from the factory. Maybe the dealer added the hood pins or a previous owner did?

In 1970 hood pins came standard on the working flapper door hood.
Beginning in 1971 &amp; 72,hood pins were automatically included with the STD.SS package bulge hood,(non flapper door hood).

Hey everyone. After much debate on weather to look for a build sheet in our Chevelle, we decided to carefully look in a couple places were they are known to be found. According to some research we did, many people did not find any build sheets in Arlington built Chevelles. If they were found, usually they weren't readable because of being placed under the tar paper that is underneath the carpeting. We began by carefully looking underneath the carpet/tar paper on the driver side by the gas pedal, and were disappointed to find nothing. Then, we began to look on the passenger side underneath the carpet/tar paper in front of the front seat. As we began to pull the tar paper back, low and behold, we saw a corner of the build sheet resting on the floor! We spent well over an hour carefully removing the build sheet from were it was placed back in 1971. Surprisingly, it is in pretty good condition, and it is even readable in the right lighting!

Thanks! I too have seen them advertised, makes you wonder how many less than honest car's are out there? It seems there's been an awfully lot of nice, legible 40+ year old build sheets in the last few years. Just makes it that much more difficult to find the REAL cars. Another reason for trying to locate this one. The part that's missing is still in the car under the tarpaper.
