Just picked up this 68 Shelby GT 500....I think my Camaros in the garage are upset !! Maybe jealous?? haha I had asked about value a few weeks ago as this car popped up in a private sale situation from longtime owner/storage and it was one of them..."it's here and now things" !! I do not even have room for the car in the garage and I'm a chevy and mostly Camaro guy all my life, but over the years I have learned to love other makes and models too...So who would not want a real Shelby, right? Atleast I'm gonna enjoy it for a while and then maybe think of selling in a while... maybe not !! haha

I already like this car as I realize all the race-oriented stuff they came with originally...factory tach and aftermarket guages..all the glass parts of course..factory roll bar w/safety harness type seat belts, front discs..rear traction bars..even Koni shocks !! I have a lot to learn, but I will have fun in the process !!

Car is fair condition, 428 auto, candy apple red, black deluxe interior. So it http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/11/full-4333-18315-img_0376.jpg
will need a really good detailing atleast !! I can't wait to get started !!

hope to get it on the lift soon and get some better pics..and thanks Bruce (Bergy) for the info and advice !!

Congrats!!!! TONS of originality on that car - looks like it will clean up nicely. All original fiberglass parts - Even has the correct fog light lenses!

Don't worry, all the Fords and Chevys can live happily in the garage. I have a good mix of the two and I don't think you can have a better combination of cars.

Thanks guys !!

According to the prior owner, this car has never been registered on any sites or club registries...So which is the 'official' Shelby registry that everyone talks about?

Thanks Charley !! car now registered ! Is possible for someone to check the registry to see if a car is registered? I did not see that part listed?

Rich, My buddy bought a 65 fastback when he was 15 yrs old and still has it (he's 55 now!) Because of him, I learned to like the fastback style... I especially like this car with the fold dowm rear seat.. I guess all fastbacks had that? When people see my car they are generally surprised how long and sleek it is compared to the "normal boxy" mustangs !! haha I think the longer front end and hood, ducts and especially rear trunk lid add to that long aerodynamis look. Can't wait to take it for a long drive !!

I love the interior...the tilt-away steering wheel I never even knew existed !! it has Shelby or Cobra badges everywhere...the horn button, the glove bex..the door sills and even the seat belts !! Car has factory tach and guages everywhere. The console has original stewart warner guages and apparently the shifter plate is normally for a non-console car . I love the wood shifter handle also. And the rollbar w the safety harnesses..Wow !! They did alot more to these cars than any factory camaro back then, that's for sure !!

I know you guys are more Chevy types, but this is a learning experience for me so i thought i would share. I think maybe the rear end looks cooler than the front !! Sorry for the bad iphone pics.

I'll take some better pics when I started digging into car.

Max, was it local? I remember seeing a 68 Shelby GT500 (I thought it was a KR) for sale years ago in your area. That looks like it's going to be a fun car!

The registry is about a 5 pound book with all known info about each car. Post the vin and I can look in the book. The book costs a couple hundred bucks and now there are 3 of them because there is more info all the time.

The Shelby Vin ..and the hidden VIN underneath... I was advised to check the hidden VIN before purchase..so I drillled one rivet and there it was !!
Always learning!! Do these cars have other hidden VINS anywhere??

I just sent in my data, but I'd like to know if it was already listed. If not, I assume my car will show up in next year's book ? I'll have to get a copy then!
Thanks in advance Charley !!
Max
Tough to read I guess... its 8T02S143534-01676

And yes Jeff..the car was about ten minutes from me...but car was never publicly for sale for years. The prior owner saw the car driving in New Hope, Pa. in 1985 and asked the then owner if he would sell and they made a deal a week later. Car was actually registered in the name of a Candy Company back then !! I guess a tax write off?? Candy apple red?? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif

and Thanks Jason !!

Ah, the registry from 97?? Does it say the year they owned the car? Or is that 97?

Charley Lillard

Yes that is from the 97 registry. Does not say when they owned it. You could order the latest registry.

So just got off the phone with Fred Bastian !! Unbelievable !! He's 75 yrs old. Bought car from original owner 10 mins from here for 2500 bucks in the late 70's (not sure the year) !! He said it was a great investment as he sold it for 3500 !! He realky got emotional talking about this car and his other mustangs he had back in the day including a 67 Shelby and how he sold his 2 Boss 429s for 20k each! He could not believe someone from Texas found out he had the cars and offered him the cash !! Hopefully I can get the car roadworthy and bring it by to show him. He is not in good health apparently.

Thanks Charley and SYC

It is Pletcher.... apparently dealer was sold around 69-70. They apparently sold lots of Shelbys and even had the last 6 of the original Cobras.

Marti report says Pletcher Ford Sales, Inc., The Fairway, Jenkintown, Pa.

I remember seeing a white Boss 429 at the Doylestown car show probably 25 years ago (around the time I bought the power top setup from you). It was unrestored and I thought the guy said he had 2 Boss 429's so that was probably him. I thought I saw a 68 Shelby for sale locally about 15-20 years ago.

Kool find, all Shelbys are special cars. The GT500s have some interesting history as not all received a 428ci Police Intercepter engine as they were supposed to.
