To answer a general question: of the 89 Deuces found thus far, 13 are reported to have the Sport Mirror option. That's approximately 15%, higher than I would have thought. If you extrapolate that out to the full population of 175 Deuces produced.... approximately 26 Deuces were ordered with Sport Mirrors. In theory the number could/should be higher since owners were known to remove / replace them because they interfered with the wing windows.

Adam, Kenny and I surmised that the rivet gun on the assembly line got jammed when installing trim pieces around the window and the assembly guy un-jammed his gun by firing a few into fender well, only to be discovered by us 44 years later .... very cool <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2015/02/full-18271-21623-red_nova_rat.jpg

Hey Marlin,
I know it may appear to be a repair but I can assure you it is not, yes the car was repainted at some point in its life, however the fenders were not removed and this is original paint. In person its very easy for us to see that this is original paint and that their is no damage in this area at all. We at first thought the same as you as its was fairly common that rivets or welded on nipples were used to pull out dents, however this is not the case as there is no damage in the area, no bondo, no distortion from pulling and no evidence of pulling or abrasion on the rivets. I will send you some detailed pictures at high res so you can blow them up. Its really not a big deal, but I think its very cool that we can document that some weird stuff did occur on the line at times, either way, the car is awesome and looking forward to sharing as we go <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif. Don, it's in his signature - cran red deuce.
The seat material in the heater box is quite common, you might also find it in the glove box and in the headliner. The broadcast sheet could be in that ball of seat material as well, so comb through it.
Black snakes in that part of PA are also quite common, mostly seen in the winter as they find a little warmth from the cold. Wayne has put pics of black snakes next to his Nova's in the Nova Times magazine in years past - interesting!!
Mr Yenko
02-25-2015, 11:44 PM

On any areas of rust, we will be using the original panels and metal finishing in small sections as needed. Its always at least twice the work but well worth it to keep the sheet metal original.

I trust you are taking plenty of photographs of codes and markings? That is such an important part of the tear down process, and we've learned a lot from the Deuces that have documented restorations. Specifically, inspect the firewall for grease pencil markings, front suspension components for paint daubs, subframe for date stencils and inspection stripes, driveshaft for application paint rings, rear diff for inspection scribbles and paint daubs, and the sides of the engine block / ends of the cylinder heads for crayon writing. A little time spent documenting will pay off huge in the finished product! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

So far we have taken more than 200 pictures <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif we are sharing all with Ken S and I will send you a Zip drive with all the photo's for your files <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif as far as rust, very little in window area, etc, what you are seeing is mostly surface and dirt. Check the sides of the engine block, many times the engin code (CTC in your case) will be written on both sides, in yellow crayon, upside down. Also, you might find white "X"'s on the ends of the heads, under the Orange paint.

If you soda blast the firewall, you stand a better chance of preserving the crayon markings. Anything to aggressive takes them out. Bill Edel's deuce had lots of marks.

I thought it would be interesting to see how well the factory Balanced the rotating assembly back in 1970.
So I took all the original parts, made my Bob Weight and spun up the crank. As you can see it was only off by 6 Grams in the front and 8 Grams in the back. I bet they gave the LT1 special attention. In the late 80s I blueprinted many brand new LB9s 350s and L69s 305 for GM special projects and many were off 8 to 14 grams.
Thought you guys might like this info.

Very nice Ken, <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif My original crank was off about the same, will you metal-ax the block? I really like the pic of the pad stamping, I don't think we've seen another Deuce stamped like that! It is also very early with it being an 0512 (especially for a car being this late in the build order), most engine assy dates are 0520 with the range being pretty tight at 0518 - 0521.
Interesting stencil on the leaf spring, I'd have to see the underside of the spring to determine if they are original to the car or not. Also, I see the rear sway bar setup, it's nice that you have that item!! Pay special attention to cleaning the rear assy, many times there are crayon markings on the center section.

Marlin..Good call on the Metal-ax machine. I'm surprised you know about that machine, most people don't. Back in the late 90s I was helping Paul Pfaff Racing Engines with some Pro Stock development and he just purchased one. I would vibrate Titanium valves and they would cut like butter! I always use that procedure on (Green, New) blocks ,heads ect. But the old stuff with all the heat cycles don't seem to move much.
TAZ, I have not check any OEM Olds Assembly's.

That should be a yellow decal with a two letter code. On manual boxes it is a yellow two letter stamp. At least based on my experience.

Thanks Ken ...
Hey Doug,
thank you for the comments, we are washing all parts with soap and water to carefully check for any and all markings, we will document everything. We did this with the Block, but saw nothing, however while Kenny was machining the block, the oils etc have brought out what appears to be some kind of marking in yellow on the side of the block ... a 5 or 6 or maybe even a yellow X ?
Marlin the springs are absolutely original, we will get pictures of both sides when we take them apart and share with you.
Hope you all have a nice day.

The power steering has a yellow decal, not paint.
The yellow on the sides of the block will likely be the engine application code of 'CTC', typically written on both sides, in yellow crayon, upside down.
I agree with you Ken, putting a block through the metal ax procedure after so many heat cycles normally doesn't 'relax' it very much but mine had a little bit of stress in it per the graph printout I received. In theory, I probably should have metal ax'd it after the machining was done....

Are you sure those springs are original?? Look like replacements to me just by the leaf clamps. Those don't look like OEM style leaf spring clamps. I still have my original springs on my survivor 70 Nova and they don't look anything like those. Maybe the clamps only were replaced??

Yes we are 100% sure, the car has been thoroughly inspected by Ken S of Deuce Heaven, Stefano B of Nickey's, Doug, and Ken M. unless they were replaced by the dealer on the lot, we are very certain they are original, we will double triple quadruple check when we take the rear end apart and wash and clean everything <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif stay tuned.

I have seen that same treatment with the rivets on a few 68-72 novas and a few 69 Camaros.. almost like they were doing a practice run before they did what they needed to

Heaven forbid -- that makes sense. Those rivet guns where probably a pain at times -- better to get it set before trying to set rivets around the windshield opening. TAZ

Great story! That engine assembly stamp is quite interesting! Normally when you see really odd assembly stamps it's a result of an engine that failed at some point on the line and was sent back to "heavy repair". This would usually result in a grind out of the original stamp and then restamped, which is obviously not the case here. Out of curiosity, how do the head/block cast dates line up?
Keep the pictures coming!
Steve
I will post several pictures of all dates and marking of the motor Monday or Tuesday <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Nice pictures! In addition to the casting clock that is pictured on the engine block you should also have a alpha numeric code like on the heads, water pump, etc. Did you get a shot of that one?
Thanks

Great pics, the dates of the components are exactly in line with other Deuces - especially the heads.
Kenny does not mess around, the motor us ready for final assembly, He will test run it and break in the cam some time next week. All number matching original motor <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2015/03/full-18271-23287-red_deuce_motor.jpg
