View Full Version : How Many Rare Cars Went This Route?

3 Camaros a racin from a local track near my house..a local guy(Nick Masierelli-owned 2 of the Hemi Barracuda convertibles and raced both) bought a '70 Hemi Barracuda that was in a garage fire when near new and he turned it into a stock car..ran the Hemi for a while, all the local racers complained but the car was really a slug and he went faster when he put in a 340.

I will find a pick of a 1965 K-code fastback a local guy ran at the stock car track just because he had it and it was available..rust free

What's sad is most of these cars were probably fairly rust free.

Nick Masciarelli original Hemi Cuda with Deak Parsons driving.

T.A Sikora from Maynard Ohio bought the car new and it was in a garage fire and Nick bought it s ainsurance wreck when he owned Auto Body Sales.

Nick Masciarelli owned more rare Hemi and 6 pack cars than anyone.

Wonder what happened to the car? Andy Hogan from PA was the last owner.

A local guy, Hazelwood, Pa's , Bob Jones bought a 71 B5 Blue Hemi car out of W.Va. with 400 miles, setup for SS/D about 74-75
(with a spun bearing)
Had Stones on it, Rat Roaster, It was a "SS Stone" couldn't get out of the Mid 12's or Stay together...... whereabouts unknown... Was a gorgeous car ....for a Mopar.....

It is amazing to me how many cars did survive. My brothers and their friends bought, raced and thrashed these cars back in the day. Most got wrecked, some multiple times, then came the rust. Or, the cars got stolen. Most returned minus a bunch of parts.

I recall going to many drag races where most of the cars were 1st gen camaros. They were beat on mercilessly.

Really makes you appreciate the cars that did survive.

This was when most of these cars we're crying about were wrecks, rusted, wore out and dime a dozen.....

we cut up and lightened a '68 Z/28 RS Cowl Plenum 4:56 rear, fold down seat, deluxe interior tach - gauge etc.etc. Red n black car because it was rusty, cheap, worth way more in parts & '68's made the Best Race Cars.....Ran 10.70's w/ 350 -DougNash, 1 PC lift off glass....in '80-"81.....
Most 64 & 64 Chevelles ended up on the Dirt from New England to the Deep South from Mid West to the West Coast.....Ever try to find a "Clean Malibu SS" ?
There's more early Camaros alive than Chevelles .... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/3gears.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/burnout.gif

He's digging up some pics of my Dad's many race cars and cars he either tuned or drove. from 1956 - 1972.

We had an aluminum front end 1964 Plymouth drag car that ended up on the local dirt track in the late 70s. The hemi was removed and replaced with a 440 by the new owner and converted to a dirt car. I about fell over when I heard what happened to the car by the new owner.

I was told the aluminum panels were on the car when it was raced on the dirt track. This happened over 30 years ago in a town about 175 miles from here and I was only made aware of what happened to the car in the last 15 years or so. Locals have said that it was raced for a period of time and scrapped.

I have many childhood memories of that car going off against a 63 Plymouth max wedge at the local drag strip. It was uncut and at some point it had a cage installed.

Cool thread...FWIW, All of the circle track late model sportsman cars that my father and I built (more so my father) in the late 60's through the 70's, used new GM Chevelle/Camaro sheet metal. These cars were built using '55-'57 Chevy frames with various spring set-ups.

The car above looks to be more of a LMS car than a Street Stock.

That being said, most of the SS cars were taken right off of the street and raced.

A friend of my fathers bought a new 1970 LS6 Chevelle, M-22, 4:10, Cowl Hood car, Tuxedo black white stripe and parchment interior sold new at Reedmen Chevrolet Langhorne, PA while he was in the service. He owned the car for several years sold the car to his brother in law who sold the car to a guy who turned the car into a dirt track car. All those stripped-out track cars and modified street machines in the old days are why we have $5000 air cleaners and $400 valve stem caps today. Think about it. Today's "unobtanium" was often just parts we removed on Day 2 and threw into dumpsters.

Looks more like a 4 Dr Sedan, 300 emblem ......wow, even then 4 door stock cars were made to look like racing coupes. ..... NASCAR history ?

as a kid, pre-teen I had to walk over and ON Dad's discarded Corvette Fuel injection units, air cleaners , even the aluminum louvered air cleaners.....to walk through the basement not to mention the garage.....geez..

Once we took one of Dad's hoods,, a '58 Corvette louvered hood, split the skin off the frame and Made Us A 'Sled' for the driveway winters and hillside !!! The louvers, I think slowed us down as the '55 Chevy Hoods 'were faster' yet hurt like hell when they ran us over......Duh..

Bill supplied the aluminum inner fenders. '62s didn't have aluminum bumpers. Joe Gardner's car had a steel front otherwise. Had to be for A/S.

Chevy built aluminum fitted lightweight cars & over the counter race parts but NHRA only classified Steel cars ?
kind of switch n switch game some of the racers played from track to track National event to National event ?

The Tedesco brothers here in the Pgh area had a Z11 or Aluminum '62 Car from a famous racer. don't know from whom.???
The car is supposedly still around sans front end. .and a front end is around Western Pa / Eastern Ohio.

Customer of mine was given a 70 Hemi Challenger R/T to run as a dirt track stock car right off the lot in 70. Doesn't remember what happened to it after he was done though.
When Enduro racing was popular here in the late 80's / early 90's I know that a lot of good stuff was lost then. Most memorable to me was a 69 M-code 440 Barracuda fastback.
The one that got "away" so to say to dirt track racin' was reported to be a 69 427 Nova. I had first heard about the car in 82 from a friend in HS. He knew how the 427 met its' death. It then went on to have multiple small blocks in it before landing into another friends hands who turned it into a dirt track car and eventually retired it to his dads farm. When his dad sold the place the car ended up being crushed. If, IF! I can ever find the slip of paper I have the cars' serial number but I've had 2 moves and 25 years since I last saw that paper.

Tom,

What I'm saying is that the aluminum cars were not allowed to run in any Stock class. (He slipped by with the inners). In '62 the only aluminum was the fenders, inner fenders and hood. Those cars all ran B/FX. The '63 Z-lls had 13 different pieces of aluminum (but no longer any inner fenders) and they ran A/FX after the Winternationals. IF Chevy had provided a list of 50 VINs to NHRA, they could have run Super Stock. When they first showed up at the Winternationals, they had no class because Chevy provided them with a list of only roughly 40 cars and they invented a class for them - LP (Limited Production), which meant they all ran against each other. Pissed a lot of people off.

Yes, I agree. Joe was very careful about the car's appearance. In fact, those chrome wheels were bought JUST before the photo shoot for that purpose. The gold on top of the fenders was actually metalflake but hard to tell from any photos. My very good (deceased) friend Ronnie Evans was going to build a tribute but all his time went into his own race car. Joe and his wife are still doing well in AZ.

In retrospect, any and all cars were made to be used, USED & Abused in ways any body could or would for our status, egos, bravado and to an end of the means, Alot of people who did this, racers or not really have no interest in going back in time in a nostalgic way we do .. to appreciate ,honor, duplicate and build our own in traditions of days past.......

Nick Masciarelli was my uncle. Here is the back story on the blue HEMI convertible.

The Cuda was manufactured in February 1971. The first owner "Ronald Ambach" lived in St. Louis / Missouri at the time. He was the proud owner until the demise of this muscleman in the first oil crisis. He had only covered a few road miles in the vehicle. The next owner was a man named "Nick Masciarelli" from Ohio. He bought the Cuda for his drag racing escapades. He modified a number of things on the HEMI engine to significantly increase the performance, as an engine expert he called in "Tom Tignanelli". Desperate to get a good result in the drag races with the vehicle, under pressure to win the races, Tignanelli persuaded him to swap out the HEMI for a new HEMI Race engine.

The Hemi Cuda was sold again in May 1973. The new owner, named "John Book" and his West Virginia partner "John Oliverio" continued to rush the HEMI Cuda around the drag strip during '73-'74.

Fortunately, from that date, the Hemi Cuda was stored in an air-conditioned room in West Virginia for historical preservation until 1989. In 1989 the vehicle was owned by the Painter brothers bought and just two years later "Milt Robson" from Atlanta Georgia bought the Cuda. This was still in the race look, nobody had ever restored the HEMI to its original origins. Milt Robson has now faithfully restored the HEMI Cuda to the broadcast sheet, everything has been professionally restored down to the smallest detail. He made no compromises and only used original used or NOS parts. The restoration was completed in the early 1990s. The HEMI Cuda Cabriolet still has all the original sheet metal parts, nothing had to be re-welded. The original interior has also been refurbished. Unfortunately, the engine could no longer be found. The search was unsuccessful and Milt Robson has sourced a correct 1/19/1970 Data-Coded Chrysler NOS block as a replacement .

In addition to a 4-speed, the HEMI Cuda was also ordered and delivered with a power steering, power brakes and a Super Track Pack (Dana 60 rear axle). Another great option ordered was the AM/FM radio and of course the body-colored elastomeric front bumpers (code A21). It is said to be the only '71 HEMI Cuda Cabriolet that has this option ex works, according to the broadcast sheet. Both broadcast sheets are available for the vehicle. The previous owner history is fully documented and is underlined by the titles (registration papers) that are still present. The vehicle was personally inspected by Galen Govier and is declared an absolutely original "pearl". It is of course also recorded in the official Chrysler Registry in the USA.

The HEMI Cabriolet appears in the color EB5 Blue outside as well as inside. Only the roof is in white. The HEMI is perfect down to the smallest detail, a real trailer queen and restored for eternity for the showrooms.

The HEMI Cuda Cabriolet has lot number 255 and can already be viewed on January 18th at the auction hall in Arizona. Further information can be found on the RM Auctions website. More comprehensive information about the total of 11 manufactured '71 HEMI Cuda Convertibles can be found in our reports.

The car rolled in a crash. What was left was stripped of all useful parts and the body/frame were scrapped somewhere in FLA.

We know where the hubcaps ended up..

Ha! I was wondering if anyone else saw that too.

My boss and I had 69 GTO's , and I wanted a hidden headlight setup for mine. He knew somebody that had one I could have if I pulled it off the car. I had to do it in the next couple days because he entered it in the local fair's demo derby. It was a pretty nice car, I had to put the mint front endura bumper back on, what a shame.

Hard to believe, this is ZL-1 Camaro #33 124379N610732. Road raced 'down under' by the late Bob Jane. He bought it and ZL-1 #52 new from Jim Rathmann Chevrolet in FL. #52 was drag raced a bit, said to have been destroyed years ago in a highway crash.

#33 is now restored to original racing livery and last I knew, had the engine from #52.

Did any of the cars that were cut up for dirt track racing ever get restored?
