This is a continuation on the discussion and correct installation of the now "Infamous" upside down and inside out cowl seal started over at "marys" thread Super car photographs. I did not want to further hijack a great thread.
Some of the following will be redundant from what "KevinW" has already mentioned here.

1st off all the GM seals I have had must be turned and forced to the correct position. And #2 if they are not glued down it will be difficult to get them to lay out well.
Black trim cement works well, but do not used it over crappy rattle can paint.

Now as to training the seal, I pull the top edge of the seal and fold it over the outside edge of the ring. Clamps or extra hands might help. I have also used the black plastic wire harness wrap to hold it in place. Then leave it till you install it on the car.
The last one I did I sandwiched it between two pieces of plywood and screwed it together to add some pressure.
And It helps to keep it in the sun as mentioned.

Mike, I was reading your post. I recently got a cowl induction air cleaner from a 71 402 chevelle. Im not sure if its real. From everything im seeing I think it is but im not sure. Also the seal im not exactly sure about it. If I could send you pics could you help me out with it? You seem to be the subject matter expert. Thanks Also sent a pm.

Looks like the current reproduction air cleaner and rubber seal,based on your photos.
The rubber seal is also inside out &amp; upside down.

Mr 70 I took it off and just set it there. So you think its inside out.

Yes it's upside down and inside out in those pics.
They ship them turned inside out,but they're meant to be turned around before being installed.
Look here to compare yours to an assembly line original.Specifically the air horn notch &amp; vent tube design,among other things.

Does your rubber seal have black tape on the inside &amp; the outside?

Great info.! Thanks! Mike, when your post mentioned &quot;training the seal&quot;, I wondered if we were to see a video from SeaWorld?!? Just jabbin' atcha!!! Really good info and it is surprising to see some nicely restored cars with the seal installed incorrectly.

This is a very timely topic as I just installed a repo unit on my camino this weekend. What is the orientation for the flange on the air cleaner? I assumed the flat section of the flange was there to clear the distributor, but I notice in the picture attached to this thread that the &quot;Rear&quot; sticker was aligned with the flared section of the flange which would place the &quot;flat&quot; over near cylinders 4 and 6. How in the heck is the flange supposed to be oriented?

The flat section on the flange ring is to clear the A/C unit on Chevelles. The flared section of the ring will go in the rear and corresponds with the indented area of the air cleaner which is for distributor clearance. Also that is where the &quot;rear&quot; decal is. The flat section would be in about the 10 thru 11 position on the clock. Hard to see in this photo but you can see where the rubber seal is out of round in that area due to the flat spot in the ring. Most people say the tape seam should be in above the &quot;rear&quot; decal but I have found them all over the place and I will normally put them exactly how I found them if it is the original seal and ring.

Ahhhh the AC box. that makes perfect sense. My car does not have AC so I didn't think about that. I thought the flared section should go to the back, but the flat confused me. All clear now. Thanks!

Digging up an old thread here. On the 69 Z that I am working on, I pulled the flange off to install a new seal. The flange has a GM sticker on it, but it isn't exactly like the original on my car. Mine is not perfectly round, a a small part on the passenger side is slightly egg shaped. BUT mine still has the little 90 degree lip all the way around. This one just has that part cut off, so there is no lip to hold the seal.

Hope that makes sense. can post pics tomorrow.

So, two questions.
1. Are all the over the counter NOS flanges like that?
2. How to you get the new seal to mount correctly? Glue?

I THINK I just found the answer. The 70 Chevelle flange has a that part cut out.

Anyone have a GM Camaro flange that you want to trade for a 70 Chevelle GM (with the sticker) NOS flange?

Lynn, glad my old thread was helpful!

The cowl seal should not need any glue, the tension alone should keep it in place. Have you seen my cowl seal instruction thread?
