Why is it every time a Camaro is coming up on the block they go to a commercial.. Or is it just me?

Ha! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif I thought you meant it literally, that the place was burning down and only $200-$300k cars were on fire.... It's been a long day....

Yes, the silver deuce is a rebody. I wonder who bought it?
$190,000.00 for a Model A circus pickup wagon Tuesday evening.
They also announced that so far the total for memorabilia sold is $4.9 million.
I don't know what's more absurd,10K for the fantasy Shell sign or 250K for that fake Beverly Hillbillies car.You could have bought a real classic Packard or Cadillac for that.

Honestly and in my opinion, when I was talking to the wife last night about B-J I told her I thought this was going to be a banner year there for high prices. Maybe not prior to the bust, but the economy is getting stronger (in spite of govt actions and really just on the backs of regular Americans being sick of the economic doldrums, IMO) and people are a little more optimistic. I just had a feeling the bucks would be flowing there this year.

Guess the Pratt cars had a lot to do with Tuesday's higher prices, according to the Velocity commentators.
Tonight a nice stock/orange '71 454 Corvette gets just past 30K and then a "rat rod" '71 Chevy short bed, with actual rust holes, gets 30K. I'm sure I am missing something here!
Nice to have Steve Magnante commenting on the cars.

Any thoughts on the Pratt '69 "Motion" LS-7 Camaro? Daytona Yellow, looks cool.
Not going to watch any this year. Tired of the BS and hype. Yes Pratt has a nice collection, he has the money. There are other cars there other than his. And most of all its the Ford show because they sponsor it. How many times have you waited for a car to come up and they go to commercial. Or if a Ford is going at a low price Steve Davis steps in and opens his mouth. Tired of this nonsense. There are a few cars truly worth a million dollars and NONE of them are our beloved muscle cars. Sorry

They jumped the shark a long time ago. Now I consider it an insult when someone calls a car, a "Barrett Jackson quality" car.
Yes, those inane comments drive me nuts. Like when they ramble on about how is it possible that a cross ram, JL8 Z/28 could possible go for only $50,000...as I am screaming at the TV: THAT"S BECAUSE IT'S A CLONE WITH NO REAL PAPERWORK AND A QUICKLY PAINT JOB THAT IS STILL WET....
I DVR the coverage and then fast forward through the crapola. I watched the 3 hour episodes an about 30 minutes. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

I too just DVR the thing and fast forward. I stop and watch the cars I'm interested in, and cringe at the comments the commentators make.
Did anyone notice how Mike Joy seems to touch something on every single car? Steve Magnante is a true car guy, he points to items or features, but does not make physical contact. Mike Joy is one of those guys that rubs, picks, or strokes every part of the car he's talking about. Obviously, Mike Joy doesn't understand car guy etiquette. He's probably one those guys that walks into an art museum and touches a painting as he describes what he likes and doesn't like about it.
There was an old pre-war oil/grease delivery truck that had an over-the-top museum quality resto, and when the camera hit Mike Joy, he mentioned where the supplies were kept on the truck. He grabbed the huge slider latch on the back door of the truck and tried to open it (?#!@#), but it wouldn't budge. He said it must have been painted shut. Seriously? The paint job on the latch and slider assembly was show quality, perfectly aligned, and I'm sure had never been opened.
I stopped my DVR to watch a 1969 Trans Am on the block. I shook my head as the commentators once again got everything wrong. They said this one had the "rare optional Ram Air III engine" (that was the standard engine), that all 69 Trans Am's were white with Lucerne Blue stripes (they're not Lucerne Blue), and they pointed to the repop window sticker and said the Trans Am option added $400 to the price of a 69 Firebird. The Trans Am option added over $1000 to the price of a Firebird, they were looking at what the Trans Am option consisted of. On top of that, the Trans Am they were talking about was supposed to be a low mileage original, but had obviously been restored. They missed painting the wing pedestals blue, it had a completely incorrect gray master cylinder, was missing the power steering cooling line, and the seats were obviously a new material as they didn't match the door panels.
Oh well, I still enjoy watching, but just with the DVR... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Many have not met reserve or have sold for less than what he paid for them.
Pratt bought the Super Snake for 5.5 mil and bidding only went up to 4.7-did not meet reserve.
He paid 4 million for the Futureliner and then had it restored ( I would say another 1 mil easily) and it only sold for 4 mil

I doubt he cares..his high dollar accountants had it set up so if he sold at a loss he takes a tax break. Pratt did not become billionaire by being stoopid.
I would even venture to say he has it set up where he even makes money..he writes off the full price of the Futureliner, I bet it's storage, ad all associated cost that he had including employees he hired to take care of it.

I know there were paperwork issues with a red W30 vert they did in 2013 - doctored docs if you will (not Thornton's fault) - same thing? Or maybe it just sold on the floor before the stage? Is that possible at BJ? Anyways there was much commentary in 2013 in a BJ thread here on the docs for the 357k(!!) W30 red vert but, lo and behold, all negative commentary has since been stripped from the thread...sometimes this site is funny like that - certain cars are "protected". <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

Keep in mind that a lot of Mr. Pratte's cars were charity cars where 100% of the money went to charity and were a 100% tax write off. So let's just use the Hughes Buick as an example(even though I don't think this vehicle was a charity vehicle) buys it for 1.5 mil, takes a tax write off for 1.5 mil, then sells a couple years later for 100K...he made money. The few he loses money on will be made up by the many charity cars he bought and took the 100% write off on and re sells.

Bumbling Mike Joy touching everything, Steve M. as the smart guy with the chunky black glasses, Amy A. the looker with the long flowing hair whispering into the ears of older men to up the bid, Spanky A. with those reading glasses always on his brow, The young bidders assistant that is rarely seen but often heard with his howling scream, Sexy ring girls in long formal gowns holding signs, Gary, the old hippie refusing to give up the long hair, Ron Pratte as the quiet elephant in the room, Richard Rawlins the flamboyant seller, The Big Spender that looks like he just walked off the set of The Sopranos, Various drunken spectators with no intention of bidding but trying to be seen on TV in the background of every interview, and numerous celebrities making a guest appearance on stage.
Who did I miss?
However, they must be doing something right. Attendance is up, prices are up, and I am still watching more than ever!
Prices are up, but why? I haven't seen a break in my economy yet. Where is the money coming from?

Let me see if I understand this charity thing.........
Person A donates a car worth $100K at auction for charity. Tax write off for what it sells for.
Person B buys the car for $100K. Money goes to charity. Tax write off.
Person B puts the same car up for auction at the same event or next year. Proceeds to go to charity. Tax write off.
Person C:....well you get the picture.
Now, if I decide to sell my car for charity and I have my buddy make sure he's the high bidder, I get the tax write off for the sale price and he gets the tax write off for his payment to the charity. HE puts the car up again at auction for charity and I buy it back. We both get the tax deduction again. I get my car back and we both get a 2X $$ tax deduction for playing the game. Is that really how it works?
I guess if my buddy was sitting next to me on the front row and he bought my "car", I'd get up and give him a hug too!

Marlin could probably comment here, but it's my understanding that the amount of the tax write off for the purchaser of the car is only the amount paid in excess of the value of merchandise received.

What you are missing is that when you buy a car where the proceeds are going to charity, you cannot write off the donation in full because you are receiving an asset for the price you paid",its not a true "donation" due to that. If you overpay for a car thats being auctioned off ,you may be able to write off the amount you paid over the market value of the car.

"But who establishes the value of the goods received?"
When you're dealing with the IRS - It's best to have a certified appraiser provide the value in writing. The IRS can still argue, but you will generally avoid penalties if you take the donation credit based on a certified, appraised value.

I wondered what would happen with that old green Z/28 Pratt bought from a few years ago at a BJ auction. (The big VIN tag swap debacle)?
VIN 124379N509335 that turned out to be a vin swapped car after someone found the ad selling the vin and firewall tags and the VIN seller openly discussed it on Team Camaro?

I know there were paperwork issues with a red W30 vert they did in 2013 - doctored docs if you will (not Thornton's fault) - same thing? Or maybe it just sold on the floor before the stage? Is that possible at BJ? Anyways there was much commentary in 2013 in a BJ thread here on the docs for the 357k(!!) http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/513814/2
On page 2, I commented about how 357K was nuts for the red W30 convertible that went through BJ in 2013 (my comment is still there). I distinctly remember and will swear on my son's life that a couple of well-known "muscle car retailers" on this site came back very quickly in that thread to say that no, this was an accurate price for such a car, with a tone insinuating I didn't know what I was talking about (often true, but not in this instance). Then it blew up because someone else pointed out that the car had been found to have "questionable docs" as in aged and/or manipulated and/or outright falsified. Several people commented on it...but not me (I don't do tol-ya-so's) or the two respected sellers of muscle cars. All of this IS GONE from this thread. And I tell ya, IT WAS THERE in 2013. My comment about "protected" wasn't aimed at the administration of the site - that would be conspiracy theory and I don't do those either - it was aimed at those who want certain cars to maintain values and will protect the value of those cars if they happen to be in their inventory. At least that is what it felt like to me in 2013 on this particular thread.

Might be interesting to see as baby-boomers die off (no offense, I am one of them) and cars start coming back to auction, who will be there with the money to buy them and for what price? Boomers fueled not just the U.S. economy for their whole lives but lifted the global economy too. The following demographics are not as large and do not have as much money spread across the demographic. Will the top 10% of post-boomer generations still pay boomer money for cars--cars they themselves did not grow up with and therefore do not have youthful nostalgia for? (I've bought stuff from the old days, including cars, because these things made me feel younger--relive the good old days.) You can be sure the speculators are very busy speculating. (As I just did.)

60's musclecars will never go begging for an owner, but as time goes on they will increasingly share the spotlight with later model stuff, the same way Deusenbergs and Pierce-Arrows currently share it with 70 Cuda's and 69 Chevelle's. Can't stay young forever.

Don't forget, it is an international market today. I am reminded of this when I received a call from a young man from Mongolia wanting a 65 Mustang. Google the weather and the road situation there. More cart trails then roads. I sometimes forget the allure these cars have to people around the globe now. China is coming on board also. Without the foreign market the last 5 or 6 years would have been a lot tougher for the vendors, shippers, dealers etc...
I hate seeing some of the cars go, but when the car is for sale and they have the money, whatta ya gonna do.

Des,
Conspiracy theories aside and in regards to the Red Barrett Jackson W-30. Your statements and opinions are just not completely accurate. The collector who was seeking a best of the best, 4 speed convertible knew what he was after. He obviously wanted the car more than the money. The fact that the paperwork Thornton had come up with, was fraudulent......well that is another matter and I would surmise, one of the reasons that the deal was backed up. The car was resold with no documentation at the next BJ auction for $250k. This to me is more surprising than the initial sale when the paperwork was believed to be authentic. The high bidder in-turn went out and purchased a bullet proof convertible and had it restored/cleaned up to his standards. While I was not involved with the sale/purchase, communicating with the buyer and seller leads me to be very confident that he has more invested than you may approve.
As someone who follows W-30s to a degree and who has had direct involvement with them, I can let you know that there was a recent offer tendered to purchase one of the known and documented W-30 4 speeds for much more than the BJ car, but the owner decided not to sell it and another great W-30 4 speed rag top recently traded hands in the value range of the BJ W-30.
With only 96 ever produced and approx 25 considered to be real and even fewer with original drivetrains, its not difficult to understand why a collector may decide to pay such a price. I don't make the market, but am familiar with it.
