Here is a little project my Dad and I started. For years, I would have hear people at car shows talk about my Dad's 1967 Nova. It has had a colorful past, and though he has owned it since 1971- there were stories we have yet to figure out. People had told us that the car had a 302 in it early on- some swearing it came that way from the factory. The full story on this car will be saved for another thread, but we did finally get together with the original owner and confirmed that the car did run a 1968 over-the-counter 302 . This will be a departure- as I have always known this Nova as a Sleeper and it was bit of a hero on the streets as recently as the 1990's when I was in high school and certainly before.

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww101/Plowman7/Plowman%20Scans/1993Nova.jpg (http://s710.photobucket.com/user/Plowman7/media/Plowman%20Scans/1993Nova.jpg.html)

Today, there really isn't much of a chance for the big surprise. People get excited just to see cars form the 1960's is a way that hadn't been realized 20 years ago. So we are going back to a Day 2 theme. Early on, the car had Cragars and a hot 302. Here is our take on a Hot 302!

<object width="425" height="350"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/M1dQfoJeNUo"></param> <param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/M1dQfoJeNUo" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"> </embed></object>

To say we are satisfied with the new short stroke motor would be an understatement! We were able to make 500+hp out of this little mill with a bit of rpm. The Nova has had 4.88 gears since 1968 and they'll be hanging around some more.

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww101/Plowman7/Vargo%202013/IMG_8749_zpse34b64fa.jpg (http://s710.photobucket.com/user/Plowman7/media/Vargo%202013/IMG_8749_zpse34b64fa.jpg.html)

The 350 LT1 that is currently in the car was due for valve springs and some other freshen-up components so we decided to try and trace things back to its 1968 Day 2 configuration. Keeping with the spirit of that idea, we sourced a 1968 CE block from sYc member Danny D. It was a virgin bore motor and in excellent condition 3959512 dated J 10 8 with CEO 0899 10 stamped on the pad. thread for ref: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=203132

Next we bought a set of 1968 291 heads which are original 2.02's. Fortunately, Tim Napa68 had just what we needed. The heads got a full overhaul. Other than a bit of bowl work behind the intake valves, the heads remained stock. Ports were all left untouched. We did knock compression down to 9.3:1 to be more street friendly and with a good ring package we don't think we're losing much dynamically over the OE slugs and rings. Bearing spacers to run a 283 crank.

Had a bit more fun with the Day 2 theme and topped it off with an Edelbrock STR-10 intake and a pair of 660's. Tossed in an old points distributor we were lucky enough to run on Nova Jed's SUN Distributor machine.

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww101/Plowman7/Nova%20Jed/dizzy4_zpsb895f420.jpg (http://s710.photobucket.com/user/Plowman7/media/Nova%20Jed/dizzy4_zpsb895f420.jpg.html)

Cam selection isn't gonna be made public for whole world to see/debate. Just grab me at a show if you want to talk. This is just the beginning of the whole Day 2 revival and I'll be looking forward to updating you as it evolves. The key points here are that we have relatively stock 1968 casting 291 heads, 9.3:1 pump gas friendly compression with an old school Crossram intake carbureted and an old school GM points distributor cranking out over 500 hp with as many Day 2 parts as we could use! We couldn't be happier! These results were with 93 octane we picked up on the way to the dyno from a random Sunoco station.

My buddy Andy is now with Hilborn Injection, but we go way back a lot longer than that. It was nice to collaborate with him after all these year. Thanks pal!

Love the 302 and the power your making, 4:88's are just the icing on the cake. Heck, I'd just love to go for a ride in it...I'd get into some trouble behind the wheel. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif

What a great day 2 build Paul...the 302 is music to my ears in the way it winds up and the HP that that little screamer makes.

Thanks for sharing your special day with us and the great story leading up to the build. Seems like a long journey but it all

came together at the right time.

Thanks for sharing guys!

I love the sound of a high and fast reving little Chevy. I can't wait to see the engine in the car. That is some oil pan, great looking set up, you just don't see a lot of cross rams anymore.
Congratulations on some real impressive numbers!

Paul good luck keeping Plowman under control! Better get him a cheap set of tires to burn up.

I really enjoyed working with my Dad, Andy and Dave M. It was great having Dave there at the dyno cause he knew just how to finesse the valve covers off with these beastly intakes. Dave also worked out a nice system to speed up jet changes. Much improved form our first time! A real shame my hands were so busy at those time, I would have liked to had some action shots. Thanks for all the help!

Here is the old engine bay. Back in the 1990's the 780 needed a freshen-up so I bought my Dad a Demon Carb which were new and hot at the time. Other than that, pretty much the way it has been since the early 1970's. I'll have to see about getting this stuff out so we can make the bay look young again.

I was wondering the same thing about the BBC when I saw the cut shock towers.

Small blocks with &quot;production&quot; type heads like tight lobe centers. My gut tells me you are right - this &quot;secret&quot; cam isn't ground on 114 LSA. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

markjohnson
01-16-2015, 05:45 PM
I'm thinking solid roller also with those kind of #'s and yep . . . those shock towers just scream &quot;once hadda rat&quot; along with a little coil-over assistance going on there!

PxTx
01-16-2015, 08:28 PM
You guys are pretty sharp and not surprised little is getting by here.

Yes, after the 302 was lost due to at least one fatal over-rev, the BBC went in. The high revs of the 302 became a challenge to shift, as the chassis would flex. Prior to the failure, the car was brought to Bill Jenkins for an evaluation. At the time, Bill suggested a roll bar and/or a hydraulic bearing but before these solutions could be done the 302 was lost.

In addition to the shock tower and helper springs, it has a pair of Eelco ball joint spacers. A pic of these will come soon. I really like the way the Nova sits with these mods and the small block. Most Nova's don't sit this tall.

It's not a 302, it's a LT1 350. This is actually where I would think a roller cam'ed, 2X4 motor of that size should be Hp wise. BUT I'm surprised at how low the RPM's were honestly, I was thinking another 5-700RPM to get those numbers.

The Dyno engine is a 302 , the current engine in the Nova is a 350 LT1 soon to be replaced by the 302.

PxTx
01-19-2015, 02:25 PM
The LT1 is what is presently in the car. It could use valve springs and seal and so we justified doing a fresh build. We actually were thinking of putting a Big Block back in to it- but after hearing form the original owner and confirming the whole 302 story we've heard all these years, well we decided to follow that path.

With a modern set of heads, this thing would really start revving and making more HP, but we were starting to see the limits of the 291 ports. We substituted the small journal crank in the 1968 block just because we didn't find a &quot;302 large journal&quot; which we were satisfied with. I would love to hear the song at 7500 or so, but we just don't have enough flow. Despite that, I love the look of the 291 heads, no accessory holes and all, plus the crossram intake. Once it is installed with those fenderwell headers done in white- it should look as good as it performs!

Salvatore
01-19-2015, 04:11 PM
I think you are good with the 291 heads. Limitations are more on the drag strip and trying to set a national record or winning Class at an NHRA event. Those heads will not hold you back as much as the car itself will unless you do a bunch of chassie mods.

PxTx
01-19-2015, 04:40 PM
There is a big threshold we don't want to cross. We are on the ragged edge of where stock blocks should be used. Yes, I know there are guys making more with stock blocks but I also have seen enough fail to know better. We don't want to put a roll bar in it either. It becomes a real slippery slope.

I measured 7 quarts and the factory dip stick registered about 3/4 full. Probably could take 12 but it was happy with 7 on the dyno. I'm glad you guys dig the pan. Might not be exact 1968 technology but I really like it anyway.

So tonight the 67 Nova made its way back to the garage to get ready for the swap. It was late and together want to wake the neighborhood. The easy solution was the electric golf cart and an NMW tow bar. I actually pulled it into the trailer with the golf cart too, it does a great job! I might do this more often.

We were fortunate my Mom took a pic, cause I was too focused on getting things done. After she went in and printed a copy of this, we sat around and talk about some of our favorite stories growing up around all the muscle cars. Here is a brief update on this fun project. I'm happy to say we've spent the last month running around and slowly working on some fine tuning. I can't tell you how nice it is to be able to enjoy the car after this little re-fresh.

I had an old college buddy who just retired from the Air Force spend a weekend in February and we finally removed the old LT-1 to get this next phase started. Thanks Matt. I'll get a pic of us placed somewhere in this thread. Between the cold weather, my own scheduling conflicts and obligations in other areas, we were stalled out from around February of 2016 to June!

There was building anxiety, as getting this car back up and running was something I knew needed to happen sooner than later- and I wasn't the only one this was affecting. I was aware of the situation, and though I would have loved to have a hand, how would my Dad feel if the car left his garage? This is a garage where a ton of cars were torn down, modified re-built and completed. My Mom sprung a risky little &quot;Overhaul&quot; surprise on my Dad for Father's Day. I could sense a little apprehension in his voice, but with a big smile he said &quot;We'll get it ready to go!&quot;

My Mom and I already selected the shop and scheduled the time. Mike's Hot Rod Garage in Hatboro was the obvious choice. We knew Mike Clark and Bob Stanfield for years (20 or 30?) and they &quot;got&quot; what we were doing. Keeping true to the car's past. The fact it is a local car known to many, since new only help with the enthusiasm for this little project!

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww101/Plowman7/DSCF0024_zpsmjljk1ad.jpg (http://s710.photobucket.com/user/Plowman7/media/DSCF0024_zpsmjljk1ad.jpg.html)

I've got better pics of the guys, but for now, here is Mike going over the extras like new fuel tank and fuel system.

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww101/Plowman7/DSCF0001_zpsbcvmvpkw.jpg (http://s710.photobucket.com/user/Plowman7/media/DSCF0001_zpsbcvmvpkw.jpg.html)

Sometimes the little stuff all gets forgotten and the fun stuff, like stabbing in the motor is what you focus on. Here is the only pic I have of Bob right now. No worries, I've got some follow tech we used to solve some issue and more of the guys involved and tech will show up in a &quot;Tarantino&quot; timeline recap later.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww101/Plowman7/DSCF0008_zpsitjh7qty.jpg (http://s710.photobucket.com/user/Plowman7/media/DSCF0008_zpsitjh7qty.jpg.html)

Managing the freshly coated, early 1970's headers can be a challenge. These guys did us right.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww101/Plowman7/DSCF0010_zpshnoxsddh.jpg (http://s710.photobucket.com/user/Plowman7/media/DSCF0010_zpshnoxsddh.jpg.html)

http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww101/Plowman7/DSCF0019_zpsl2i1u4eb.jpg (http://s710.photobucket.com/user/Plowman7/media/DSCF0019_zpsl2i1u4eb.jpg.html)

So after a very short few weeks, the car fired up and we drove this little 500hp beast home!

In true Day 2 theme, we brought the car home and put the Cragar's on! Kids had fun marking the driveway while I sorted out the new, larger front tires.

Went to a couple local shows and the smile on my Dad's face says it all!

The car really runs great! I will get some better video clips up in the near future. This motor through these 40+ year old Corvair Turbo mufflers have the perfect sound of true nostalgia muscle!

Thanks guys! My whole family has been have fun with the car the last few weeks and the enthusiasm form folks at the cruise events and car shows has been beyond our expectations!

Car will certainly see track time. Need to finish up the fine tuning. Though I would like to get it to the track this Fall, that my be a bit ambitious. Likely Spring 17 will be the time.

Still need to figure a way to get the old Sun tach to be happy with the MSD.

Street manners are continuing to improve. Once we dialed in the vacuum advance in, the idle in gear and at stop lights came right around. Still need to hook up a wideband O2 and clean it up a bit down low, but it is probably better now than 50% of the cars at the events we've been to.

I did have to play around with the governor in the TH350. I guess with the 3800 stall convertor and the 4.88 gear, it would shift 1-2 &amp; 2-3 in a matter of only a few feet wiht part throttle. Now, with light throttle it shift @ 15mph and 25mph.

We've been running the white wall radials and the Cragars with Hurst slicks. Need to figure out what rubber and rims we can put together to be safe and predictable at the track.

Traction bars are still the home made ones from 1971 that my Dad made. It used to have an old air bag system if you look close on the picture with the gas tank, you can see the air bag brackets above the leaf spring. needless to say- we want to dial in the traction using old school tech- just because it can be done and it is true to the way these cars were.

I've love to pic a date and do a track rental. If there is enough interest, we can book something for many of the East Coast guys to have fun at this Spring. Otherwise, there is enough regular TNT events to get it done by ourselves.

Catching up a bit as I compile more pictures. My sister Eileen and her husband Fran helped us put the steering back together and push it into the trailer. Not in the pic, and a great guy I don't want to leave out is Dave &quot;67Novaboy&quot; for his help on parts ad friendship. We had to overhaul the steering column as part of this update and he came through. I would have hated to move this car without steering. Thanks Dave!

Here is my Mom, steering the Nova into the trailer. If the motor was in the car still, we probably could have use the tow tabs. Just too light in the front without it and wasn't that fun to steer.

After getting the car there- Mike, Bob, my Dad and I were all thrilled with how well this project went. They did a great job and the parts &amp; prep my Dad had done really helped this get wrapped up quickly. Thanks Mom, Mike &amp; Bob!

Earlier in this thread, I mentioned the big contribution our long time friend Andy Starr of Hilborn was. We couldn't be happier with how this little motor turned out. Mike and Bob were also fans of how well this old stuff ran in the Nova!

Last pic for tonight is this one here of local legend and hard core historical aficionado Dave Schrader. Gotta thank him for recalling so many of the clues of the Nova's early life and helping me get in touch with the original owner, Bob Moody.

This car has been with Paul most of it's life and couldn't be in better hands! Great family project of this 67 Nova...Thanks to Paul for getting ME into Nova's way back in 77 at Hopkins Ford where Paul worked. He rolls in the bay of the shop one night while I was detailing a body shop car, the Nova rumbles in with it's 3&quot; exhaust and the LT1 and rolls by me to the front of the shop with a few quick hits of the throttle and I was hooked on Nova's ever since!

Great job everyone did and looks perfect! Paul did this right with collecting parts for when the time came to change it over...young Paul and family did a amazing job on getting the 67 ready for the transplant. Great see Paul happy and back in the 67 where he belongs!

Thumbs up on this one guys!!!

Had a nice surprise this weekend. My buddy Matt who recently retired form the Air Force and is taking a job with the Nacy in Honolulu stopped by to see me. He even brought one of his bikes up- cause he says a Triumph really isn't ideal foe being stuck on an island!

He is the same guy who helped me pull the motor out, so it was nice for my Dad and I to take him out in the Nova. We went out to a Cars &amp; Coffee- though I think they need to call it Caffeine &amp; Gasoline for some reason- at Old Forge Motor Cars in Lansdale. Would be nice to get some more of the locals to attend- so open invitation to meet up next Saturday morning. If you say you'e going- we'd be happy to meet you there!

Tried to get a video of the car idling, though the cell phone video doesn't really do it justice. Crank up the speakers! This is the vintage Hooker's through the vintage 2.5 Corvair Turbo mufflers- very early 1970's stuff. A great nostalgic sound before Flowmaster &amp; Borla took over.

I think he got some in car video, but if not, we'll get some fresh stuff.

Side note for you bike guys. Matt surprised me Friday by showing up and taking me to a little GTG at a local vintage bike shop. Great music and people for a nice Fall night.

Novadude, I was looking to meet you- shame we did not hook up. I did vote for your car. Overall the show was good. DAY 2 Novas are my favorite.

I appreciate the kind words for my Dad's car. It was fun to so many people dig it. Often at the local cruise nights- the casual crowd doesn't always pick up on the vintage theme. I'm sure you get that with your 65 at times, so when we can bring them to a show full of enthusiasts- it's nice to feel the appreciation.

Did you get a chance to run it down the strip yet? Can you get it to SCR20? I'd love to see it there.

This year's SCR isn't gonna happen for the Nova, but I'll be there. Car is getting sorted bit by bit. Need to modify the idle circuit presently.

I hope to get it out to a SCR event to race in the future. Maybe I'll even flat to it with a bar from the hotel to the track. Thanks for the enthusiasm!

For now, gonna look to get in a track rental to see it run. I'm confident it will meet our expectations- but not gonna be disappointed if we need to make adjustments on the 1st pass. Heck- not even sure what rear tire is best for us at the track.

Yes... I get the same thing. Most people don't quite "get it" at local cruise nights, as they tend to be drawn to shiny billet stuff.

I wasn't by my car much on Saturday, and the few times I walked by your car, I didn't see you there. I live right down the road in Shippensburg, so I'll likely be back next year. If the weather is OK I am going to try and go to the York reunion in 2 weeks.
