It was 70 years ago today that a group of brave young Marines hoisted old glory atop a lonely volcanic mountain on the island of Iwo Jima. This battle was one of the bloodiest of the war...as the Japanese were now defending the home islands and they fought to death. The few remaining veterans of this epic battle are mostly in their 90's.

We must always remember their sacrifice and courage and all the others who served then and now. It seems we are always called on to fight evil and protect the innocent...that never changes.

Lest we forget <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/flag.gif

What a team effort -- both in raising Old Glory and what it took to get there ... all those with boots on the ground, battling at sea and those providing air cover. AWESOME!!

Not to take anything away from the U.S. soldiers who fought & won & lived,& the ones who fought & won & lost their lives there, but that iconic flag raising photo was actually staged hours later after the initial raising.

Here's the original flag raising hours earlier, and the true story, that seems to never be mentioned.Lest we not forget. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/flag.gif

Rick...thanks for adding that to the thread. It is an important part of the story and one that many folks are not aware of.

The symbolic nature of those flags will hopefully endure forever <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/flag.gif

GOD BLESS THE VETERANS OF OUR COUNTRY!!

Too many people forget what they do and have done and get complacent in their little, comfortable daily lifestyles!! Unfortunately it takes a major event like 911 to make people realize how damn lucky we our to have the brave men and women protecting our country not only in the US Armed Forces but in our Law Enforcement and Fire Dept. professions as well....
