I just bought a 69 rs z28 daytona yellow 410 rear project complete numbers matching drive train other than the block i cant see a vin .my question is I know the block is the born with to the car .but I cant see no numbers off the side of the block I see one number barley its a 6 witch my vin starts with that but that's it the block looks like its never been tampered with at all still all std .the build date is 02 D .is this normal and how bad will this hurt the value of the car when restored what would you call the motor to the car unknown ? All the dates line up perfect to the build date of the car .the owner has had it since 72 that block was in the car when he bought it.the block does have the VO225DZ. Casting date B 19 9 the heads are both dated b 20 9 what would you do if you cant see anything

Are you talking about the stamp by the oil filter? I would say very little if the pad stamp is good. If there was another vin by the oil filter than that would be a different story. Do you have a protectoplate that matches the pad stamp?

Post pics. You might also ask the guy that owned it forever you give you a notarized statement attesting to it being the orig. engine. It is common for the #'s to be unreadable down by the filter. Don't stamp it.

Would you still call the car numbers matching or born with motor thanks

Thought VIN was on the pass side front engine pad till APRIL 1969. Just my opinion. Good luck with the car sounds like a neat car.

Nope: "The Norwood plant stamped the VIN on the engine pad on early cars and moved the stamp by the oil filter in the December 68 timeframe. Los Angeles was not as consistent and the VIN stamp location varied during the year."

Brent: Like Charley says, don't stamp it. If it is a Norwood car, the vin partial should def. be by the oil filter. I had one stamped so lightly that only the N was readable even with a jewelers lupe. It MAY show up under magnification or in an enhanced digital picture. You will probably have to wait until the engine is out of the car to get really good pics with different lighting, and hope for a winner.

Get the NCRS report and start from their looking for paper.

They are next to impossible to read in the car. If its very visable its probably not real from what I have seen. I had my block clean and used a soapstone to be able to make out most of the numbers with the light just right. My 03D car has a block stamp of V0307

on my 70 Z, I could barely make out one or two numbers... I used thinner and a rag and wiped continually for about 15 mins to clean the paint off the block...the only thing left with orange paint was the VIN number fairly clear. And then a good cell phone up close could take pics....good luck !!

post some pics...sounds like a nice car !!

I have seen original assembly line installed blocks and transmissions wo a vin. Oddly enough the two motors and 2 trans were from different cars and all 4 were Z28s. Blocks are much rarer to find Im told wo a vin than transmissions. You dont have any problem there.

Id stick with "born with drivetrain" it cant be proven wrong, maybe get Jerry to inspect it

I see the 6 and I see a 2. It's stamped on the very edge.
You need to highlight the digits.

Bet you won't need 1st gear most of the time.... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Boy, that's tuff, I would love to go at it with a 10x glass up on a stand.
As far as the blocks that were never vin stamped, tha Orange 69 COPO Camaro I had in Brians display at MCACN has in it a dated for the car MN block, never stamped, and we left it as is. So it has happened.

Brent, i have the same problem with my Z. They are so lightly stamped you can't read it. With a mag glass with the right light and angle i was able to read the letter N and a couple of numbers which are in the vin. Spray some paint on the area and wipe it off with a rag while it's still wet, you might get lucky and see something. Jerry even states in his book that most of the vins stamped down there are hard to read.

All numbers look legit, call it numbers matching or original factory drivetrain.

In the straight on picture it looks like a 7 lines up with the dowel. Close to the top edge

Looks like you are good to go Brent. I would not worry about it.
Looks to be a real nice find!

To get accurate photos of indented stampings you need to light the area in question from a shallow angle, and take a ton of photos with the light moving up in angle each time. A little water can aid in providing contrast once it starts evaporating. Any indented areas tend to absorb and hold the moisture longer than the virgin, cast material thereby providing a better image.

Kind of like the sun rising from the horizon of the block's edge, up to about 45 degrees. You are trying to get a shadow to cast into the indentions. Taking a photo with the light hitting perpendicular to the surface only serves to wash out any possible stamping marks.

Incredible score Brent. NICE colors and great setup!
That is the best street perfomance gear setup you could get M20 and 4.10 is AWESOME... don't even have to rev it up when letting out the clutch and WOW get a 3.73 M21 car beside you and he hasn't a chance in hell.

Actually no as #'s matching often indicates restamp parts & original factory drivetrain a completely different thing!
Obviously the 'matching #'s' term is used purposely w/ restamps to blur the reality...stating specifically and/or including 'original drivetrain' in a description when so can add value to those in the know although inspection still always req'd to confirm.
Another nice grab Brent, congrats!

What build month did they put D80 on the trim tag for spoiler opt.My car has two different size trunk springs and the spoiler has yellow on the under side of it

I think it in late may that the D80 fist appears sporadically on D80 optioned Camaros.

I think 05D is the first build week for the D80 coded TT's.

How rare is the headlight washer and wiper pump for a RS Option

KevinW
04-20-2015, 08:24 PM
It was part of the RS option, so over 37700 Z22 optioned Camaros were ordered in 1969. Plus they are reproed now.

My 0310DZ block has a terrible area down by the oil filter to stamp too. I have looked for a vin with no luck.

As ordered on a non-RS CE1 is very rare. Only 116 built.

I believe that an original RS wiper motor is a little more difficult to find.
