Well I finally did it,after searching for t he past 7 years I purchased a 68 Camaro in Corvette Bronz. The basis for my quest was my first car was a 68 ,327 Auto ,black deluxe Houndstooth interior, with CB paint. I wanted one again and was not particular about the engine type as long as it had that color and trim combo.
While attending the Portland swap meet a few weeks ago I spoke with a vendor who has his 68 since May 72 and was now ready to sell.
The Good
Original color one repainted in 1975.
Correct Black houndstooth deluxe interior. Removed from car in 1976 when car was drag raced.
Car was sidelined in 1984 when engine blew.
Engine rebuilt in 85 but after 100 miles car was not driven again.
Never left the Wilamette Valley of Oregon.
79,000 miles from 68 to 85.
Engine has most correct pieces except block.
All born with body panels and 0 rust.
Things to correct
Rear end is a 69 BV
Get correct rallye wheels
Needs headliner (mice)
Engine compartment too glossy.
Needs tires.
Eventual repainted
Remove traction bars and frame stiffners.
Get correct exhaust.

Nice score!!! Is it a cowl plenum car or open element? If open can you look and see what style the screen print is on the bottom side? I would like to add it to my data on the air cleaners.. Beautiful car and it is cherry as can be..!!.. Needless to say I am jealous.. Congrats!

Open element Air cleaner, picking up the car in two weeks, will get back to you.
Very cool car!!! Is that a extra cost color??
My neighbor bought a 68 Camaro when he got back from Nam in about 70-71 and it was that color.
His was a 327 4 speed with the stripe that wraps around the fenders and header panel.
A year or so later he swapped engines with his buddy's 69 Z-28. The 302 was heavily worked and sounded nasty.

What is the zone number and dealer code Paul?
I only recently figured out that my black Oregon Z ( zone 19, dealer 361) came from Owen Chevrolet, Hood River, Oregon.

Here are some updated photos of my 68 Z. I spent the 3 months since I bought the car correcting a lot of Underhood items, cleaning and getting the car in street worthy condition. The walnut wheel and bumper guards were added by me.

My favorite color for a 68. I have seen several in person (rode around in a 68 Z this color in high school). One of my friends here in the okc area has one now. I have NEVER seen a picture of one that did the car justice. I don't think it can be captured on film or by digital camera. So, all you guys wondering what the big deal is must see one of these in person to appreciate it.
Congrats. I'm jealous.

There was an L34 or 5 bronze car in or around Oak Ridge (Chattanooga) area back in the late 90's early 2000's.. It was a dead ringer to the one posted above..

Update on my 68 Camaro,I have now had it 4 years and have enjoyed some nice summer cruizing. Over the past three years I acquired a correct date coded BV rear end ,same for an M21 Trans and a March 68 MO block. All components have been rebuilt and are ready to go in the car.
Step one was to remove the 69 Code BV and get it to the new owner, springs came out and a cleanup started on the underside.
Remember this car spent its entire life in the Willamette Valley of Oregon where they produce great Pinot Noirs and preserve 68 Camaros.
The underside is amazing, after alight cleaning with Zep 505,scrubbing and a drying evidence of factory over spray and undercoating in the wheel wells are evident .
I am not doing any restoration of the underside and just going to clean and preserve whats there. The car was drag raced extensively and had a roll bar. I will only fill the holes with plugs as I dont want to do any welding or re painting.
Rear end coming out:

Used our big steel table to support front end in case of weight transfer, trunk had about 200 lbs of heads and cranks as counter weight, safety first.

Got gas tank out and made room to remove springs, which will be cleaned up and all new bushings.
Next came the cleanup, happy with results from first pass, exhaust will be dropped to make more room.

Can anyone chime in here and comment on the wheel well undercoating, it does not appear to be a dealer application as it is only in the wheel wells sand some over spray. This is a Van Nuys built car.

The original owner traded the car in in 1972 It has always been in the Willamette valley, a very moderate climate. The second owner drag raced the car and I doubt he did drive it in any wet weather. I saw early photos with it on a trailer. Dont know how it accumulated 79,000 miles.

My last postings are over a year old .these next updates are from the summer of 2002. The front clip was removed and the subframe removed to replace with one that didn’t have a big dent in it. I had it blasted and epoxy prime red until I got around to finish and assembly.

At this point I was going to re assemble the car and break in the new driveline. As my Olds 442 was about to come back to me I decided to send the Camaro for painting (Nov 2022).
So with the front clip loosely in place and all trim and door hardware removed off it went.

All the detail work I did was carefully covered up and the frame will be removed for the firewall paint and preparation.

Remember ,this is a central Oregon car showing no signs of rust anywhere. Well none showing. There were some in the rear glass channel.

The car had a few visible dents in it. Top of left fender, right quarter panel and a prev repair on the left QP.
One that surprised us both was one on the roof. The windshield appeared to be the original yet this old dent was there.

First time I've seen this thread and it is very interesting. The undercoating you referred to earlier appears very similar to what is on my '67 LOS car. The extension panel having some rust is to be expected, but what really caught my eye was all the "extra" holes in it and the right quarter panel flange. Wondering what that is for. My extension panel across the bottom was mostly non-existent, so I have no idea if it had those too. My original quarter panels don't have the extra holes. I like seeing the gobbed up braze in the corners too. I'm trying to replicate that, but it is a smoother application. My bodyman just laughs at me and said I should plug all those joint gaps with seam sealer and move on, but he was production for 50 years and doesn't understand how to slow down and preserve/replicate original detail.
The dent in the roof MAY have been done at the factory and repaired there. I worked at a Ford factory in St Paul for the 1972 model year and it was amazing the freak accidents that happened and were butchery "fixed", painted and sent to the dealer. If only they could talk. As I remove 4 layers of paint and gallons of high build primer from mine, it appears it was used in a demo derby in a past life...:frown: Yours is pristine in comparison, congrats...

great pics of a really nice car. I know I have never seen this color in person on a camro unless at best if was used on a 68 vette.
In some of your pictures years back, you show a front tire that looks like a blue streak radial on the correct wheels, and the tires looks really cool, no rounded edges. Can you share more on those tires? I am having issues myself pulling the trigger on ordering goodyear E70 -15 tires for my 68/z (not wanting to wait that long).

These are Goodyear Blue Streak police Radials 215-70-15 on Camaro 15x7 wheels. 3 are NOS and 4 are barely used. This size was used on Dodge Diplomat police cars. I had 2 sets of these in the 70’s and they are a fantastic tire. Kelsey is using these molds to do their new Polyglass Radial look alike. Only one size is available right noe and that is FR70-14.
I am restoring a 1978 Chev Nova 9C1 police car and that is what these are for. Right now they are shop rollers.

Why did you remove the lead from the 1/4 seams?

Looks great. Has there been issues with the original lead with certain paint types? I'm not a paint guy so just trying to learn.

55 year old lead can cause problems with modern chemicals. My restorer likes to eliminate any Come Backs created by taking short cuts.
His mission is to do the metal work, eliminate any issues that might originate from underneath.
Old lead, might react to modern fillers and or paints.
Never heard of this. The lead was not smooth on my 69, so I took it down to clean bare lead and re-leaded it. I used epoxy primer over it, and have had no issues. If figured the lead was less likely to shrink over time as opposed to any other filler. That's been 15 years ago, and all is still good.
I didn't look back to see; did Mark use a different filler in place of lead? Or did he just use new lead?
Would be interested to know.

I will ask what he plans to use, he has mostly done convertibles for me so leaded roof seams have not been an issue. On my Olds convertibles the QP seam behind the trunk lid was not lead.
Guessing one of the aluminum reinforced fillers.
My experience is that even the regular two part fillers (with a catalyst) shrink some over time.
I haven't tried the aluminum reinforced.

Here is Mark’s response as to why he removes old Lead.
Lead releases gases over the years. Looked at many cars in my 30yrs and lots of pimpling can be seen in these lead areas. So why then risk something like that on the body which can be very costly to fix after its all refinished ? To me its standard procedure I’ve done to every restoration in 30 years.
All I have ever used to replace it is short strand fibre glass reinforced filler over top of epoxy, never seen an issue on any cars I have completed and have seen many of my projects years to decades later. They have stood the test of time.

Nothing to get excited about ??!! Who are you kidding, the metal work alone is perfection. I WISH I had a person to do that, instead of all the filler work most throw on and call good. I have a bodyman working on my Camaro and he filled the lead seam with the same, short strand, fiberglass. Unfortunately, as a production person, he doesn't see the need to do perfect metal finishing and uses too much filler, in my opinion, to get everything blocked out.

These photos are from Thursday, maybe the last I can post for two weeks, as I am going off grid until Mar 6.
Mark removed a piece of damaged QP section, re formed it and welded it back in.
