At first glance, I would say yes just from the position of the 130 MPH hash mark. However, it looks awfully glossy for a factory 1969 speedo.

my exact thought....i am no expert but the first thing i noticed is how shiney/glossy it is..nearly all i have seen are almost flat in gloss

What I see is a decal from the 80's.
That was the first 140 speedo reproduction part available. .
Looks as if the vinyl grain is showing as is the semi gloss black color......
Real speedos are tampoed aluminum (silk screen)
Notice the 2 attachment screws.... the metal body behind the aluminum speedo face is pushed through......via someone's attempt to push a little to hard applieing the decal, then over tightening the screws. .
Just my "used car eyes" as a guide.....

Compare with this one. Real as far as I know.

Just take it out and look closely for the decal edges.

The first picture is a reproduction IMO, and Andy's is real'
There are minor differences in the MPH graduations
Compare these two shots below. zero in on the 10 mph and 130 mph long hashmark and take note where in intersects the odometer box. Try laying a paper stright edge on your screen.
Also 30 and 110 in relation to the screws.

In Brent's pic, could the blurriness of the photo be a distortion from being taken through the plastic lense giving the 'grainy' appearance of the gauge where actually its as flat as the others pictured ?
I took two pics of a speedo Behind plastic and one loose.......the face of the black does look distinctly different.......
Looking at all the other info....I'd say Now, Its a Real One.....
Me bad.....
The early reproduction vinyls sure look fuzzy and not flat....
Acrylic lenses are a bit wavey........

Note where the M P H is in relation to the 140 and zero bars, on the real ones it lines up about the mid point (look at the horizontal bar in the H ) , the repro go up much higher on the M P H (almost to the top of the vertical bar on the H ) ...lots of small differences, also not where the 140 bar would intersect the mile indicator in the odometer. The real would intersect at the lower left corner of the "box" and the repros would intersect inside the box nowhere near the corner, more towards the center.

After looking at Brents photo (not great) I have to back track and say it does look like a real one.

Wow, you guys are detailed!!!
The Firebird repops are actually very accurate, but since all 68-69's came with the same speedo, there was never an effort to just make a silk screen version.
Great info, thanks guys. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

The picture Brent posted of the 140 certainly looks like an early decal version to me. Look at the right side, the numbers from 90 to 140 are almost to the aluminum edge, not at all like the originals or later repros.

Brent - spend a couple of minutes & look at it more closely before we bring Sherlock Holmes out of retirement!

Is this from your Orange car or another treasure hunt find ?
The Orange car is apart and at SCW....correct ?
Then its a matter of pulling it from the housing....
as you're gonna clean it up as well..... yes?
I went through my stash finding 7 speedos....they all have the indent into the aluminum face as well as all the Originals pictured.
I think its real. ...after all this.. unless it is a decal.

The backside is the best way to tell, the originals will have the printed numbers/lines visible in the aluminum.

Just picked this up from an noted collectors estate. It is labeled "real 140". The numbers seem to line up properly, namely the 10 and 130 with the odometer cutout. Also MPH seems to be in correct position. Not sure if finish is correct or if someone clear coated it to protect it. Also rear is dull grey, but has red inspection stamps that seem to read "Pass".
Thoughts?
This collector had the rarest of the rare and this was well protected so my hunch is that it is real, a prototype, or something rare.

The new re-pop is pretty darn good. The 10 & 130 alignment is corrected.

Thanks for your input Mike. The consensus is that it's real as you indicated. Now, I need to figure out a value for it. Thoughts?

Because how seldom they show up I'll guess at least the 4-500. range. It could do well on ebay also ? With a reserve ?

the last real one I bought was 3 years ago for $500.00. Not sure what the new, improved re-pops are going to do to the prices of real ones. Probably a good time to put it on eBay like Mike suggested.

I see Heartbeat City has one for $3995. I'm assuming this is Yenko and COPO only?

140 speedo is copo 9737 sportscar pkg . All 69 Yenko COPO 9561 Camaros were ordered with 9737. Not sure the % of regular 9561 cars were ordered with 9737.

Did that come from Merle"s estate? I sold him 4 original ones years ago and that looks like one of them.

Yes. I knew Merle for 35+ years. It was in a box that was marked "Rare Original 140MPH, Don't sell." Can I call you? I want to make sure I represent it honestly. Thanks
