Does anyone have have the Feb 2008 issue of MCR? If so I was wondering if you could scan an article and send it to me.
Thanks

There's an article in it about a '59 Biscayne with a Duntov reference. Another article about it appeared in the Oct '58 issue of Motor Trend. I need to find that one too.

Used to call such cars "Q-ships." Doesn't look like much but hauls a$$.

Thanks very much. The article still leaves a lot of unanswered questions. IT's been called Zora's "skunk works" car and there's a lot of mystery about it (them). Two are known to exist today. One is restored and the other is a shell. Both found in Oregon and both built at Oakland Ca. a couple of days apart.
The restored one is being sold by RK Motors in Charlotte (there's that name again) and I was speaking with the fellow who is buying it.
The mystery (to me anyway) is why Zora would have had some special engines built for them and then had the car built at Oakland rather than right there in Detroit. The rumor is that 40 cars were built which is way more than any Police agency would order for themselves. I see no reason why Zora would have put that package together if there wasn't an order for them though. Both known cars have SPEC paint which is dark blue and a Trim code that was never published in any Chevy literature.
I'd like to find the Motor Trend article because that was written when the car(s) were built.

Could be they were delivered to the Desert Proving Ground in Mesa, AZ? They also did a lot of 'special' projects out there away from prying eyes.

Based on the photo in that article, at least one of them was in Detroit. It's parked outside the Tech Center.

Very cool subject Verne!
Other than restored as one, it'd be nice to see anything pre resto or whatever is available that indisputably proves the RK example is indeed one of THE original Zora Biscaynes.
Also, what's the added tag seen on the interior of the driver's side A-Pillar... fleet # tag?
Here's the Zora pic again but in one piece...love the Chevrolet Engineering/Tests sign!

My guess is that the tag is a Property Tag. The number is far too high for a car number and it's definitely not a GM tag for an F&SO number. Everything the department owned probably had a property number, right down to the typewriters.
As far as the Duntov connection, it's hard to say since the only piece that he was supposedly involved with was the engine build. Everything else is stock Police car Body & Chassis equipment. The engine has a standard "F" suffix code which is the 250hp 348 with standard trans. (it's a 3-spd)
The car was supposedly restored in Ca. and the new owner is trying to contact them for more information.
It's just a little side research project that landed in my lap. I've never really looked into those cars before.

I agree not a GM tag Verne and expect some kind of dept or property tag too.
Did you note the link to the Motor Trend mag on eBay or have you found it already?
If not an eBayer, I'm sure someone here can make it happen for you...it's cheap and BIN.
Congrats to the owner and hope all goes well w/ the research, please share more if you can.

Well, I'm not sure about the "40 produced" claim. And if the first one was available for the Oct edition of Motor Trend, why were the 2 Known cars built at Oakland at the end of June '59?? I tend to think the two known cars were just regular police cars ordered late in the production year.
After '59 production began, the 305hp 348 was an RPO. 1X4, solid lifter and 11.0CR.
I saw the link. I'm thinking about buying it.
