This may have been discussed before, but in searching couldn't find anything on the subject? Would anyone have information on the Firestone Wide Oval Redlines, if there was a change made too the location of the words Wide Oval in it's production years before the reproductions?

Off the top of my head the lettering is not the only issue with the reproductions, the red line is also in the wrong location on the side wall.

70 copo,

When cleaning the tires preparing for a show, it really had never caught my attention until I had cleaned the reproduction Firestones and pro-ceded on to the original spare. Fresh on my mind I noticed there was quite a bit of difference between them. This is a picture of the original spare tire I got with the Nova and has never been on the car. Not only is the wording different, all the wording is below the redline including the word Firestone partially visible below the trunk shelf. Several other differences, also? No Super Sport Wide Oval wording, just Wide Oval below the redline.

Correct. The correct Goodyear is not reproduced at all, and the repop Firestone seems to have taken a hybrid approach using the proximate line position of the original Goodyear-which forced a change to the script of the side wall. Safe to say the molds for these tires were all new for the repop

A picture to compare the difference of the reproduction Firestone Redline.

They say the repop tires they make are from original molds, must be BS. Seems all the repop stuff today doesn't even come close to the originals they are replacing.

Perhaps the repro Firestone redlines are reproductions from later original versions? Similar to how the 60's white lettered Wide Oval with the small block letters is not reproduced but the larger letter 1970's style is.

Ray,
That's how I remember the original Redlines on my '68 Chevelle.

Dennis & Jason,

Good to see both of you on-line still contributing to the hobby.

I had spotted the difference in the location of the "Wide Oval" placement several years back, but really hadn't noticed how much difference there was in the wording and location, otherwise? This tire will be celebrating 47 years this coming July with the same car.

As for the Goodyear tires, some have used the original molds, but you have to realize that as time went on, there were running line changes. Perfect example is the Goodyear Eagle GT in 215/65/15.... During this tires run from 1982 to 1988, there were 15 documented changes to the tire.

As with many reproduction items, there are compromises made. I know Kelsey spends a great deal of time and effort putting as much of the proper detail in every tire to make the best product he can possibly have made.
