View Full Version : Intake Question

I'm contemplating changing the intake on my car. Here's the overview of my engine/car package.

402 +.040=410ci, 10,5:1 compression, solid roller cam (.640/.647 lift, .236/.242 [email protected], 110 LS), Muncie M22W (2.52 first gear), 4.56 rear. The car weighs 3800 lbs with me in it. I shift the car at 7000 rpm.

I have been running an Edelbrock TM2R intake with a Holley 950 HP carb for a few years now. I have an over the counter 3933163 intake I could modify to work with my motor. I've had people tell me to change it to the 163 intake because I need the dual plane for low end torque and that if I cut the plenum down similar to a 198 intake, it will work fine at 7k rpm. I've also had others tell me to leave the TM2R on for the rpms.

Keep in mind that I know there are better intakes out there like an Edelbrock Air Gap but I want to keep it old school.

Any opinions?

Thanks, Kurt

I say leave her Old School, she runs Great!.....But if you must....try and see how you like the 163.....you can always change it back.

You can try the 163 but the Edelbrock will out perform it in your situation.

X2

Sounds like a pretty balanced setup. The compression is a little low w 110LC as 'effective' compession suffers with that cam. I think a little smaller 800cfm may get you a little better ET IMO only.

I had a 850 dp on it, made 3 passes at the drag strip, pulled the 950 HP out of the box and dropped my ET by .015. This motor loves RPMS and fuel.

It would probably be better to run a smaller carb on the street but it's too much hassle.....I'm lazy!

If your 950 is an older unit, it's actually smaller (cfm-wise) than the 850.

The 80496 has a 1.375" venturi and a 1.750" throttle bore.

A 4781 has a 1.5625" throttle bore and a 1.750" throttle bore.

I have a 163 intake with the Plenum divider already cut down if you want to try it first BEFORE you cut a virgin one...

Keep the TM2. Those just look great. Old school.

Kurt-

Eric is running a cut down 163 in his Chevelle and it seems to do the trick.......I vote for the 163.

I'm not the only one...but I'm not at liberty to discuss who else is running a cut 163 lol. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

The carb is a 80496. It has a lot better throttle response than the 850 did plus, like I said, it runs better at the track.

This intake question is like asking which shifter is better, HurstRam Rod or Mr. Gasket V-Gate? lol I'm thinking of pulling the motor this winter and making some small changes then put it on the dyno. I think that would be the best time to see which intake works best. Otherwise the track.

Another thing I think about is how will the 163 intake work at 7000 rpms?

Thanks for the replies, Kurt <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Crazy deal but I did the exact thing with my L-88...I drag raced it for 10 year with the Tarantula and when I swapped the mill out of my race car and put it in my street car a put a 163 on it.

For the life of me I don't remember if the plenum was chopped out. It has instant throttle response and when it runs good has put up an 11.80 with DOT biters. Funny thing is I'd really like the car to pick up a tenth or two so I'm gonna slam the Tarantula back on for the track. They say the air gap is even better so I've had my eye out for a used one. I have a 427 stinger hood so clearance is not an issue.
