A friend recently came across a car he is interested in buying. It's a clean title, however the trim tag is missing. The owner states that it was removed and lost during the restoration. I know replacement tags along with the proper rivets are available, Would this be a reason not to purchase or not a big deal?

JMHO, but a replacement TT (let's just call it a fake) will raise more questions about the car's identity than a missing tag.
As for the decision to buy or not, it all depends on the car. If it is a hot rod, it's not going to matter a great deal; if the car purports to be a desirable model, color, etc and this can only be confirmed by the TT (i.e. the car has no other docs or provenance), well that would cause me to pass on the car, or value it accordingly if I just really wanted it for some overriding reason.
