I just met a guy that bought a 69 JL8 car brand new (he is digging up pictures of it for me he has when it was new, said he paid 4500 for it). It had the cross ram on it. The car is gone (he sold it for $7K) years ago, but is there a registry for these JL8 cars? Was there 200 of them or 50 or so?
He said it was orange with black stripes (chicago area car).

I own a plain Jane (307, a/c, 4 speed) JL8 car and in talking to a few "experts" in my early days of ownership (about 10 years now) I was told closer to 100 built than 200. Of course Chevrolet had to say there were 200 built to use the brake system in Trans Am racing.

Ed C. had an orange JL8 Z28 with black stripes and black vinyl top. It was in the Chicago west suburbs when he bought in 25 years ago, could be the same car. It did have a crossram and recently sold at a Mecum auction last year or so.

My JL8 was sold at the same dealership as Ed C's, Casey Cole in Bradford, Pa. The window sticker was $4311. My car was red and did not have a factory vinyl top, but a vinyl top was dealer installed.

Bob,
You might want to check with Guy (JL8Z28) he has a nice Dusk Blue JL-8 Z.

He saw my black 69 and thats when he told me about his car. He said it was super fast. What was sad, he thought it was probably worth $50K today. I said, well...ah...yeah... (I did not tell him likely a lot more than that). I did tell him those brakes were pretty rare. I will pester him for pic, he says he still has them.

Not true. Like the cross-ram, which was never an option, all Chevy had to establish was that JL8 was available to anyone. The Chevy engineer in charge of developing the option was at Road America several years ago for a vintage Corvette feature. I asked him about this and he stated the SCCA felt they had been deceived in allowing Chevy to run it in '68 when it wasn't really available. So for '69 they wanted proof and accompanied a racer to a dealer to personally witness the purchase of a factory-built Camaro with JL8. The '68 FIA homologation documents are curious. The photos show front and rear disc brakes but refer to them as J56.
In addition to the one I briefly owned there were several other JL8 Z/28s in the immediate area. I have seen probably a dozen others in my time and have copies of factory documents for several more. I see no reason to question the production figure of 206 cars.

If anything, I would guess that there were more than 206 built. Not saying that that is the case, but based on the number of documented cars I have seen over the years as well as info from original owners.......it just makes me think.
It would be interesting to know how many are in the CRG data base.
The original owner of my former Garnet Red RS JL8 (Thanks Jeff) actually bought two new JL8s. The other one was Hugger Orange.
Ed's former JL8 resides in a collection here in Chicago Land.

I talked to Wayne Guiinn who wrote a book on the JL8s and he said he thought that 150 were sold ,the brakes were $500 most people didn't want to spend that much. that was the cost of the Z28 option

Wayne told me the same thing. They didn't build that many 427/435 67 Vettes either but we all know someone that has one or two. Just sayin....

40, with some culling of questionable cars. The two JL8 cars from Dale Chev [yellow/yellow RS & orange/orange X77] are not included.

I left it in Chicago about 1980. Maybe still there.
