Just got back from picking up my next 69 Chevelle SS post sedan resto project.
There are a few pictures in the for sale section under the Ebay, Craigslist heading, but I will be able to post any progress on the car in this section.
Just a couple pics for now to show as we loaded the car, and then driving by US131 Martin Dragway.

Car trailered very well coming back, and it was nice that the weather had overcast skies. Easier on the eyes.
I dropped Jim off at his place, then took the truck and trailer home, so didn't actually drive the car home.
I lashed the back of the car down, so I didn't make Jim do it all.
A big Thanks! out to Jim (Wheelhop) for all his help on getting her home.

Car looks good! It was fun coming along. I think this is the 3rd SS Post and and an LS6 that I've helped Rick pick up. I told Rick that if he keeps finding the L78 post cars it's going to dilute the market and make my "2-fuel line" SS postcar worth more.

I knew it was a Real Deal 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan.....as I had the car in my registry. HOWEVER, the owner never did know that it was a real L78 until Rick came to look at it.
I spoke with another Post Sedan enthusiast....that was very surprised on what Rick had discovered....as even with his discussions, the owner gave no indicator that if was an L78.
Rick.....whatever you do, do not pull that horse shoe out of your a$$ <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Does this mean the black car's restoration is now complete, or did you buy this car because it was now available? This looks like a "better" car from s resto standpoint that "Cowboy's" old race car. Congrats on the purchase.

Still have a bit to go to complete the black car. The engine is being lonely <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif sitting on a broken dyno, but should run any day now. The chassis awaits it.
Whenever I see one of these 69 Chevelle SS post sedans, I will try to buy them provided the value is there. You know, typical collector mentality. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/crazy.gif

Yep, time and money is it.
There is a thread for the LS6 somewhere, but that car got stalled all from my fussiness over the replacement carpeting.

Anybody in the Holland, MI area that knows or knew a Russ Jacobs?
Apparently he was a bodyman, and also restored old gas pumps at that time.

Well, my wanted ad in the Holland, MI Craigslist paid off!
I got a call from a couple guys.
One guy is probably a good lead for parts and info on other cars, as he has been messing around with Chevelles for quite awhile.
The second call I got was from Russ Jacobs, who did own this car in 1983.
He remembers buying it in Muskegon, MI
It had SS wheels on it when he bought it, but got a free set of wheels from his work, so that's what you see in this picture. It also looks white, but actually is silver.

Got a lead from the Muskegon ad, and then talked with the owner that bought it in the fall of `79.
He bought it in Martin, MI and said it was lettered with the name of a Chevy dealer from Ravenna, MI.
He will be sending me pics of the way it looked back then.
Now to find the owner from Martin, MI....................

Does your book break out the 4-speed L78's far as M20, M21, and M22?
How about by body style, say for instance the 13427 cars? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif

Just curious, where is the production breakdown for transmission and engine options published?
fsc66
12-26-2015, 02:46 PM
Rick:
The only breakdown in the manner you asked is for total chevelle production of each category nit just for L78's, so the total for 4-spd is broken down by total M21, M22's and I image the balance of the total is for M20's. Same for 3-speeds.
Now under each of the RPO's there is somewhat of a breakdown. The majority of the options are broken by ECL code, at times they list models in addition other times a range, as an example under M20, there are 3 different ECL codes but the lines also list L34,L78 so each line combines the totals for both. Depending on the year, some have more model detail than others but all breakouts are by ECL codes.
Paul
fsc66
12-26-2015, 02:51 PM
The Chevelle is not broken down by model but is broken down by engine and by HP, so it has numbers for how many cars were produced with each engine and by each HP rating.
Paul
fsc66
12-26-2015, 03:00 PM
This information was not published, this was a compilation of reports distributed to select GM Executives and is basically a trends report for all Chevrolet models for various years broken down for the most part by ECL codes but unfortunately does to include usage next to the ECL codes. Here and there models or model ranges are listed next to the ECL codes.
There is no breakdown or listing for COPO RPO's unfortunately.

Rick,
The ID code book has a breakdown of options by ECL codes, production numbers of exterior and interior colors, etc, perhaps I was misinformed about this information.
Paul
Rixls6
12-26-2015, 09:33 PM
It's not laid out how you say, but essentially gives those kind of figures for the RPO's.
It shows for totals in all 69 Chevelle:
15,748 MC1 Heavy Duty 3-speeds.
44,950 M20
13,786 M21
1,276 M22
But they do not break the numbers down further as to how many of each engine trans combo.

I'll check with Dale from Chevellestuff about that ID book, never heard of it but sounds great.
This report dates from about 1958 through 1969 partial year for 1970 and includes all passenger cars. I wonder if that ID book derived from this information.

The owner from Muskegon found a few more pictures of the car the way it looked in `83, and is still looking for the ones from `79 with all the lettering and race stickers.
Here are a few of the 69 Chevelle, and also a couple other cars he owned, one an LS6 that he put a tunnel ram and 660's on and ran 11's.
Also a pic of a 69 Nova that was a 396 car, with a transplanted 454.
He sent me a long letter describing things the best he could remember.

Yes, had a couple body mount bolts snap, or have to be cut off.
If you look closely in the last picture above, you'll see a small square metal tab sticking up on the raised area. We had to cut that on 3 sides to get at the caged nut, then cut the cage, remove the nut with busted bolt, heat the nut cherry-hot, then removed the broken bolt. Put the nut back in the cage after cleaning the threads, and weld the cage shut again.
Other methods may work depending on if the nut spins in the cage or not.

You might try drilling a small hole in the floor above the rusted nuts, and squirting some PB Blaster in a few days before you try loosening. If there is enough bolt left, weld a nut onto it instead of using vise grips.

Should have the body back on the frame by Saturday, then bring it home for some mechanical fixes, then drive the wheels off it this year.
Had several repairs to make where old ladder bar mounts had been, and a crack at a rear body mount that was badly repaired by someone else.
Speaking of wheels, plans are to put some different ones with new tires, as the current set doesn't do the car justice.

They're 15 X 7. Thinking of a 235/60/15 tire size all around. Do you think I'll have any tire-rub problems with that size?
Postsedan

235 is a max front tire with 15's....but greatly depends on the front wheel backspace. I have had 235's rub slightly on the lower front fender lower lip....but I believe that was with 15x8 front wheel.

Checked the wheels and they are 3 3/4 backspace, so maybe I will have to have a tire mounted to do a physical check for clearance.
Car is being readied for some touch up work on the roof where the clear-coat had peeled, so have to paint that area, then clear the whole roof and part of both quarters.

Nice looking Chevelle. I worked for a gentleman who had a large collection of cars. I have been left with the task of selling some of them. One of the cars is a 1969 Chevelle 2dr post. A long time ago I asked my boss if he had the original engine and he said yes. Right now the first thing I am doing is to verify if it is truly an SS car. I have gone through his collection of BBC engines (6 of them) and cannot find one with the partial vin on it. When my boss would paint a car he removed the cowl data plate but had a bad habit of not putting them back on. I found one stack of data plates but the Chevelle one wasn't there. What can I check to verify that this is or is not an SS car? It has the 12 bolt rear end with the back half of the lower control arms boxed in. It also has a single fuel line. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or input.
