Lost for over 30 years! Ken Stoddart's 1969 Z/28 Tran Am Race Car... I found Ken's original 1969 Z/28 in a building in Ohio. The car has it's original title, Dealership Bill of Sale, Protect O' Plate, SCCA build books, cage drawings etc... The car was supposed to be unveiled at the MCACN show last week. Ryan Brutt from Hot Rod & Muscle Car Review came out to the property to help in the rescue of this very unique documented race car. I am locating vintage pictures of the car at various tracks. here are a few pictures of the car in as found condition... Look for a full spread in Muscle Car Review soon.

Hot damn that's cool. For some reason I looked at the first pic and it made me think of Big Red.

When the car was being actively raced it did have JL8 braking package. Somewhere in the mid 1980's someone found out the car had the JL8 option and purchased the rear end for $800.00!!!

POP says it had a BU rear. Maybe JL8 was added after the original order. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif

The JL8 brake package was only available from Feb '69 through May '69 and this car was built after that. It must have had a service package, over-the-counter, 4-wheel disc rear axle.

Was the owner just keeping the car stored away because he knew what the car was, or whats the story on it being stored in a building somewhere not being talked about, I know a lot of car guys that are not on the internet websites.

My guess is that the JL8 rear end that was in the car was an over the counter unit... None of the paperwork I have has anything to support that the car was built as a factory ordered unit.

The previous owner of the car was a "Hoarder" of sorts... He was/is a true car person. He has a piece of property that has well over 20 vehicles on it in all sorts of conditions... He has his Triumph race car that he raced in the 1970's sitting in the weeds next to his house! He was friends with Ken Stoodart. When the car came up for sale sometime in the 1970's he purchased the car and stowed it away in his building... Some local people knew he had the car... The town he lives in wants him to clean up his yard so increasing pressure from them made him consider selling off some of his pride and joy vehicles... I was lucky enough to receive a call from a good friend of mine informing me of the car. Wasting no time I drove out to see the car.. After a few weeks of negotiating I purchased he car... I am not sure at this point if I am going to restore it or pass it on to someone who is looking for a real documented Trans Am Z/28 race car... I am restoring a 1969 Z/28 X77 Daytona Yellow factory M22 car right now... This would be my fourth 1969 Z/28 restoration...

So it was ordered from Martin Chevrolet and sold-delivered thru Ewald? Just wondering how this would happen, and have the Martin paperwork if it was a dealer trade, or why order it for another dealer? Or was this a replacement POP from Ewald...?? What dealer sold this car? Neat car. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

I was wondering the same thing. Also, is Ken Stoddart still alive and, if so, have you made contact with him?

I think the car was a dealer trade? The car had all of its fab work done by a company in Beaverton Michigan called Howe Racing Enterprises Inc. I have the original drawing with welding splatter on them! Maybe the car was delivered to this dealership and then to the fab shop??? I have tried every number I could find to locate Mr. Stoddart... No luck!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2015/12/full-5159-35423-1969_z28_trans_am_title.jpg

So in what years/races did Mr. Stoddard race this car?
MRIROCZ
12-03-2015, 06:09 PM
I am researching that now. Here is a picture of the car published in Competition Press & Autoweek June 19, 1971. This was the car's original paint scheme. Later the car went to red with yellow racing stripes... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2015/12/full-5159-35602-1969_z28_ta_pic._med_size.jpg

I assume you have seen this link. If this is indeed his entire T/A career it would seem he was racing this car just as the heyday of Trans-Am Racing was winding down (Aug. 1971) and the factories pulled out... but that date doesn't square with the pic you have posted above (June 1971). I wonder when he really started...

Regardless, this car would be an awesome build for vintage Trans Am Historic races leading to tons of fun...

Thank you Tracker for your research... I am new at this Trans Am stuff so I am doing as much research as I can on the car.
The "A S" on the fender looks like is for SCCA A Sedan class
he may have run it in A/S and T/A so you may find him in some race results list for SCCA A sedan for some events
