So my buddy dropped the tank in his car....its a 69 Roadster, it has a 6500 redline tach he says..(i didnt look)and has a 3.36 HD rear.and the console says 427 435 and has a small block in it now..was going to be a driver, has standard exhaust and no 427 hood he thought it was just neat convertible to play with... til we saw the tank sticker,,it came with a blown up big block...but he never checked it
so L71 on the sticker..and is an auto car...we havet seen the engine code yet..about 256 L71 auto converts where made..(i didnt even know the turbo was avil) so kinda rare...i think it needs to be restored if the block is the orig to the car.
L71 is visible on the sticker..but what do we do..it aint coming off..its crumbling and most is gone..its kinda weird the only thing you can see is the engine and trans code..theres no way to get the sticker off...its just disappearing as we speak..how do we preserve the integrity and pedigree of the car...its orig gold with black interior and white top..car has been sitting since 1982 and came with a blown up big block... tomorrow hes gonna see what the motor is..it wasnt a big deal til we found the sticker..lol

Unless you car read the VIN on the sticker there is no way to be sure it is for that car.

yes i understand that..but we are sure its the orig to the car and hasnt been monkey'd with..and i also understand they get switched sometimes on the assy line etc...but theres enough proof on the car, it is a very good chance its for the car
really just asking if it was yours what would you do to save it?

I would take a high Def picture of it for my records and put some clear laminate over it so it don't get worse and put the tank back in the car.

As Don said - but get one of the NCRS gurus in your area to come over & examine the car & tank. Take pictures of everything with him present & have him provide a notarized letter of his observations. You'll have to give him a few bucks, but it's obviously important to memorialize the car & sticker before you do anything else.

thanks guys i appreciate the help
it has all the signs..3/8 fuel line no return,HD code rear...the optional performance gear, caps on the half shafts instead of straps..and a few others, theres a date written on the body up under thanks and everything lines up with it..
hes going to look the motor over today etc, and i told him i'd come over and see whats up...
if it where mine, i wouldnt hve been able to sleep and would have figured out about an hour after we figured out the L71 on the sticker...

There is no VIN on a Corvette tank sticker of that era. That's why the removal of the tank from THAT PARTICULAR CAR has to be photo-documented. You now have a loose gas tank that could be from any car.

I would get the NCRS to come witness and document everything and then I would put a new tank in the car. Save the orig tank and sticker in a climate controlled area.

we have pics of it coming out, but wasnt really trying to document anything, except how the lines etc where ran...first clue was 3/8 line, he didnt order those, he ordered them for a small block car, as far as he knew it was a small block bread and butter car...once it was on the lift it all changed..having the car around since 82,,youd think the console plate and tach would have been arousing his curiosity..but its been in deep storage.
his plans where to put new brake and fuel lines on it..go thru the brakes and make it run and drive and torture it with the top down this coming summer then have a light resto......but that all changed pretty quick

Aside from the tank sticker you need to be very careful with all the parts on this car. Many of them will help document this as a 435 car. The under dash harness and ignition harness will be spliced in a way to prove it had transistor ignition. Don't throw the old ones out. If its still the original nose on the car the left front fender skirt will have three holes for the transistor ignition amplifier. The front sway bar will be thicker than a standard small clock. The speedometer gear cluster will have a two letter designation sticker on it and a date stamp proving that it was a 6500 rpm tach and the date it was produced check the tag on the transmission if its still in there it's a very hard to find transmission check to see if it has f41 suspension also small blocks in 69 did not come with f41 suspension. But not all big box had F 41. Only big blocks in 69 had rear sway bars. Look for the original rear sway bar and attaching hardware.
I've had a few customers that have removed the tanks from the cars left the tank sticker on the tank and build a box with a plexi glass top to store the tank in.

I'd call Stan Falenski, he's an NCRS Judge for these years and a walking encyclopedia.

it has the rear sway bar i saw that, and has the 3 holes on the inner fender also...i felt like the front bar was a large one
this weekend we are going to re evaluate his plans and figure out the direction he wants to go in...personally..i feel, getting it the right person that has the means to do the car right is better than half a$$ing it......just a personal thought...but who am i to say what someone should do with their car..has a lot of history and emotional attatchment for him..so we will see
thanks for the help..but please continue to post theories and suggestions...if you have them

extra big block turns out to be a 454 from a later model truck.
decision has been made to make it a hot rod, and will never be for sale anyway...no intentions of restoring it back to stock..he has a lot of history and emotional attachment to the car, and wants it to be a toy..not a museum piece..
thanks for all the help...

Sounds like a great outcome to me. Not all may agree but in my opinion the car being used and enjoyed is the best outcome no matter how it is equipped.
