Who is buying race fuel or higher octane fuels?
What order quantity is best for residential home storage/use?
I have a local oil and fuel distributor but I'd imagine he maybe too local to support the wide spread domestic reach of the community here. Would you guys be interested in a group purchase if I can get this to work?
Let me know,

I talked to a guy today that said his race gas is still 7.50 a gallon.
You need a semi tanker load to get a good deal on fuel. Our big farm savings has been bulk propane. This was the cheapest we ever got this year.

I pay 6.99 a gal. for 110

I get it locally for 7 bucks a gallon, 110 octane, plus I have a connection to get aviation fuel for around $6.50 a gallon which is 100 octane. This is at a local, small airport. The aviation fuel won't go bad if it sits...

Erick warned me about not using aviation fuel when I sent him my last carb

Actually I've been experimenting with 100LL in my Chevelle with positive results so far. If you want to try 100LL I'd say you're safe to do so.
This is a subject I plan on getting into in the near future.
Locally, 100LL prices have pretty much followed along with pump fuel trends.
Interesting. There is a small regional airport right down the street. They have self serve 100ll at $3.99. I am assuming I can't pull the Z/28 up to the pump and start pumping.
Where do you guys get the 100ll, and what are the restrictions on fueling?

You can't pull your car up and fill it up. AV gas has no road tax on it so technically you're not "allowed" to run it on the street. ( <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif )
Bring a couple 5 gallon fuel jugs, tell them it's for your race car and you should be good to go.
Cool. I will give it a shot.
I would imagine the retail mark up on VP fuel where I get it is about 75 cents per gallon. It wouldn't be worth the time and shipping to try to avoid that.

I have been running 100LL for a couple of years now in my "Lawn Mower". I do transport it from the airport back home in the gas tank of my Z/28. I did try a full load in my Turbo Buick at the "Race Track", it ran good but took out the O2 sensor. I since have been cutting it with 93 and have had no further problems at the "Race Track". <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/3gears.gif $4 a gallon this year, was $6 last year.

We have been using the 100LL av gas for a number of years...it has worked great for the small engines [sleds, atv, chainsaws, etc]. I have also used it in the L78 cars...works fine. Some of the stations near us now sell 91 ethanol free...it is a low cost option for the small engines...still need the octane for the cars.

I'd be interested in a couple of barrels! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif ( 55gal )
A gent I worked with some years back, who also had a large car collection, told me that his research on 100LL (Low Lead) Aviation Gasoline revealed that it contained 12 times more lead than our old leaded fuel from the 1970s. I put at least two gallons in my cars when I can to at least keep some lead in the fuel.
The other benefit with aviation gas is a very long shelf life. There is a definite increase in performance with the avgas, even in my 307 Camaro.

That lousy ethanol is a real problem also in these old cars... If you can find higher octane gas ethanol free that will really help..
Rich
That is why we chose to 9.3:1 compression on that 302 for my Dad's Nova. We might see 15% ethanol in a few years.
Pump gas motors are nice!

This is great stuff guys... I have some homework to do.
Thanks,

Mixing aviation gas with pump gas will work well. We have no ethanol free pump gas where I live, though.

Tim, is it a problem to mix 100LL with ethanol pump gas?

You can mix it no problem.

Thanks Eric. What is your preferred % mix?
Also, is this acceptable to use in a modern crate GM motor without risking damage?
Thanks,
Dan

Dan;
Anywhere from 25-50% mix (av.gas/pump gas) with premium pump unleaded should suffice for 98% of applications. I'm currently testing with straight 100LL but will be switching to straight 93 for further testing next year to see what % of a mix is required (if any) to keep the 496 happy.

On my stock L72 engine i was mixing 50 50 101 low lead with 93 and it ran great for the longest time. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

We have a local airport that sells the 100 avgas. You just carry your can(s) to the pump, put in your credit card and fill away. No one mans the pump. Since it is on the edge of the runway, you can't drive your car or truck up to it but have to park a few yards away on the driveway.
The only problem I ever had, was being there at the wrong time a few months back. A student pilot was taxiing a little bi-plane to the parking area and cut the corner too sharp. His wing tip hit the main rotor stand on a Raven helicopter parked in the lot. No injuries other than BIG wallet damage. Luckily there were dozens of other witnesses so I didn't have to stick around.

I agree that a pump gas motor is the way to go. My motor is 10.48:1 with the timing set any anywhere from 35* to 38* and runs great on super unleaded which is usually 93 with ethanol and 91 without.
Some of the guys run out to the local airport and run 100LL but not too many. Otherwise they will run 110 but it's $6.99 a gallon which is crazy <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/no.gif .....and I don't understand it since gas is $1.85 a gallon here. I would think race gas would start dropping but it's been that price for a few years now!Kurt

I remember being warned about using 100% aviation fuel and the possibility of eating up your fuel pump because of lack of lubrication if you put on a lot of miles, and less concern for the 1/4 mile use

NovaBoy and I run the Sunoco 112 with 93 octane. I run a couple gallons of the `112 with about 10 gallons of 93. Seems easier to start to.
Turns out the local airport has a self serve 100ll, and it is open 24 hours, even when no one is there!!!!
