I need to have some small touch up work done on a 26k survivor L78 (endura bumper paint cracking). I decided to take stuff further apart just to clean everything up really well. The fender extensions each have a white "6" marked on the inside of them. Any idea what these were for? I'm just curious as I can't recall seeing them mentioned. Thanks!

The fenders were pierced for badging by Chevrolet. Box 103 on the BBC has a code for it. There was some worker shorthand on the line; COPO extensions are often marked 427 M.
In your case a 6 could indicate 396 badging.

Best guess, Motor. Otherwise easily confused with the unit sequence number, also 3 digits.

OK, makes sense. I guessed at one time it was for Muncie.

It is my experience that the "6" is short hand for 396...BKH

What about "M" for M40?

I figured that would be too easy
Any insight from Phil during his Echos of Norwood research?

Probably not, since it could also be interpreted as M20/M21 (whichever was used).
Also - the fender guy doesn't really need to know the transmission type, since there was not an emblem installed on the fender to denote such or any kind of packaging to accommodate. So no "heads up" markings would be required.

From what I understand these are instructions for piercing fenders for trim and emblems...
These are the codes I have seen personally...
427 M is COPO Style Trim
G R is Z28 Rally Sport
G M Z28 Style trim
427 R is COPO Rallysport
FWIW the engine RPO code on the body broadcast for the Z28 is G.
