There is one of those "infamous" valve stem caps Brent-Min.

I think Dave was asking if the original L79 engine survives.

BIG congrats Brent also friggin' W<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/headbang.gifW!!!
Especially cool if you've been chasing it for years but man what a sinister and potent piece!
Best of luck backtracking to the original L79 lump as finding it would sure help w/ the keeping/separating the L88 from the car conundrum being engine alone could be appreciated and worth 'too much' to a real '69 L88 guy missing their original?
Congrats again and best if luck w/ everything also looking forward to what you top this with in 2016!

Note how the factory cleaned the parting lines of that cylinder head. They used big snag grinders in production shops.

Is this a factory over the counter motor I don't see a vin on the side and how do you read the date codes on the heads thanks to everyone for the good words

I would think that is an OTC L88. The head have their date codes on the bottom side, so you will have to pull the intake and look underneath with a mirror.
Very cool find on this car!

----Brent,,,Theres a 69 L88 Corvette owner somewhere out there that wants that motor,,,probably badly! Casting date for the block should be on the bellhousing flange opposite the casting # (pass side). Give us that and I may be able to find a buyer if you want. "LO" is an acceptable stamp for an L88 Corvette in my books, but its showing that as "no transistor ignition" and all 69 L88 Corvettes had to have TI on the order form! Not sure I understand that part.......Bill S

Bill's right on as being a Vinless but complete Suffix production style engine, it's perfect place is w/ a real L88 chassis also true enthusiast who's willing to buck up for genuine original stuff like this.
Stamping looks good against one I compared to from this same month June of '69, the zero's and Ohhh's also flat back sixes all appear exactly correct plus the wide spacing between L & O etc.
Not sure about the TI being on orders as Bill mentioned but of note & to confuse the issue further, the 67-68 L88 Suffix was IT also possibly some early 69's too then the '69 LO Suffix as this example.
Again as previously, being such a cool car it's a shame to separate it from the car if engine value too high so really hoping the original L79 can be found to help you feel better about splitting them up.
What distributor does it have?
Again awesome score!!!

My outlook is to leave the L88 in the car that's what makes it so fricken cool and I will still look for the L79 but not going to loose any sleep over it rather have the L88 in it.Going to clean and put the chrome back on it and don't rattle can a thing let the paint stay chip up and leave the hub caps on it <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/3gears.gif

I see a possible vin#, but how can you read it. I see a zero, and it goes at an angle. Maybe if someone has a commercial photo shop that could filter it readable.

Geez, that is a heck of a cool car. I'd leave the L88 in it and have fun.
