View Full Version : A/M Headers flange

I'm looking at this set of used ceramic coated Hedman headers for cheap. They have the p/s box dent in them and another dent at #2 cyl, but otherwise are real nice.
My question is, has anyone seen the round collector flange? I'm used to seeing the triangle 3 bolt one that bolts to my exhaust.
I figured for $100 you can't go wrong, but if the flange is that different I don't know if they'd work. They're 1 1/2 hr drive so I won't know until I actually see them.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Dave -- I wouldn't think tet round collector would pose a problem. The collector is probably 3 or 3.5 inches and three or four bolts. The sealing surface must is still inside the collector mounting bolt holes. TAZ

So as long as I can pull the two sides together on a header gasket I should be good to go. That makes sense. So you think $100 is worth it? Seems like it. Dents are pretty easy to get out.

The only issue I see here is after scanning through various Hedman Headers I do not see any with this style of collector. Ask whoever has these for sale to give you the Hedman part number -- sometimes stamped into the flange.

I picked them up last night. They're Hedmans # 65001. That means they're 2" primaries which is really too big for my motor, but I don't think it'll make that much of a difference on a street motor though. It should just move the torque up higher into the RPMS. Hedman says they're good for 396 up regardless of HP/Tq. It looks like someone might have welded a turbo flange on it for the collector flange or something. The 65001 come uncoated, so someone had these done after they were bought. I might convert them to the standard 3 bolt style or just fix the dent and flip them. We'll see. Except for the dent, they're in excellent condition.

OK -- that explains the flange issue ... they look pretty good. TAZ

I'd get some lead pack gaskets and make a 4 bolt flange for the exhaust.

I decided that's the route I'll take. If it is a turbo flange like I think it is, gaskets should be pretty easy to source.
I just matched up the headers to my set up. I don't know why they're dented where they are. Its no where near the PS box. Might have hit something or clearanced them them for a custom rack and pinion maybe.

You could also use a ball flange, requires no gasket.

Would that bolt up to the header flange on mine or would you need to weld a new flange on?
edit: Looking at the price of a flange and two turbo gaskets, I might just convert it back to a 3 bolt. I'm seeing $22/gasket and $28 for a flange. Uh, no....

I think something like this welded on the exhaust will work if I can find something with the same bolt spread.

or cut off and go to band clamps
I've never seen the collector flanges that thick either?

Ya, they're crazy thick. Never have to worry about them warping... I found turbo flanges that are the same diameter and thickness for $10 each. The holes don't line up though, so I'll have to drill new holes. No problem. I think mine are Lake style flanges, but I couldn't find them anywhere.
