Will probably need to put up some pics of both, stamp (G9 9) to see where it is located and oil filter area of block to determine if 2 or 4 bolt.
Looks like it was assembled on March 18th. The G 9 9 where is this stamped? Generally, G would indicate July and 1st 9= day of month and other 9= year. But without seeing, it is impossible to say at this point.

Are you sure the casting number is not ....854???
If so, this block was produced in both 2 bolt and 4 bolt main depending on the use.

Number is 854 Wilma.. I have it noted that G9 9 is on rear of block deck. Near oil filter mount is Hi Perf Pass
Under timing cover is a G7 ..
Ledge where starter bolts up to is a T 089 . Do not remember if this is 'scrawled' or punched.
Will have to wait to see oil filter area, maybe a month or two. What am I looking for here exactly?
Again, I will get back as soon as I can on the above 854 CE block.
Thanks for the help!

</div></div>G 9 9 is a date code. July 9, 1969. So it's a 69 cast block. The "TO318" is actually "T0318." Zero, not O. Stands for Tonowanda built March 18. More than likely your "6" should be an "8" for your "9654". I'd double check your stamp pad. March is way too far out for a July block. Might be normal for a CE block though? I don't know. Maybe post some pics?
Does it look like the below pic? Big block 402?

Thanks for the reply Sgt Hawk. I have pics (couple) of this block, but, I need an E-mail address to send 'em to.
If you could help and then post them on to the Board, I will envoy the photos later..

I just got your email. Here you go Ted. Sure looks like the T0318 ET is re-stamped to me, but I don't have a lot of experience with CE blocks.

That is a restamp without a doubt. The CE block assembly code is located on the starter pad and this one is T089 as seen in the pic. Aug 1969 is when it was assembled and the block was cast July 9 1969. make sure you check the bore since the 854 block was used for the 402 vs 396 in 70. Some late 69 854 blocks were bored to 396 and in 70 they received the C proceeding the engine suffix code indicating that they were the 2nd design 400 CID engine (402), pic attached of the note from a parts manual about the pistons.

</div></div>The "C" prefix hit the 69 Camaros for August 69 bodies. Any "C" prefix is a 402. My born with motor was cast on July 23, 69 and assembled July 28th for a August 22 body.

Makes one wonder if that T0318 E(T?) was put there by the owner or dealer upon replacing with this engine? That assembly date and so forth might have been on the old engine (original) and the owner felt inclined to or believed those numbers needed to be transferred to this engine? EI is a 67 396 Camaro, ET is a 67-68 Chevelle #.

That stamping definitely looks 'home brewed' and the theory described above makes sense. As for time from casting to assembly...while 3-4 months or less may be the norm...I have seen 69 cast #854 blocks with late June/70 assembly dates.
Did we ever figure out the 4 bolt vs. 2 bolt question?
wilma
Good evening!
Can't get to the block for a month or two. At that point I will take pics near the oil filter housing. That should tell us what the block had, either 2 or four bolt mains.
Kinda leaning towards the owner or dealer replacing the engine and thus the ET suffix coding scrawl.
Thanks for the responses and help from Sgt.Hawk
I'll get back ..
