I just saw a post about the headlight delay system on the 70 Chevys that I never had seen or knew existed. And that AC collection with the OS traction option...wow.. I parted over 200 early camaros and Chevelles back in the day and thought Ive seen it all. I know there are so many more rare..obscure..NOS...even prototype parts out there that I have never seen. I thought I'd make a post just for that reason.... how about it guys... I'll post a few of mine in the next couple days..

Great topic as there are possibly a lot of neat parts out there.
The only thing I can offer are photos of a customer's 1970 Pilot Chevelle interior. It was the 42nd car built on the pilot line and had vinyl wrapped over metal rear seat arm rests compared to the assembly line plastic ones. They had the part numbers written in marker on the back of them. These prototype panels are part number 8799609 compared to 9806311 for the assembly line plastic one. This car is full of unique parts and markings, most of which are marked with "PILOT" on them in yellow tape. The front door inner frames and the trunk lid are different than assembly line pieces.

I also had 2 sets of rare liquid tire chain option, 69 only from what I hear, this set up used a red under dash button that would sprayed a chemical from canisters mounted on the rear inner fender wells in the trunk, if you got on ice and tires spinning, this was suppose to make traction. 2 of my donor cars, used in restore of my 69 convertible, both had this option(what are the odds of that!) These were put up for auction on fee-bay back (before our economy went bad)and brought stupid money. Can you imaging filling canisters with bleach and spraying tops of you tires at a red light and do a smokey fr^&*g burnout down town. cool stuff in 69
if you do a google search you can read and see pictures of this

Chad's post reminded me of a console I used to own for a 68 Impala. The top plate was black and blank with NO hole or provisions for an automatic or manual shifter. I had never heard of being able to order bucket seats with a console but column shift until then. I sold that for stupid money some time back in the early 90's.

Sorry to blow that fable, but no '62 SS ever had a console on the floor unless it was a 4-speed. All '62 Super Sports DID have the seat separator storage box though.

Here is an aluminum SB waterpump (cast 3 20 65) that I found on a 283, that was used as a starter for a diesel engine in a tank. Itīs strange they didnīt use these in Corvettes or other cars to save weight. Were they not reliable maybe ?

Here's another super rare '09 piece. There were plenty of '62 380hp (1x4) engines built but very few original aircleaners survive. Of the few air cleaners that are out there, virtually none of them still have their original screen for the oil soaked foam element. Parts stores sold a paper replacement element so the screens got tossed.

I've got a NOS 68 Impala hidden headlight door, with the vertical bars blacked out.
My dad once had a Z11 aluminum water pump that he found at Carlisle. This was at least 30 years ago. Had the 0 at the start of the part number. He ended up trading it for a bunch of 65 409 parts. Boy, does he wish he still had it!

haha I asked him what he got in trade, 65 409: 3 NOS oil pans, distributor, exhaust manifolds and more. He says the guy wanted it pretty badly.
Verne would the 409+2x4 be about equivalent in performance to a stock L-78 or L-72. Just wonderin

I experienced a direct comparison with both a stock 2x4 409 and a stock L-78 in the same car with exactly the same set-up on the car. The ONLY difference was the L-78 ran a flex fan; the 409 ran the stock clutch fan. I had no problem shifting the L-78 at 6500 but I was more careful with the 409. 5800 shifts.

Cool. I always wondered about this. Why only 5800 rpm with the 409? Were they fragile, or did they just stop making power up top?

No more than an L-78 as far as I know. Both engines had push rods that were not lined up with the centerline of the lifter.

I have a 62 bubbletop with 409/409. It is all stock except I am running 2 1/2 inch exhaust instead of 2 1/4 inch exhaust out past the rear wheels.
I ran the car at the Nostalgia drags at Pacific Raceways back in 2002 and it ran a best of 13.54 @ 106mph with slicks on it. My best times were achieved by launching at around 3800 rpm. I was running no air cleaner and 110 octane leaded fuel. Launching at under 3800 rpm, the car would hook up great but would bog down for a half second before taking off. I would shift that little spaghetti stick shifter at around 6000 rpm as it all started to fall away above 6000 rpm. Not sure if my timing wasn't advanced enough or the fuel pump couldn't keep up or what, but it seemed to just really fall away above 6000 rpm so I just shifted for the next gear. Car was a 4.11 posi so I was going through the traps around 5000 rpm or so if I remember right. Was a lot of fun as the car really seemed to pull like hell in the top of 2nd and 3rd gear. I went for another run hoping to get an even better time by launching around 4200 rpm and when I dumped the clutch, the car just sat there! Snapped an axle off right inside the pumpkin. Oh well, was a great effort!
Another note, I ran the car at another nostalgia race at Bremerton Raceway about the same time 2001 or 2002. I was lined up against a Camaro, but there was a black 406 tripower '62 Ford a few cars back so the starting officials pulled him out of line and up next to me and the announcers made a big deal of this '62 versus '62 shootout. Well, it wasn't much of a shoot out as I jumped him at the tree and put him away by probably 6 or more car lengths!
Lots of fun and haven't run the car since, other than leaving occasional black stripes on the street with the 8.00 x 14 Silvertowns.

Sounds like we both had fun Paul. I launched at 4000 with a wide ratio box, 4.56s and slicks. Went through the traps at 5700. I was embarrassed one time with a sheared axle at the line, then I started scribing a line down the length of the axles and checking them after each weekend. When they twisted 1/2 way around, I'd change them out for another fresh pair. Threw a lot of them away but never broke another one. They served me well as my launch shock absorbers.

Thanks. My Uncle (Mom's brother) had a 425/409 in a ermine white, white interior '64 SS back in 1966-1968. He said he used to almost bury the stock (likely inaccurate) 7000 rpm tach when powershifting on the street. He said he tore through 7 or 8 rear ends, but the '09 never broke. He ultimately sold the '09 and swapped the engine for a 195hp 283 so he could get better gas mielage on the daily commute and go class racing in 1969 without constantly breaking parts. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/eek.gif
He never had the '09 to the track, just street raced it. According to him, even in the late-60s, the 425hp '09 still was a fast car. He said he only would lose to 440 mopars and 427 vettes. He claims most GTOs and SS396s were no problem.

Mike,
Look at how close the upper hole is to the rim of the head. A fully captured hole might have interfered with the valve cover. The slotted holes are reminiscent of the 409 for the same reason.

Here is my Zero dash(0-)experimental dual plane hi rise Z28 302 intake. Notice the lack of firing order, production casting number, cylinder numbers, and 3 hole carb. pad. The date corresponds to the time period when the Z28 package was in it's infancy. I believe this to be the missing link, between the Corvette/Nova/Chevelle 327 intakes with their medium riser squared runner design, and the #610(and the later 69-72 LT-1/Z28)design.

Nothing better than NOS 1970 Chevelle Interior pieces.
These are Bucket seat inserts from Bead to Bead with GM part numbers on the back.
My former LS6 car had one inserted on the bottom of an original bucket seat that had a tear in it. I dyed the Tan one into Black and it has been in the car for over 10 years with no issue what's so ever.
I have a few of these that I will post for sale soon right here in sYc by the piece for the first time ever instead of sets.
One photo shows a dyed test half and half sample which I did 6 years ago just using the SEM cleaner with SEM black Dye. I have bent it scratched it and so on and the SEM dye stays perfectly nice.
Hey Dan
I installed a set of dark green inserts in my tire old orig buckets
found the orig dark green Material and had them redone to orig specs.
I Have a whole roll of dark green material which I purchased just to have
it on hand.
You most def can purchase the material for any collour from a reputable seat restorer.
The diff of orig seats and repro seat covers is huge. I GRADE cheese on the diamond pattern on my orig seat inserts

Though Rick is right and all the different literature will back this up, oddly enough there are two things I have NEVER found on an LS6, that radio ground or the valve cover to firewall grounds. 396 cars, yes. LS6's? Never. Don't know why just stating what I have found. Engine size should have NOTHING to do with either one of those but evidently it does.

I oferd the owner the complete Electro-tip parts. HE DECLINED.
I cant imagine the owner of this restored chevelle refusing to reinstall this

Someone at GM put that paint on there.. I 'think' these were the first forms, of the double hump heads, that we all came to love on 283s and 327s...not sure, but I think so. The first 461x heads. You did not see another aluminum head on a chevy until 67, and it was a big block. Note on the last picture, how GM tech milled out the valve seats on one cylinder so you could not use again. Easily repaired today.

I think a few of them (2?) made it out the door is what I read once. I also heard a small amount made it out (11 seems right) and they got them back on a recall, but some did not make it back as many vettes got stolen back in the day. In an case, they it was very low numbers. The guy with the aluminum heads would be the best source for all of this.

Do we know why they abandoned the aluminum head program in 1960? What issues were they having?
It would be interesting to get these on a flow bench and see if they are actually any different than 461 heads.

That's a great question. What I do believe they did hit the 315HP target mark on a 60 283 fuelie (same rating as 1961 with cast iron 461x heads), as I do believe all they were going for was endurance testing verification. I read they had water passage cracking issues, warping, no steel valve guides, etc. Not exactly reliable. The metallurgy of the heads just were off, and that killed them.
I read somewhere, the new head gasket technology that exists today (o-ring), may solve the issues some of these early heads would have had.

I'll try to give you the short version of the aluminum head story so I don't end up rambling. Both of the '60 FI engines were to have aluminum heads with 1.94" intake valves and higher hp ratings. They were advertised and even people ordered cars thinking they were getting the heads. Never happened. They cracked between the valve seats and some even cracked during initial torquing. The '59 FI engines rated at 250 and 290 hp were carried over to '60 and the "Advertised Maximun Engine Performance" chart was revised in June 1960 to show this. There were only a few engines built at Flint with aluminum heads and they were sent to Warren Tech Center for testing.
There were no Corvettes delivered with aluminum heads by the St. Louis plant. The rumors of cars being recalled because of aluminum heads cracking are false and just rumors. Since there were no heads delivered there were none to recall so there is no service bullitin relating to this subject. This is varified by a letter from Joe Pike (Chevrolet Asst National Sales Promotion Mgr. and later Corvette News editor, from where most of us knew Joe) dated August 1961 stating that "There were no 1960 or 1961 Corvettes produced with aluminum cylinder heads." The letter further states the use of the '59 engines in the '60 FI car and the new 315 hp engine in the '61. This '61 engine had an iron version of the aluminum head with the double hump marking on the end.
You will see some of the alum heads in private hands as they were cast by Chevrolet and other sources including Alcoa in the mid '60s for use in an Indy engine project. All seem to have the '59 casting dates that were in the molds. I don't feel that these heads would be good for anything except a display novelty. They would crack if you tried to use them and they wouldn't be correct on a restoration...

I just read that, and would have to agree. But then, checking just now, on corvette forum, a cheetah has been using those 59 heads, and a 57 vette race car has them. The cheetah guy said they are fine. So the comment in that text about 'they will crack' is not exactly 100% true.
For what its worth, I got my heads with my 60 corvette fuelie big brake. I have NO NO NO claims they belong to my car, and consider them a novelty. My car's production was not early to be valid (more like early mid year). The car was raced as part of a chevy dealer in detroit for 2 yrs, and then it went to the main holley guy inside the chevy plant, who continued to race it. Those heads came out of the detroit local area, that's about all I believe. I don't think all of these heads for indy cars would have had old orange paint on them. That paint was on there, before they were made purposely inoperable. Hard to explain. Either owner #1, got them from his dealership on another car's recall, or the second owner got them out of the tech center, where he had access to almost everything (he was close to Vince P). For me, its the mystery of the paint on them, that makes these a great conversation piece on a part that is not worth anything really.

I met a guy at Spring Carlisle and he is telling me a story about 4 hoods he bought, at first I am thinking this is just another story you hear about but then he mention's where and how he acquired the hoods. I was able to buy this original GM X-Ram hood last weekend.

Thank's Rick, I also got pics of an original hood from Jon Mello and others before I bought this. The only difference I see is my hood does not have the holes drilled for hood pins and I do not see any signs that this hood has ever been bolted on a car.

I have a set of chevy sm block aluminum heads dated 1963...(if I recall correctly)....probably rarer than these...I'll try and dig them out to post a few pics
Also I think I read that Mickey Thompson used or was involved w these 59 dated heads

Bought one of those brand stinken new back in about 1965 or 66 for my 57 150 sedan. Part number on the box was CC 55-57 M. Came with the correct Muncie linkage instead of having to go thru the hassle of swapping out the B/W linkage. Loved that shifter. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/worship.gif
