We've decided to go with a new set of black coated headers for Benjamin's Nova, would like to install something that looks vintage '69'ish. What brand fits the look and installs the easiest?

Tough to beat Hookers $188..most people would never know what is vintage or not.

Do you have power steering on Ben's car?

No p/s, but manual transmission.

Regardless of the Headers, have them coated by Calico. Their work is top notch and gives the headers a true vintage look. They age with grace too. After 3 years on my Z, they look like vintage gold.

I do my own coatings using Cerakote Coatings.

Here is the website. They dont have a ton of colors but if you go to their firearms website then they have more.. I have looked at several of those data sheets and it claims 1200 heat resistant but I do not have first hand experience with it. If someone wants to they can send me their part and pay to have it blasted or already have it done and cover the cost of the coating Ill do it for free for the next month or so and you let me keep whats left of the liquid. I only use air cure due to not having an oven for just this process but that could change. Just pm me if interested. You can also try for yourself just use a HPLV gun and I run roughly 20-30psi on the gun. Just practice. A lot. A 4oz tester sample will do quite a bit but I would get a pint if you want to do headers.

Ive also used their piston thermal coat and micro slick coating.

When painting headers yourself, I learned many years ago the hard way. My first experience, I am sure many of you have had this happen, I would use VHT paint and after the first start-up, the paint would start to peel almost instantly. I learned this trick from a friend of mine, I use a hand torch and heat up the header from the inside and then apply the paint. I never had a problem after this.

I used the cheap Hookers on my Malibu. Was not looking to spent stupid money for a set, and I hate shiny headers. Car has PS and they fit well.
I removed the black paint on them, gave the metal some tooth, etched with phosphoric acid and paint with VHT, so far so good.

Thanks all, especially for the suggestions in keeping the VHT on the headers. Benjamin and I will use one of these methods on these:

Heating the part will expand and open the molecules, then when cooling it shrinks and pulls on the paint to hold it with in the metal.

Darrel, does the coating company offer white?
cook_dw
03-27-2016, 12:26 PM
Not under their high temp side but on the firearms side they do. Under the specs for one of the whites it states: C-140 Bright White is formulated to withstand elevated temperatures (~800°F) without discoloring. This makes the coating ideal for components for high- temperature systems. so I would think it would work on exhaust but I have not tried it yet but I want to. I've gotten several samples from them and I like the look of the Bright White.

Headers get over 1000 deg F consistently.
