View Full Version : Wall of Shame

I don't think a thread has ever been started for something like this.

I see things all the time when working on cars, disassembling engines, and even working on my house that really make me scratch my head.

I thought it would be fun to start a thread that shows all the FUBARed parts we come across. It could be due to a mechanical hack job, explosion, bad body work, or simply a good idea gone bad. If it was something done by your own hand and you are embarrassed, you can always blame it on someone else <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif . Help us decorate the Yenko.net Wall of Shame!

I'll get this started.

I recently bought a 1966 427/425HP engine out of a 1966 flat bottom boat. I found this pan in the garage of the house. It was the same color as the engine and is a 1966 pan. It was definitely on the engine and used at some point. This is 2 pans very crudely attached to each other.

This was posted recently on another forum. This is an example of how NOT to raise your X-frame car. The body mount bolts are the only things holding up the entire chassis! This was a professional shop that did this. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

It appears that this Camaro body was lifted buy a chain or cable passed through the inside of the roof and bearing on the upper roof rail channel The SS trim was crushed on this car, There was a vinyl top so the damage was mostly hidden. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/sick.gif

This is the top of a RH 69 Camaro 1/4 panel (a parts car I had). Pic. taken from the rear looking fwd. Someone put on one of those cheap 1/2 quarter patch panels so prevalent in the 80s. They beat down the top of the original quarter and made a trough and then brazed and welded a bead down the center. The trough made a good place to lay on the mud heavy! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/03/full-13059-41430-nikon_1_1691.jpg

What was supposed to be a freshly rebuilt engine with everything new except the timing chain that broke right before the 66 Fairlane was pushed across the auction block. I bought it, got it running but didn't trust it. This is what was in the engine.

These pictures were from when my friend was playing around with the distributor and I was pumping the gas pedal. When all of a sudden there was a huge backfire through the carb and it blew the valve covers off. I waited until payday, bought &amp; installed new valve covers and it fired right up.

They're on upside down because I just threw them on as I was disgusted.

Mecum put me in touch with the seller who apologized and said it was all new except for the broken chain. He sent me a new chain and a service manual. It was later when I tore it down and found all the garbage parts, Reath crank that had been drilled and welded, ancient Mickey Thompson aluminum rods, pistons that had been dropped and then ground down, junk valves...Purely a engine thrown together for a auction.

I don't get taken too often, but I bought this '63 300hp 327 from an infamous collector/restorer. HE said it was outside for one winter but covered up and should be fine inside. All the head bolts were finger tight and this is what I found when I took it apart. #7 piston and rod were missing. I still haven't gotten the pistons to move, and it's been soaking for months with a lot of banging.

I had a similar experience. Bought an engine from a &quot;reputable&quot; seller via the Internet, claimed to have only been run a short time, his friend wanted a milder engine, etc., etc. I buy it and it sat as you see it for a few years. I finally let my buddy tear it down and he uncovered all manner of mayhem. Crank was 10-10 (not mentioned) and scored, heads were junk and suffered a gasket failure, heads milled (not mentioned) too much (note valve seats) and couldn't be saved, rocker arms moved off valve stems and damaged the retainers on several valves. Block is being saved and my buddy had the crank polished. I've known my buddy since high school and he is a great guy so I let him have the whole mess for free. He sent me one of the junk alloy heads and he kept the other for desk art in his office. I'll hang mine on the wall in my garage as a memory of how stupid I was to believe what the seller claimed.

Staying with the latest theme of broken engines, this one was a fresh rebuild that broke at the track on the first run. Never did figure out what caused the carnage, but a guess would be hydro-lock.

Verne, would an old fashioned caustic hot tanking melt the original pistons out of the bores?

I don't know Steve. I've even thought about our old friend Evap-o-rust. I had planned to take it to a local engine builder but he doesn't have the caustic tank. I'd really love to save the block.

Verne, would an old fashioned caustic hot tanking melt the original pistons out of the bores?</div></div>

If all you want to save is the block -- use a &quot;blue flame&quot; wrench and very carefully (stay clear of walls) cut through the top of piston ... trim excess to relieve pressure. You should be able to knock the rest out. TAZ

TAZ,right now the block has been moved to a wood shed (wood floor) so I'd reluctant to use the hot wrench.

Put down the hammer. LYE.....

Same thing as used in old time hot tanks. Lye eats aluminum but never even bothers cast iron. A 55 gallon blue barrel with the top cut off, then fill with Chevy small block, water and lye that you can buy from Amazon or your local big box hardware store. Amazon is cheaper though, and has it in bulk. You can leave the block in that barrel for a month or more outside and let the sun light heat up the barrel to make the lye work faster.

Thanks John,
I might try the lye trick but in a modified form.

This isn't brain science.

Try Rogers Speed Shop in Garwood NJ. That's the old fashioned machine shop that does all my work. I think they have access to an old style hot tank. Also, try the Bontempo Brothers Speed Shop in Linden, NJ - they dipped the rear axle housing for my Trans Am several years ago.

Thanks for the leads Steve. I'm familiar with the Bontempos.

My '55 Chevy came to me largely untouched since the 1970s, right down to the 14&quot; slots and Torque Twister meats. The seats were early Camaro mounted on 2x4s! A little too &quot;old school.&quot; A hard-core old rod/custom buddy said don't you dare change that so the wood stayed. (I had everything from the flywheel aft updated to new parts so the Super Shifter III was my addition.)

ive saved motors like that 327 i get lots of boat motors and they always look like that and only 1 thing works..if it can be saved...seafoam deep creep...2 cans soak and try to spin in one direction by using the flywheel side..takes about 2 weeks..but it will bust it loose..take it easy or it will crack the cylinder....ive done it maybe 50 times and only 1 time it didnt work..i busted the cylinder getting in a hurry..it takes about 2 weeks..spray soak turn...if it moves any after the first 2 soaks..its gonna come loose..i spray most of it from the crank side..and everyday i vac out the cylinder of junk and flakes and spray it til theres a puddle

i remove the timing chain and pull everything i can
