Sometimes cars come along that ignite your soul like a match to a can of denatured alcohol. Why denatured? No reason, except that I went to college and figured I better use some of those words I learned (pronounced...LERR-Ned <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif ) Anywho, I'm into the restoration of my A12 Super Bee, affectionately called "The Beater Bee" by the previous owner, and figured I'd better start a thread to show some much needed progress. With the MCACN show looming on the horizon, and several projects that popped up over the recent months, I was forced to delay my unveiling of the Beater Bee until next year's show. I know, I know. Bob was so distraught over this that he almost wasn't going to have the show this year. I told him to buck-up, stop sniveling, and put on the show anyway! After some persuasion, he agreed, so rest easy: MCACN 2016 is on! Whether or not any of that actually happened is speculatory at best. And since speculatory isn't even a word, then I'm pretty sure that previous conversation didn't happen at all. Actually, it went more like this:

Bob: {rrrriiinnng} "Hello?"
Me: "Hi Bob, Dave here. I don't think I can make the show this year. I've had a lot come up like plate tectonics, the Coriolis effect, and did you know the Moon is actually moving away from the Earth at about 1.5 inches per year???? With all that going on, I am too busy to get my car done in time. Can I do it next year? Thanks Bob, <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/worship.gif you're one of the good ones <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif ....{click}"
Bob: "Hello?" <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif

So, with that, the countdown is on for next year's show!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif To start from the beginning, I was after this car for 3yrs. After many subliminal emails to the owner making small talk and such, finally, my badgering paid off. Hey, how do you think I got Kelly to be my wife!? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/whistle.gif Sometimes the squeaky oil gets the wheel....er, something like that. So here she is and the first "touch"...

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/04/full-18993-42013-img_4130.jpg

Oh course, what does one do with such an iconic icon of the Muscle Car era? Well, here's what you do!

Phil: {rrring} "Hello?"
Me: "Hey Phil, Dave. Long time no talk man! How's things? How's Lori? Been flying much? Hey, I bought my Dream Bee and wondered if maybe you'd like to bring your COPO to the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in Chicago this year? Ever hear of it? Probably not. Small, local show. Anyrate, I haven't seen you in 13yrs since we were laid off from TWA, and thought what a fitting reunion!<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif I'll see you there. I'm sure you'll get the time off. Thanks Phil! You're one of the good ones <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/worship.gif....{click}"
Phil: "Hello?!?" <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif

Actually, the whole thing was in reverse order. Woj contacted me and told me about the show, and a call to Reliable set the transport up after Bob and Ryan agreed to have the car in the Barn Find section at the 2015 show. Here's the Pics from that!
<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Here's my Bee at the set up area for the Barn Find section of MCACN 2015. The cool thing is the COPO right above the hood scoop is Woj's! Had to take another angle on that while the show wasn't fully set up. Really a neat pic!<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/04/full-18993-42019-aaaaaaa.jpg
Me and my lovely wife Kelly next to the Bee! That was taken by Marc Rozman, who we met at the show. So many nice people!!!

I love this image, and call it, "Bee Blurr". Kelly took this as I was driving away headed for Reliable. Something about that just sums up the whole show in one picture: As the show ends, stands come down, seats get folded up, cars fire up, Big Rigs pull in awaiting to gobble up acres of iconic juggernauts, and amidst all that flurry, your car and you stay in focus the entire time. Oh man, that's pretty deep....<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

Next up was to have the original owner out to see the car and hear the stories. Of course, Kodak stock jumped after my purchase of as many memory sticks as I could to capture the moment! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif Gary was just ticked to death to see the car. Him sitting in it for the first time was just priceless.

Just like the Bee Blurr photo, this one is pretty intriguing too. I look at this photo and wonder what Gary is thinking about. Just a cool pic capturing a unique moment with man and machine. Sadly, Gary passed away unexpectedly and won't be there to install that aircleaner in 2017 with me:( But the good news is his Son will fill in his spot!<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

So, fast forward a few months and it's on, like Donkey Kong!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif Somebody said that once to me and I knew he was serious, so now's it's stuck in my vocabule..vocab...vo..my words <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif. So, step one, tear the car down and document everything. I found so many cool things with this car. It's only got 53,000 miles but it was a Michigan car, so it's got some rust. But, a few bolts, and it's down the unibody!!

This is the part of the hobby that keeps me going. The snapshots of the past that these cars all carry with them. The fact that the original owner got to see his car one more time before his passing and that his son will be involved. It's like counting the rings of a tree. Good luck with her .. it seems you are up for the task of bringing that bee back to life

The link to the Original Owner is what makes the whole car, RIP :-(

So special that he was able to reconnect before passing on:-)

The shiny metal is great but the history is what it is all about!!!

Keep us in the loop as the restoration continues:-)

Thanks guys! I appreciate the well-wishes! It'll be a long process, but they all are. It probably won't move as fast as the '49 Truck did, but there's a bit more work to do on this one. Glad you guys enjoy my threads! Can't really do anything else sitting in hotel rooms on layovers, so might as well write informatuitive posts <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif I think <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif ...anyway, onto more build junk!

I got the front suspension just about done. What often happens when I restore parts/cars, think about the guys who built these things and the car coming down the assembly line. Mopar lower control arms were natural stamped steel and then dipped into a bucket of cosmoline for rust protection. How far down varies, but most were to about where the large rivet is right by the ball joint. Wonder if the control arm guy had any other jobs to do?

Frank: "Hey Steve, what you doing today?"
Steve: "Oh, nothing. Just dipping control arms. It's supposed to be dipped to the rivet, but I'm going to do a few before it and maybe just one after it so forty years from now it'll be the topic of discussion on internet forums. You?"
Frank: "I see. I'm going to put markings all over the place so those same guys freak out trying to reproduce them. And I'll only put them on some things, and not others just to start a few fights. Hey, what's this "internet" thing you're talking about?? Do I know him?" <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif

With only 53,000 miles on the car, and nobody making correct repros on the drag links, I just cleaned up the originals.

Here's the before pics on the suspension. Marking guy was at it as evidence by the torsion bar adjuster arm having a very large Orange marking after tightening. I'll replicate that afterwards. How I know it was done after installation, and not "dipped" as some claim, is the fact that the side of the control arm had the marking where the brush touched the vertical part of the control arm. The left side was considerably larger than the right side...

Sometimes those LCA "rocker arms" are different colors from one side to the other....orange, blue.
All my cars have different combo's. Looking at a lot of low mile cars - I think they appear to be paint dipped before the LCA gets assembled.

The tie rod clamps (and the sleeves, bolts and nuts) are usually zinc phosphate plated as well. Can't think of anything other than the odd hood latch hardware that has any black oxide on it.

The work you are doing looks good.....I guess I should get back over to the A12 site.....been awhile <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif. I am Maxwellwedge over there.

Have a look at my GTX details showing some good shots of the LCA's etc. GTX... (http://www.moparaction.com/Article/GTX-CELLENT/GTX-CELLENT.html)

Jim,

Thanks for the tips and man, that's a NICE car!!!! You GOTTA bring that to MCACN for sure!!!! I'll be there this year and would like to meet you in person. Interesting thing on those lower control arms. I had a '68 St. Louis built Charger R/T that had blue on the control arm torsion adjusters. Both of mine on the Bee showed Orange. The k-frame on the st.louis car has a yellow brush mark on the steering box mount, idler arm mount, and a green brush stroke on the passenger side motor mount under the bolt on motor mount. The brush mark was on the welded perch on the k-frame. Nothing like that on this one. Yellow brush mark on the idler arm mount though. Understood on the sleeve finish <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif I knew that after I did it that I'd have to redo it. You're a plethora of knowledge as is a lot of those guys on the A12 board for sure. Broke the springs down and will be blasting them later this week. New liners, pads, bolts/bushings/pads/clamps from Badalson are on deck to be installed. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

I believe that all of this is a figment of someones imagination and it has all been creatively photo-shopped by some unscrupulous Mopar fanatic....

OK, don't anyone panic, but I didn't correct any of the incorrectness that has been pointed out to me just yet. I figured I'd add a whole bunch more incorrectness to it, and if my Freshman year Algebra has taught me anything, it's that two negatives make a positive! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif Sooo, on that mentality, I have to end this restoration next year on an even number of incorrect things so they all cancel themselves out. Ya know, it's hard to argue with that logic! My goal is like Bush during the 2nd Gulf War....shock an awe!!!! I'll shock the judges with the sheer number of things wrong, and leave them in awe that anyone would enter a car like this into judging!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif But seriously, fear not! I will be correcting things in the next few months and will re-post for more critiques. So here's my latest things done: Rear leafs rebuilt, front suspension just about done, and I'm starting into the Dana 60 as we speak.

They were originally dipped in cosmoline as a protectant for the raw metal finish.

What Steve said! They were dipped, so to simulate that, I taped off a dip line by the large rivet at the front. Sprayed liberally, let drip dry with runs and such to get the proper look. I didn't use real cosmoline since that stuff stays relatively tacky. I used Krylon battery protectant which is pretty close to the real stuff in color. Hope to wrap up the driveline this month!

Maybe it's the flash...but - I would re-plate the upper control arm can adjusters, brake backing plates and tie-rod sleeve clamps zinc phos. The strut rods could use some quick black or a light zinc phos plate.....maybe ECS's RPM stuff would help take the shine down a little bit.
Nice work!

OK, sorry for the delay on the updates. There's been so much going on as of late it seems, and every time I sit down the computer update something else comes up! Like the other day I got news that Mercury was transiting the sun. Of course, with a rumor like that, I had to break out the telescope. After the retina surgery, I can now see through both eyes again, so here's the update!!!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

I'm wrapping up the drivetrain here and have since got the Dana all buttoned up. Michigan rust really played havok on this thing, and the pitting was pretty severe. I thought about using All Metal on the case to smooth it over, but then thought about the history of the car and leaving some character on the finished product. Plus, I'm lazy. Ain't nobody got time to sand down every fin, nook, and cranny on this rear end! Overall I'm happy with it and think it came out acceptable.

New bearings, seals, etc, as well as the front drums all set to be reinstalled. There are a few minor details on the front hubs I'm missing that I'll correct shortly. (yellow dabs on three studs and a green swipe on one hub...I just can't remember which hub they go on. Have to go back in my notes) Now it's onto the last two major sub-assemblies!

Sparing you all the 1000 photos of a "Before" heater core, here's the finished product minus a stamp that I'm having made up of the part number, and I'm still awaiting a back ordered heater core. Mine didn't do well under the pressure test. It leaked...I mean...don't we all?? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/whistle.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

I'll ad some more here shortly with the stamp and front side after I get the heater core installed. Moving on, it's time to hit the dash!!! Well, not really since then I'd have to fix that dent too... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif

It's amazing what storing a car inside will do to a just about 50yr old wiring harness. It's still bendable without sounding like a bowl of Rice Crispies!! All that's needed on those wires is a good cleaning and a small section wrapped again. I blasted the dash and have everything torn down. I'm awaiting new dash bezels, new switch knobs, and sent the heater plate out for a good rechrome job. Dash pads are in perfect shape too!

Here's the dash painted and the radio installed. And since I have to keep this clean for a while longer, might as well start grinding and sanding down some metal on the body. I mean, why not? It's not like dust will coat everything I just did? And there's nothing like having three things on a car going on at once to make sure you get absolutely nothing done....ever...on anything!

My goal on this side was to keep the original quarter panel in place with the factory undercoating intact. I'm going to try and do the same thing on the other side, but there is a bit more work involved there. But for now, here's the driver's side with a new trunk extension clamped in place. Kelly was sad after I showed her the stripped quarter panel. She says, "But, there's no more Beater Bee!!??!" <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/cry.gif Nope....there's not! At least hopefully not by the end of the year when it's sitting in a fresh Hemi Orange paint job! More to come....

I like it! Beauty and the Bee!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif OK, been quiet around here, so an update is in order. As of today, it's offikal , the metal work is DONE!!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/cool.gif I originally thought about doing full quarters on the car but after some careful assessment of what was, and more importantly, what wasn't in front of me, I thought to myself, "Self? There's a whole lot of solid metal here, and it would be a real shame to hack off all that good ole' fashioned Mopar sheetmetal (even though it rusted coming down the line!). I really only needed lower pieces, and one upper wheel well lip. Now, I don't consider myself any sort of a metalurlologist <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif or anything, but I thought if I could patch these things up it would save me a lot of work. Guess what? Quite the contrary. I've put full quarters on plenty of Chargers and Roadrunners, and a full quarter is a heck of a lot less work that three patches on one quarter. And the good news is all the patches are spliced in so from the inside, there's no visible evidence of a patch installed! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/cool.gif Factory undercoating, spot welds, and body lines are all intact!

That last photos shows the dent that I have not massages out yet. On that quarter panel I replaced the trunk extension, lower rear quarter panel, and a very small patch on the forward front part of the quarter. I have to get those welded-stud-puller-thingies and try and pull that dent out a bit. The cool thing? This dent is what's responsible for the Gray primered fenders on the Beater Bee. While coming home one night, Gary lost control in the snow and spun off the road. What resulted was that dent, the front fenders being dented, and him clipping a mailbox and taking a chunk out of the hood scoop. Fortunately, he had the smarts to go and get the broken piece and he Bondo'ed it back onto the hood!

After all that work, the bodylines on the quarter are saved!! This quarter also needed a trunk floor extension, lower rear patch, lower front patch, wheel well arch (top 12"), as well as a few inner wheel house patches. The line above the wheel well is a little soft, but I'll sharpen that up when I start blocking it out. It's there, but a little more faint than the rear line. Man.....7ft quarter panels, and they're all convex/concave/conpaininmy...well, you know what I'm sayin'.. I'm thinking of holding a Block Party. Maybe invite a few guys over for some good ole' fashioned block sanding! I"m thinking after a couple two-three beers, I'll probably be farther behind than when I started. Hmmm....I think I'll hold off on that idea for now.

TAAA DAA!!!!! This is a monumentabulous event! The metal work is 100% done as of yesterday with only one thing left to do on the initial body assembly and that's strip and prime the decklid! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif What did the Beater Bee need? Michigan (and Gary) took a toll on the body. Luckily, having been taken off the road permanently in 1977, the salts couldn't do more damage than they did. A driver's side floor patch, both trunk extensions, the passenger quarter needed 3 large patches (fore and aft of the wheelwell and large top portion of the wheel lip), part of the passenger outside wheelhouse, the driver's side quarter needed a small forward patch, a large rear patch, and lastly, a passenger side window corner. There's some extensive fiberglass work that I need to do on the hood. That thing really has taken a beating! It's good to see the car as a whole entity again! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

You think YOUR hood is hard to align? Try aligning something with 4 pins that each go in any direction they want to and when you tighten the bolts down, they move, which screws up what you thought you had initially lined up perfectly!!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif
I think I got the gaps pretty close right now, but still some more massaging to do on. These hood pins use 5/8" heater hose as spacers on the hood. The idea is you push the hood down which compresses the rubber (never a good thing..I'm just sayin') and when you install the pin, that makes a nice rattle-free and secure hood hold down. How the heck they did this on the line in the time allowed as the car came rolling down is beyond me. This took 5hrs, 3 beers, 4 lost tools after they became airborne somehow, and a whole lot of words used I never even thought I knew!

The BB is already getting excited about MCACN 2017!!! Most see some previous MCACN passes draped over the front end. I see a hood that needs some serious fiberglass work, the results of someone that doesn't even know how to spray primer, and a very rusty rotisserie that needs some attention after this thing comes off of it. A few more. Side marker reflectors that show the rear bumble bee stripe folded over to the inside after being applied to the rear quarter panel and then being razor slit in an "X" pattern. That black spray paint you see is from Gary after he got the car. He rattle canned the engine bay, trunk, and door jambs black since he thought it looked better. And a piece of the headliner material hanging in the back. Several Mopars I've had have this either here, under the carpet, or both.

And probably the coolest thing I've found was this tag hanging in the quarter window for 47 years!!!! It's a telltale clue as to how the car was built too. The tag is a parts tag with the number of the quarter panel written on it. This tag was actually wrapped around the eyelet of the quarter panel edge where the interior panel is welded to. It is also sprayed with Hemi Orange paint as well as undercoating. So the tag was between the two panels prior to paint. The tag is a parts bin tag that says "O.K". From my understanding, the tags were applied to random parts on a pallet of parts that were "O.K." to be used on assembly. On a pallet of 20 parts, maybe there were 10 tags installed (just a guess). So not every part had them, but various ones did to let inspectors know that whole pile of parts were OK to be sent to the line and be used. Usually, they are removed but this one wasn't and has been hanging in this quarter window for 47yrs!!!!

Here we see a factory goof!!!! You know these things happen, and here's documented proof! This is the clutch pedal bracket that helps hold the clutch pedal in place. On the firewall there are two dimples (all cars have these). If the car has a 4spd, these dimples are drilled out and then a bracket is installed with two studs. Those studs go through the holes on the clutch pedal assembly and are secured by a nut/washer combo. Well, I guess the line worker snapped a stud off, it was hammered over and a bolt/nut was installed in it's place. The hammered over broken stud was covered with sealer when they installed that in the gaps at the firewall/inner fender union. Pretty cool!!!!! You can see the factory Hemi Orange paint on the boo-boo too! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Door Alignment 101: Let me walk you through a day in the life of a highly skilled bodyman. To start, you need to BE one with the door. Don't fight it, embrace it. OK, after you get all kumbaya'y with your sheet metal shell, get out the sockets, scrap wood shims, and oh what the heck, the 5lb sledge. So where to start? It's all about Geometry here (I flunked math), and once you master that mathematical thing, door alignment is nothing more than a walk in the park with your favorite dog. Just always remember who walks who! Lets see. If I raise this end a bit here, that drops the back end of the door. OK.....so, then if I raise the back end, then the front should go down? No? Let's see...loosen this...let me (wedge)...wait....Oh, that needed to be tight first. OK, let me try that again. Loosen this, raise (bang bang bang) that. Hmm...that's worse than it was before. The top is out too far and the bottom is hitting the rocker. Well lets (rachet rachet...bang bang) tap this...( bang ) whoops! Well, that's what bodyfiller is for. That should line up nicely aaannd, it doesn't. OK door, my New Jersey is getting up here....let me try and lower this part and push (bang bang) this in....OK, why is the trunk out of whack now?!?!?!? I didn't touch that!!!!!! Starting to feel like that dog is walking me!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/mad.gif

Still a few more tweaks here. The front end is about 3/16th too low, so I'll need to raise that up. But I know what'll happen. I'll do that and the Challenger's hood won't shut! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif Yeah, I don't know why that would affect a totally different car, but it will! The good news about the panel alignment is looking at survivor cars, their alignment wasn't exactly spot on either. You remember that Lexus commercial with the ball bearing running over the door gaps and such? I'm aiming for that...with a bowling ball. I think I'm almost there!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

And just to add a bit of nostalgia to the restoration, I hung the fender tag by a wire under the dash like they did as the car was coming down the Lynch Road factory back in the day! An interesting thing about fender tags: Lynch Road cars were coded differently (different format) than the other assembly plants and they also got attached to the car in a different way. St. Louis car, etc, were attached to the fender by one screw and the tag was bent up so it could be painted underneath the tag as the car was going down the line. Those tags have a distinct bend on the tag and one painted hold down screw. The other screw is not painted since it was installed after paint. Lynch Road car tags were hanging somewhere inside the car, usually under the dash, and only got a dusting of paint depending on how much overspray made it to the tag. Some show more paint than others, but both screws are unpainted and no bend in the tag corner. So next time you're at a show you can flex your Moparness! Or you can keep your mouth shut and just enjoy the nice cars! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/cool.gif

I can't wait for my copy to come here!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif And here's another to add to the "pic" pot! I was very fortunate to have Gary's daughter, Kristen, come out for some photos with the car right before I paint it. She was so excited to see her Dad's old car and she's planning on being there next year during the unveiling! I have something special planned for that!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/cool.gif I was able to walk around and tell her about a few things on the car that Gary relayed to me. She laughed, and I could tell it meant a lot to her and the whole family that this car is coming back to life. I'm anxious to get back on it!!!!

Thanks guys! Now I'm over- the- top motivated to get the old gal in paint! So, it's onto the bodywork! I'm starting into it now that the metal work is all done. The first thing I'm tackling is to fill all the pitting in the trunk. I saved the floor, but it's like the surface of the moon! And guess what? I live in Houston, and we gots a friggin' problem over here! I figured I'd hit that a little each day so I don't burn myself out too quickly. Meanwhile, I started to get a game plan together on the rest of the car. I figured I'd go deep, punt early, then pull a hat trick and slide into home! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif I'm not sure what I just said made any sense, but it sure made this post longer! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Thanks guys! Sorry for the delay on the reply. That whole work thing getting in the way again, Mike <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif But vacation is underway and it's time to get some bodywork done! First step, body line rebuild!

I started by taping off the dull remnants of the factory stamping. I then used some body glaze and tapered a very slight skim coat across the tape. Removing the tape revealed a very small ridge which I knocked down with 180. This is a very small amount of glaze. Just enough to get that crisp line back!

Rain today here in the Houston area, so I decided to keep the doors shut and tackle the brake and clutch quadrant as well as blast the bumper brackets. So step one, take a lot of pictures. There's a lot of small parts on this thing and they can go any which way! Notice the mark on the spring. That's an inspection mark of some sort, but I don't know what it signifies exactly. Might be a B-Body or Plant specific thing. Either way, it'll go back on! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/10/full-18993-50363-dscn1768.jpg
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/10/full-18993-50364-dscn1769.jpg

So with it all disassembled, I blasted all the parts and then started to detail it up. And with only 53K miles on it, the clutch and brake pedal pads were in surprisingly great shape so for now, I just cleaned them up with some conditioner and used some stainless polish on the pedal trim.

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/10/full-18993-50369-quad4.jpg

And yes, I built that little stand. I know! You want one too? Everyone needs a clutch and brake pedal quadrant stand!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/cool.gif I'll wrap this up in some plastic for safe storage until I take it out for reassembly. OH, and I fogot to mention the Quarters. No, it's not something that a line worker left in there. It's a simple way to remove the clutch spring. An old trick I learned from an old hotrod guy. With the clutch pedal retracted in the "up" position, the spring is extended. Use washers, or in my case, money since I'm just swimming in cash ( <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/no.gif) and when you retract the spring it holds it's extended shape making removal easy. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

I had someone email me asking how much I've spent so far on the paint and body at the shop I'm using. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif I first replied slandering this "Shop" for wasting valuable time by taking photos of themselves and posting them online!!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif But, since the shop is me and I don't get paid, I don't tend to keep track of my hours but for some weird reason I did on this one. So let's see...I'm at 175hrs of bodywork so far on the car plus an additional 40hrs of metal work. I probably have another 40hrs left, minimum, on the bodywork. As a highly skilled Five Star AAA (or is that AA??) rated bodyman, I charge $50/hr labor rate. Your shop's labor rate may be different. So that's....um....uhhhhh.....two...carry the one....denominator..... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif And all the materials is PPG, and they're pretty proud of their stuff, so that's a punch to the purse. And who the heck knows what else I'm missing in there?! So the answer is "priceless"!!!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Yesterday I got the soft bodyline above the driver's rear wheel well nice and crisp and the rest of the car is alomst there. Better pics of that later today. I seam sealed all the areas that needed it: door/trunk skins, trunk drip rails, quarter panel/door jambs, etc. I'll shoot another primer round this morning, and then start with 320 and the guide coat (a second time) today. And I'll be back for more trunk work this afteroon too! I wasn't happy with the front wheel lips, so I spent yesterday redoing those as well. Did I already mention I'll never ever ever NEVER EVER EVER NEVER do another Coronet agian???<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif

And I discovered the whomptie of all whompties on the front fender! How the heck I missed this is a head scratcher <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif What I've found is that with a whole day of sanding, I need a break to let my hands rest. First thing in the morning is when I find whatever I missed. Can you imagine if I painted that? Dave,

I remember when I had a big repair on my 59 Impala (everything below the mid-body trim moulding on the passenger side), the body guy let me help and I block sanded the hell out of that thing only to find the most minor imperfection here and there. When I pointed one of them out to him, he told me to run my hand across the top of the fender where it was factory smooth. It wasn't at all. After the paint, clear and wet sanding, it was perfectly smooth. Better than the factory.

I'm sure you car will be spectacular when done. Thanks for spinning some humor into what appears to be a major addiction around here.

Alrighty....the past few days have been productive. The production that has gone on over the weekend is a product of producing a proactive productivity-related protificated providence. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif In other words, I got a lot o' crap done! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif I was able to spray the entire car in dip gray primer. I'm very happy with the result since most of the heavy pitting has been filled in and it starting to look like a restored car again!

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/10/full-18993-50946-dip2.jpg

I shot the engine bay, the trunk, the whole interior, and the underside to include the wheel wells and under the fenders. My goal was once the overspray is done, and then the undercoating in the wells, where ever there isn't V2 Hemi Orange, you will see the color of the primer from where the car was submerged in the dip tank. Hence the name, dip primer. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif I tried to get all the nooks and crannies all over so it appears as if the car was dipped and not sprayed. As you can see, this is a big project and a big process so I decided the break this whole paint process up over the course of 4 days. Up next will be the overspray with Hemi Orange!!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

And here we are with the factory overspray look! I am using base/clear on the car, and that won't really look right when you try an overspray look. So I mixed a 50/50 ratio of base/clear and hardened to the clear specs for this. This resulted in a lower sheen, which is exactly the look I wanted. I also moved down the pans a little more on the inside since the HVLP guns of today don't really put out the volume and pressure that the guns of the past did. From survivor cars I've seen, the pattern goes a little further in that the HVLP gun would do. So I feathered the spray in further on the pans. I think I got close to it looking correct!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Wheel wells on the Mopars really seemed to get a lot of paint. This area and the front inner fenders get good coverage. I also did thew lower front frame rails as well. I'll massk those off when I shoot the engine bay tonight with the proper base and clear. More to come!!!! It's getting there!!!!

Thanks, guys!!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif The last few days have been exhausting! I know....I can't believe I have those in my portfolio too <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif. I try to invest seasonally, too. I buy pumpkins in August and sell in October. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif It's a win-win all around. Where was I? Oh yeah, speaking of pumpkins.....here's my Great One!!!! First step was to mask off the exterior and undercarriage in preps for spraying the interior, engine bay, and trunk.

To add some autheticity to the paint job, I hung the fender tag from the steering column support and dusted it with the base coat only. All A12 cars were built at the Lynch Road plant and this, unlike at the other plants, was how the tag was painted. As an example, a St. Louis car would have the tag screwed into the inner fender with on edge bent up. Paint was applied to the tag and then it was bent back and fastened with the other screw. As a result, the tag has a bend on one edge, one screw is painted and the other unpainted. Lynch Road cars had the tag hung inside the car so some got paint, some got a dusting, depending on the painter that day. As a rule, they are all unbent and the screws are both natural. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Now with the trunk, interior and engine bay out of the way, the next day I came in and spent a good 8hrs masking everything off. I masked the engine bay where the inner fender meets up with the outer fender so there is no visible line anywhere. The mask line on the firewall is under the drip rail as you can see above. After all that was done, out comes the base and I was just waiting for the next thing to go wrong!!!!<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/whistle.gif

Looks beautiful.

BTW, the left screw should be painted orange and the right screw would be natural on your car. See the slight bend in the left upper corner of the tag? That is there because the tags were installed by one screw prior to paint and bent up slightly in case one of the line inspectors decided to put an inspection mark into the tag. After the car got further down the line, the other screw was installed later.

Ahhh, very interesting. Learn something new everyday. I'll have to go back and look at my old photos of my Hemi orange, Lynch Road '71 Hemi Charger sunroof car (the one Tim Welborn has now). it was original paint when I got it. Funny thing about that car is that there was little to no Hemi orange paint in the engine compartment. It was as if the painter made one half-hearted pass with the paint gun while standing in front and never got the firewall or the inner fenders below the top portions.

A12pilot
10-28-2016, 12:20 PM
Steve,

Yeah, that's the reason that the bottoms of the frame rails, inner trunk lid supports, under the package tray, were all just usually dip gray primer. The painter had a job to do and if he couldn't reach it, oh well. Under side of the battery tray is another common non-painted area.

No worries the critique with the fender tag. I'm the KING of learning something new everyday!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif Kelly tells me that often!

Another thing about LR cars is the dimples in the firewall. There are either one, two, a dimple and a chisel mark, two chisel marks, on one side or both. It varies by car, they aren't uniform or consistent, and are only on Lynch Road cars. I never heard of that and there is a 9 page thread on the A12 board about just that! Interesting, trivial, and just when you think you heard it all something like this comes up and it makes you scratch your head <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif

Always open for critiques, corrections, and questions.....and beer....I like beer <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

I shot the jambs, inner doors, trunk gutters, and underside of the decklid all at the same time so as not to have any overspray or masking lines. The trunk lid I kept closed with a wire that went from the latch to the striker latch on the underside of the lid. On mopars, that latch plate is painted body color. The latch mechanism isn't painted but the bolts are since there was a mechanism installed to keep the trunk closed when the outside was painted. Aso a result, the truck latch striker gets painted on the deck lid, and the latch should be plated correctly [no paint] but the bolts that hold it on are painted body color since those bolts were holding the temporary latch in place during the paint process <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif hope that helps!

After masking off the doors and painting the upper and lower parts with the single stage black, I added factory number markings that were on the doors when I disassembled them. Also, the front and rear window channels had a yellow tick mark by each reveal molding clip. I assume this was so that after the vinyl top was installed they knew where the screw hole was. All the new parts are showing up and I figured I'd better get to wetsanding and polishing before I have a car done and then realize I never did the cut and buff! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif I did get a few bugs in the top coat, and of course the worse one is staring you right in the face. So I'm going to have to get the dental pick out to remove said bug and then add a few drops of clear on top. Hopefully after the sanding the worst one will be unseen. I'm going for the factory look so I want just a tad bit of peel, but not too much. Fortunately, I'm lazy, so doing it sub-par is right up my alley! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/11/full-18993-51534-20161103_134856.jpg

I'm starting with 1500, 1000 in some places where there is excessive peel, and then I'll work my way up to 10,000 grit.

Looks great Dave. There are a lot of parts on GM cars that were dipped and I try to replicate the same by dipping them in a pale of semi gloss black lacquer. They have changed the formula over the years so it does not react like it used to but still looks better than spraying and you also get the solids and solvents to separate around holes and similar areas giving it an opaque run so to speak. Looks perfect for us anal retentive guys.

Thanks for the suggestion on the jack paint. Great information! I'll be getting into that next week. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

In continuing on the continuation of wetsanding, <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif I'm done and the car is buffed out. Good news? No compound residue anywhere. Bad news? While painting, I bumped into the workbench which, not realizing it, awakened the Giant Mothra who then landed on my fender.

TAZ, I'm using the 3M Perfect-It system. It's a 4 pad, 3 compound kit. Works really well. I had tried Meguiar's system as well starting with their heavy cut compound, and that worked well too. But hands down the 3M is the best.

Thanks for the compliments! No, it's not perfect and will no way hold a candle next to a Mikey special, but I'm pretty proud of it! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

I found this deal on Amazon to be the best on double sided pads and quick connect adapter.

https://www.amazon.com/Perfect-33661-Qui...+polishing+pads (https://www.amazon.com/Perfect-33661-Quick-Connect-1-2-3/dp/B01BN8ITK0/ref=sr_1_6?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1478978786&sr= 1-6&keywords=3m+polishing+pads)

I bought my compounds and polish from local jobber, in quarts and gallons.... this doesn't look like a bad start for pints and pads either. Just can't tell if the pads are quick connect..but it doesn't appear to come with the adapter.

I added the grille and radiator blackout and starting to add a few parts here and there. It gets kind of sloppy with slight overspray on the upper support and spotty coverage behind bolts based on the spray pattern. I looked at several survivor cars to replicate the psttern. I'm refinishing the gas tank and waiting on a few more parts to come in so i can get the tank and lines installed. After that, it comes off the twirler for the last time!!!

Thanks Bill! I think I went to a carshow last weekend....all I remember is I blinked and next thing I know I was back home! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif That weekend just goes by WAAAY too fast. It was nice meeting a bunch of faces from the forum. I think next year I'm going to set up a "Meet the Dork" booth so I can just sit in one place and meet everyone. Just not enough time.

So, moving on, it's nice to have some parts prerestored so they can just go on immediately right after paint! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif The past few days I've been busy, and would have been more busy but parts are on backorder. Funny...they said "in stock" when I clicked the button! So a quick call to the big retailer and here's how it went down:

Retailer: "Hello, Day 2, can I help you?"
Me: "Um, yeah, I see that a bunch of my parts I ordered that said they were in stock are actually on backorder..."
Retailer: "Yeah, what's the problem?"
Me: "The probelm is many things, but right now, when will I expect to see my body plug kit?"
Retailer: "Let's see..(keyboard typing sound)...hmm...please hold...[click]
- - - sound of "love hurts" by Nazareth - - -
Retailer: "Sir?"
Me: "Yes?"
Retailer; "Please hold..."
- - - "theeyyyre nooottttt fooolin' meee....I knoww it isnt' true.....I know it isn't true..." - - -
Retailer: "OK sir, It says you'll see them in Nevuary..."
Me: "Nevuary....when's that?" <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif
Retailer: "Right after (inaudible static sound)...Thank you for using Day 2!" {click} <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif

So, in the meatime while I wait for parts to show up, here's some handiwork to get me by until Nevuary shows up <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/bs.gif

Gastank cleaned up, all the lines installed and shocks hung in place. I detailed up the filler neck with a mottled finish on neck, along with the red painted band on the part that seats in the tank seal. I don't know if that's a sealer they used from the factory or something else, but its red. And I had red laying around, so red went on it! Also, the filler opening is dipped in black epoxy. A few more with the wiper linkage, heater core, and peals installed. Also, engine bay with the master cylinder, lines, and a few other odds and ends installed. I'm going to have to order a new MC lid from Frank (you know...you could lower that price on that Frank...I'm just sayin' <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif ) and a few, ok, a LOT, of other parts from him shortly.

Something cool...my Bee has about 53K miles on it. As a result, the pedal pads are in really great shape! So I thought I'd leave them on so a little piece of Gary could be with me everytime I climb behind the wheel! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Waiting on the emergency brake cables to come in so I can finish up the undercarriage and get this thing off the twirler!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/headbang.gif

Spent many weekends as a kid with my father and his 55 Chevy street racing on lynch road. It was nothing to show up there around midnight on Friday night and there be 1500-2000 people there for the street races. Race right up to daylight Saturday mornings leave have breakfast go home and sleep and be right back at midnight on Saturday night. Lots of great memorie.

Great job on the restoration Sir.

Thanks guys! And Phil, you know darn well I'm jumping into that Stang post haste! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif. Ok, I am going to slow down a bit, so don't panic. Have to pace myself. Can't be getting this thing done too soon since I'll want to beat on it worse than a teenager with a Playboy. And my luck I'd probably do something to it that I couldn't get fixed in time for MCACN 2017. I can hear that phone call now....

Bob: "MCACN World HQ, can I help you?"
Me: "Hey Bob, Dave here. You might remember me from such memorable emails as 'A nightmare before MCACN' , and 'Paint blops; A clown's guide to making your muscle car look factory authentic'.....listen, about that unveiling. Are you by chance intereted in doing the post Demolition Derby look this year? Great! Thanks Bob! We can always count on you! ( Click )

Well....several things are going to prevent that from happening this month. Mainly, the wiper motor is out being restored and until that comes back the dash won't go in since it's a royal pain hooking that up with the dash installed. Steer & Gear has the steering box, so I'm waiting on that too. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif but in the meantime, I've got the whole interior, doors, headliner/v-top, and another polishing round to do. Not to mention a bunch of redoing junk on the steering linkage finishes. Good thing I'm not planning on having this judged! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif So fear not! I'll have more updates and pics forthcoming!

Something unique on the front fender splash shield retaining bolt at the fender. Looking at several survior cars, this bolt was blacked out with a a brush, not spray. Below you can see the torsion bar details. Remember those factory drips? Now you can see them installed. They don't face downwards...they basically face which ever way they happened to be installed. Torsion bars are indexed Left and Right. And the part number faces aft and is visible through the torsion bar crossember. 780 and 781 are the numbers for mine as depicted on the Broadcast sheet.<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif OOOOOO! Front suspension just about buttoned up. I'm waiting on some NOS upper control arm bumpers to come in before I get the massive drums on and let the suspension "hang". Once those are in, the car goes up in the air as far as I can get it with jack stands and then I can spray the undercoating in the wells. Yep....all this stuff goes on first then the junk gets sprayed over everything. I'm going to be a little neater than the factory was, but still going to get it as close as I can to the factory look.

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/12/full-18993-54020-dscn2222.jpg

I detailed my spare tire with a few markings, paint blop where the wheel weight is to be installed, and the "104" sticker. I need to repaint the rim since it's a bit dull and showing some wear. All wheels are the correct 15 x 6 JJ "H" wheels. 4 are dated correct but two are a little out of date for my build. Mike,
The regulator and arms are galvanized steel. The big track window mounting is cast aluminum. Lots of photos of that thing out of the car to remember how it all goes back together. Finally got a box of parts in so I can make some more progress! Since I detailed up the spare, I'm itchin' to get that bad boy in there! Using the survior car as a reference, I decided to stamp my trunk mat to match.

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/12/full-18993-54364-dscn2305.jpg

As you can see on the above image, the pattern is repeated on the roll of material that is used for the mat, so the upper number gets cut off if you continue the repetition. Makes it looks more authentical n' stuff! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

The top picture is the spare tire from a 5600 Mile survivor Bee, and the below picture is my rendition of it for my car. What do the markings mean? Best I can tell, they were the intials of the worker that installed the spare in the car that day. I'm just kidding, but now that it's here black and white on the intermanet, I'm sure it won't be long before it pops up on another forum as gospel! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

Vinyl top has been laying out for the past few weeks, and next month I'll install it. It's been boxed up for quite a while, so I want it to lay out for a good month or two to get most of the harder wrinkles out before it gets glued down. Nothin' one of them heat guns can't get out,or a propane torch, but still..... this helps!

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/12/full-18993-54371-dscn2312.jpg
Above you can see the yellow tick marks that I applied at each reveal molding screw hole. Once the top is in place, this will make finding those nice and easy. After I removed my top I found these marks at each hole, front and back, where it was covered by the vinyl top. Pretty cool!!!!!<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif So you know I had to replicate that, but this time, they actually have some sort of meaning and purpose.

Installing the hardtop side window to quarter glass seals. With only 53,000 miles on the Bee, these were actually in really good shape but they did have wear, so best to replace.

Installing the rear quarter window...let's see..if I move this screw in, that pushes that out. But if I move that screw out, it pushes that.....hmm....still pushes that out<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif....how did this darn thing go in here, anyway!?!?!?!

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/12/full-18993-54374-dscn2325.jpg

Success! Everything lined up, nothing broke (yet), and the windows actually go up and down!<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/headbang.gif

I added the grease to my hinges, and I'll dust on some V2 basecoat shortly. Yep...they greased and painted right over the trunk bushings where meet the trunk lid arms. I held off doing that when I was painting for fear of contamiantion being sprayed all over and winding up, where else, but on the quarter panels!<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif

The Bobinator told me to get into writing. There's huge, no, Montountinous amounts of money involved in writing articles for Muscle Car magazines. Green Zee....I painted the top since I wanted the car to look cool while it was sitting waiting for the top to go on. No other reason than that, really. I would have done it Hemi Orange but just wanted the contrast. The base/clear provides a nice layer of protection under the top over just the DP Epoxy. It'll be scuffed with a Scotch Brite Gray pad before the glue goes on and the top goes down. You'll know if it doesn't work when I attend the PSMCD that following year and the top goes flying off and hits my opponent! Hey, that may be how I can advance to the next round!!?? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif It sure won't be from shifting correctly! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif

Of all the parts on the Bee that I've redone myself, there are always a few that are best left for the people that specialize in the parts that they specialize in. I for one, know my limitations. And those limitations put limits on my ability to not be limited by my limits. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif So, what's all that mean? I done sent my wipey motor to Bruce Somer in CA and I was like a kid on Christmas day opening the box! It's hard to tell the excitement in my photo, I know.......here's the before and after:

Back in it's rightful place in the engine bay! It's one less box on the shelf. Amazingly, the boxes on the shelf are shrinking but they are being filled up with other junk almost instantaneously!

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/12/full-18993-55053-dscn2330.jpg

Heater hoses installed, correct master cylinder cover plating, his pins chromed. Lots of small stuff coming together. I need to redo the coil with correct green lettering and a few smaller details.

I had my steering box upgraded by Steer & Gear to have more of a "sport" versus the original "Lusitania" feel like all old Mopars have <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif Kelly even comments how much "power" there is in the steering and it feels like you're sailing the high seas! Right before I parked the Bee and decided I didn't want a driving car anymore, we went for a cruise and I blurted out "Hard a port, Matey! Yyyaaarrrrrr! Ye' bountiful spoils await! Yyaarrr!" Her reply? "Oh, you mean Sonic is on the left?" And why I sounded like a pirate in that sentence but was referring to a luxury liner that outdated the pirates by 250yrs is beyond me! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif

Yeah, that's the stuff! Kind of a shame that big air cleaner hides it. But, big air cleaner means big engine, and if said air cleaner was smaller, then it wouldn't be an A12 car.....no thread....no posts....Darrell would be stuck in Camaroville not being tempted by another make.....Bob wouldn't even give me the time of day....and the list goes on. Steam gun? Check! Glue? Check! Second carpet standing by for when I cut this one wrong? DOUBLE CHECK!!!!<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif The carpet is down and it's starting to resemble an interior again! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif What about those doors? Well, there's been some set backs, and only a select few know the gorey details, but just know the Beater Bee and me are officially blood blothers. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif Meanwhile, I did get the passenger side door finished. Gary's car has 53K miles on it, and was parked inside most of it's life so there is very minimal wear on the door panels. As you can see here, after a good cleaning, they're just about perfect!

I can't install the back panels until after I get the headliner installed which will be in about a week or so. It's 24 degrees and everything needs to warm up before I start on the top and headliner. H-Town shuts down when it gets below about 50. Matter of fact, I think the only de-icing truck that IAH has is an old 1972 F-150 Ranger that's half rusted out and may even run on the Type IV deicing fluid that it sprays the planes with <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/no.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif
