So me and friend inquired about a Daytona Yellow 1969 Chevelle SS396 4spd. car for sale locally in the Philadelphia area. There was
a 73 year old gentleman selling the car and mentioned to us he had the car for over 20 years in storage and that it was rust free!
The day came 5 years ago when he decided to have the car go under a frame off restoration. Upon a brief visual inspection of the car
we asked him to pop the hood so he did. Not to get crazy or anything but we noticed areas that were either under restored, over restored
or incorrectly restored which is fine for now because they are easy fixes. We were told the car was purchased in late December, 1969 or early
January 1970 at Reedman's in Langhorne, Pa. The guy in the first photo is friends with the seller and has known the car it's entire life.
*Here's what we know and were told---
-1969 Chevelle SS396 Convertible 4spd./Vin. #136679BXXXXXX Baltimore built car
-Has NO build sheet and was told they looked everywhere before the restoration.
-CE replacement block from 1971 (same engine has been rebuilt & bored .30) Has about 50 miles on it.
**Unclear whether this car originally had the L34 or the L35 engine
-Trim tag reads 76 B (Daytona Yellow) w/Black bucket vinyl interior (*idiot me forgot to record the build date <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/no.gif )
**Although I forgot to take a photo the trim tag it does not appear to have been ever removed (Letter "L" is on there also)
-RPO D96 stripe delete car
-Car has all original glass, all original sheet metal, floor pan and trunk pan (excellent shape)
-M21 4spd trans. (rebuilt and was told it is born with transmission, still have to verify)
-12 Bolt Posi rearend w/3.31 gears (was told it is also born with--rebuilt and at the moment it is believed to be)
-Original front & rear bumpers have been re-chromed (*unsure if rear bumperettes are original)
-Original chrome valve covers w/drippers (untouched)
-Original distributor (did not check numbers)/Unsure about alternator
-Original SS wheels w/SS396 center caps, trim rings (did not check codes yet)
-Original bucket seats w/headrests (
-Original AM/FM radio--antenna mast on front fender
-Original 4spd. console w/original Hurst shifter
-Original fan, pulleys, brackets, water pump, power steering pump & box, rad support & radiator (tag on radiator gone)
-New interior includes rug, door panels, dash, sun visors & weather stripping
-New suspension, tires and brakes (original spiral shocks are long gone)
-New incorrect master cylinder/brake booster is original
-New repro inner fender wells, new wheelhouse moldings & all exterior SS396 badges
-New black convertible top (Manual)
-Rebuilt Rochester 4BBL carb--original?? (did not check the numbers)
-Photos documenting rebuild/restoration with receipts of all work done
Looking back there were a host of questions I did not or forgot to ask him such as "Do you have a POP
for the car?" Or whether or not can you find any old pictures from back in it's early days. Basically
I'm just trying to get an idea what this car is worth according to the info given above. I know there are
plenty Chevelle experts and gurus on sYc. The gentleman was kind enough to tell us to come back anytime for
a better inspection. Ok guys what do you think?
Thanks,
Sal
