I recently picked up this 69 Camaro flat bottom cowl induction air cleaner. I have had these in the past and they were easy to ID as original since they were not reproduced. I was checking today and saw that they are reproduced now. I plan to sell this air cleaner and want to be sure it is an original part before I put it up for sale.

I am pretty certain this is an original part. It is in very good shape but does appear to have been blasted to bare metal at some point and repainted as evidenced by light pitting under the paint in areas. Are there any tell tale signs of a reproduction air cleaner compared to an original. The notch in the snorkel used to be a quick indicator but I think the latest repops have that as well. Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason

Jason, I sold an original one about a year ago. The reproductions on the flat part of the bottom have a lot of wrinkles on the stamping. That's one way.

Rich,

Thanks for the reply. This one doesn't have major wrinkles on the bottom. It does have wrinkles on the rear indented area.

Thanks again,

Jason

The forming wrinkles on the back and insides are normal GM and with the 90 deg tube. Looks like an original one to me! What diameter is the tube?

I've had many, both with the 90 degree vent tube and with the 45 degree tube. Never found a different diameter between the two versions. I believe that to be an old wives tale. I will state that the 90 degree version came on 350 engined cars though.

The tube is about one inch in diameter with the raised area at the end about 1.1 inches.

Thanks for all the replies,

Jason

I have a survivor one here and every wrinkle/dimple fabrication mark I can see is the same. Its definitely an original. I wonder if the vent tube is big block/small block depending on 45 deg. bend or 90 deg. bend. I thought the 90 deg. bend was for no extension ring cowl air cleaner big block engines? No extension ring 302 Zs have 45 deg? 305 with extension ring have 90?

I believe all 69, whether bb or sb had the 90 degree tube. I think they went to two 45's later, for over the counter units.
