OK, this one is completely confusing to me. Last night I bid on an auction that said the listing was to end at 15:30 PST. I placed a bid 7sec before the end of the auction and was the high bidder for a couple seconds, then I was outbid. Looking at the bid history, I see that the winning bid was received at 15:30:11.! How is it possible that a bid was accepted 11 secs after 15:30 (the end of the auction)?????
I was watching the official count down on the listing when I placed my bid at 7secs before the end. I don't think it would have allowed me to place a bid after the countdown reached 0. What the heck is going on???? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif

You got sniped at the 4-5 second mark.

Verne it is very simple to get beat by a bid placed on an earlier date. The bidder put a maximum bid in a few days ago and you got beat by that max.
Even though people have a bid you never know what there maximum bid is.
Always good to bid at your max at what you are willing to pay for the item at your highest price.
Happens all the time.

Shouldn't a proxy bid show up automatically before you're ever shown as high bidder?

No, the winning bid was a new bid, not a proxy bid. The bid was made 11sec AFTER the auction ended. The bid history confirmed this. The listing was set to end at 15:30 and after it was over it said the auction ended at 15:30:12.
When you submit a listing, it will either start exactly when you hit the button and then have some seconds after the minute - OR you can set a start time in 15min increments, such as 15:30 on the dot. This one was 15:30 on the dot, but actually ran another 12sec to let the other bidder get his bid in to win. That's the issue.

Maybe it was already in the system but took that long to get it posted. It is a stupid setup anyway. They should keep extending the auctions by say 15 seconds as long as they are getting bids. That way the high bidder actually gets it and not the guy that snipes it. Other auctions do it that way. Would generate more money for everyone.

..$10 says Charley was the one who outbid you.

I agree that would allow more bids, like in a live auction where the hammer doesn't come down until there are no more bids being made. In this case, I think I got screwed because I watched the seconds count down to the end (which I THOUGHT was the end) but it somehow took another bid after the clock had run out. I've never before seen an auction end AFTER the posted ending time. I'm not going to bother complaining to ebay because I know how far that will get me..... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

Charley would definitely NOT be interested in the item I was bidding on. You have my address to send the 10 bucks to.

Unfortunately, you are right on the money there, Verne. Seems like eBay gets screwier by the week.

Honestly though, I've NEVER seen this happen in the past and I've been the high bidder on several hundred auctions since 1999 and many of my bids have been placed in the last couple of seconds!--FWIW.

Vern, pretty sure you fell short up against one of those E bid sits, that's how there bids come in, someone had there bid set higher than yours.... I use esnipe or something like that cuzz comcast can hang on me so I set my max bid and forget about it. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

OK. OK. I can accept that. I surely am no expert on how these things work, or not!

OR what I do. I what until the last few seconds, have my bid ready of what I am willing to spend and push the button right at the end. This happens a lot on popular items. A lot can happen in 7 seconds.
