this was a car I rode in back in the late seventies then I bought it broken(yes the ride impressed me that much) owner was a old dope smoker guy I had met when I moved to Dallas around 78 I believe I bought it mid 80's and sold it in early 90's. car had non power drum brakes no P/S no air. I wish I had the vin #.I heard some stories about the car, most of which were true. I had alot of fun with the car.
pic was as was when bought

Looks SCJ maybe. If it was factory 3.91's it's SCJ no question. Rochester or Holley carb?

It's a Super CJ. A non Ram Air car, the air cleaner base is correct for a Holley 780. PS delete idler and rev limiter. Looks very original there.

Thanks I was hoping for a SCJ vote, it had holley carb and intake on it adjustable valves DOOE heads IIRC guy said it had a rod out I hoped spun bearing after getting it home I pumped the pedal and it started right up, KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK and it even idled but there was milkshake running down the drive - wasnt orig block so I found a 460 and put that in it.
One night a friend had borrowed it and came home on wrecker this time it dropped a valve <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif I had to send one head out to be welded up and built another 460 with the sewer port heads(and stailess valves this time) ran really good and eventually sold it and 2 owners later he called whating to know what I had done to the engine because it ran so well -that made me feel good. I also added factory power frt disc brakes to the car.
Do the taillights seem out of place? I always like the GT taillights and PO had installed these on the car before I bought it. I did remove them once to repaint the black and saw the rear panel had been dented - filled with filler and painted over the original cobra sticker!

few more pics. I always loved the fastback look of this car and always wondered why you never saw them in old stock car races? guess it wasnt as aero as the earlier Torinos? it could carry 6 people and had a HUGE trunk I had wanted custom plates for it but never did - would of been 2TNSFN <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif car weighed 3850# empty.

definite on memories! I used to have 351 emblems that I had on fenders - was easier to start something with that big car. Headers were Hookers the 2 rear tubes on each side were slip fit, it wore out 2 sets till I installed new springs in it. It even used to have a tow hitch on it, guess was good tow vehicle if you were in a hurry

One of my "one that got away stories" is a Competition Orange 4-speed shaker car. Very nice driver in Beatrice NE. and I passed on it for five grand. This was in '97 and I'd just bought a new Mustang GT and was dumping all my money into trying to get that pig 4.6 2 valve engine to run half as good as my old 5.0 stuff.

Of course, a year later we'd all learned the hard way that early two valves were never going to run as good as a 5.0 no matter how much time and effort you put in it, which made passing on the Cobra even more irritating, and my shiny new Mustang was parked outside on the far side of the garage so I wouldn't have to look at it. I picked up a Grabber Blue 429 Torino GT and then about a year later a medium blue 4-speed non-shaker Cobra. Both great cars but I could never get that Orange snake out of my head.

I know where there's a blue 71 Cobra that could be bought, but it's "just" a 351 4V car... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif

In 1965, the orange was called Poppy Red. For the 1968 Montego and 1969 Boss 302, it was Calypso Coral. Mercury called it Competition Orange in 1969-71. The 1970 mid-size Fords and Mustangs were Vermilion.

I think the Maverick Grabber had a neat name for it too.

Anyway, here's what you're looking for.

Wasn't the Maverick color Home on the Orange or something like that?

Thanks for the production info. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

You're correct on the Maverick, I think.

Notice Marti got the orange wrong for the Torino. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/3gears.gif

What about a factory black SCJ car?

Kool Torino,

All CJ are Kool, but the SCJ transformed the cars into serious 1/4 milers.

My first experience with an SCJ came many years ago, when I purchased a '65 Ford Pick-up, short bed, step-side that a guy had installed the drive-train out of his wrecked SCJ Torino, 4 speed. The truck was amazing quick. Never ran it at the track, and on street tires the faster the rolling start the better. The light weight truck and the 429 SCJ were a wicked combination.

The solid lifter cam on an SCJ has that Old Skool Muscle car sound in spades.

That car was a blast! at the time my Z had an oval port 427 in it and the Z was few hundred pounds lighter and Torino still had the edge. couse it was a 466 then with ported "sewer pipe" SCJ heads
The custom plate I always wanted for it: 2 TNS FN

The 3.91 or 4.30 automatically says its a SCJ. Also the air cleaner bottom with the *front* (non SCJ's have a side location) 90 degree nipple for the vent line also says scj.
