I looked out the window yesterday and thought someone threw a couple cantaloupe melons in our front yard.

With all the rain lately we had a crop of giant puffball mushrooms sprout up overnight.

How big you ask?

Bigger than a dog's head...

He was so scared he ran back in the house and hid under the cat. (Who is also abnormally large)

Here he is in full lounge position:

And the cat looks thoroughly un-amused

Must be the mushrooms he ate. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

HAHA <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/haha.gif No that looks like a genuine dislike for the dog ... plus I'm not sure that is that kind of mushroom LoL

Between the Jack Russell and the three cats, this is "No Mouse Land." In the winter the cats try to herd any mouse they see and play with it for a while. The dog just barges in and eats them up. I remember a year ago when we were all chasing this one mouse around the living room in an attempt to catch and release him outside. I finally caught it and opened the front door, threw it out so it could run away but before I could close the front door, the darn thing ran right back inside and straight into the dog's mouth. The dog was laying on the ground with his mouth open like it was a cave. Weirdest thing I have ever seen. The mouse made a bee-line right into his mouth and he swallowed it whole. Never even chewed once. The cats were not amused. They then went back to harassing the dog. (Their regularly scheduled program)

That's hilarious. Sounds like an episode of Tom and Jerry.

Yeah, we're getting mushrooms popping up as well. Not that big, are you feeding them octane booster or something? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Must be the Jersey air. It got even bigger over the past few days. Something knocked it over (or tripped over it) and took a bite out of it today. Probably just another one of them pesky Sasquatches. Darn bigfoots, you just can't keep 'em out of the yard.

That's a baby giant growing mushroom called a giant 'Puffball', its edible. by mid Sept-early October they grow the size of a basketball. though not as tasty-fresh as this baby found mid August.

This is how we grow the shrooms down south.. This is the 3rd grouping of mushrooms this year in the same spot.. Should have gotten a comparison for perspective but the head of the shroom is about 4" in dia on the largest one..

You are required to have a dog or cat in the photo for scale otherwise we cannot consider it for the contest. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/scholar.gif

We have those growing like crazy in SW FLA as well. One was the size of a Duck Pin bowling ball, and solid when I kicked it. I wonder how bad they are for dogs?
