Muscle Car Review..

Just picked up the September issue....wanted to read the story about the L78. I was surprised there were some obvious errors concerning the compression ratio and the style of Holley carb. Do these guys fact check this stuff with folks who know <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif

In a similar vein, the current issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines has a story about the 64 Impala SS. They state that the 300hp 327 had solid lifters....I think not.

I see the odd issue but love MCR and HMM like a family member:-) I like to meet and great with the editors of both magazines at various shows but these little inaccuracies never seen to bother me enough to bring it up. I love to see our hobby publicized and shared.

I agree the right expert is needed to edit or perfect each story, the article on my car for example was made available to me so I could edit it myself and from a phone conversation there were inaccuracies and a few statements I didn't like so I changed them so people would understand how well Al took care of my car and that they decided we were the family to buy their car.

There are some experts on sYc that so far I have only seen share exact, correct, information and these are the guys who should be checking stories for accuracy.

As told from friends and family that have gone thru the process of writing...

For the Record, I actually like MCR and the editor. I have every issue dating back to Classic Sixties...My comments are a generalization. There are cutting room floors for more than one media....I bet there are some good stories within them too!

I concur. I was the tech editor at MCR and Mopar Muscle from 1990-94 and sometimes I'd be floored by edits/corrections that were made by the people above me. I was, on more than one occasion, told that I should have been writing to a fifth grade reading level and the fact that I had a law degree meant that I was writing too far above the heads of my audience. Whether it was them making technical material no longer accurate or just plain &quot;correcting&quot; my correct grammer with incorrect grammer or slang, it drove me nuts.

Don't get me started on the phrase &quot;it needs restored.&quot; Or how Charger Daytonas had fiberglass nose cones... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif


...and when I finally met someone there that had a better talent at grammer and syntax...I married her! (We just had our 23rd anniversary a couple weeks ago). <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif


...and she is still correcting me!

It's even more fun to get two English majors in the same room and listen to them argue about proper usage of the Queen's English. Bottom line is good communication and who gives a damn how it is done. TAZ

In the latest issue, they published a letter from someone who corrected that but then went on to add more bogus info, doing more harm than good. They just don't check out these &quot;facts&quot;. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif

Yeah, those darn English grammar rules: especially the one about never ending a sentence with a preposition always got her all riled up...

...So I ended one sentence with a proposition and we wound up hitched in '93! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif

Yup. She was actually the late Paul Zazarine's Editorial Assistant. I remember him taking me aside and threatening to break my legs if I broke her heart. He was quite a character back in the day. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Paul and I were walking around the GM booth at SEMA around 1997 or so and we spotted a 502 engine on a stand that looked a bit different than the HO 502. It turned out to be a complete engine package for people that needed more power in their tow vehicles (IE: 92 thru 95 3/4 and 1 ton Chevys and GMCs). The package was to be complete with all necessary parts. I commented that Id love to see that in my 1993 Suburban. Paul said he would like to see an article written about it, and said I should write it. I replied that I wasn't a writer. He then told me it was &quot;simple&quot; and he would correct any gaffs! He also told me that he thought GM might participate and he would make the contact. About 2 months later a 502 appeared at my local Chevy dealer, and we did the switch. I wrote the article, with much help from Paul. It appeared in the January issue of &quot;Chevy Truck&quot; magazine. Rear wheel HP. went from 173 to 233. Soon after that I went a bit further with mods and pushed the HP up to around 330. Gas mileage actually went up to around 14/15mpg towing Red Alert and stuff in a 26 foot Pace trailer. None of it would have happened without Paul.
----Unfortunatly, GM never did offer the complete package, just the engine. My 502 now sits in another 1993 Suburban and has been modified a bit more with alum. heads and Fast inj. It has been engine dynode at 570hp and 650lb/ft. Pulls my 11,000 pound boat soooo easily!......Bill S
