Moving right along, what with all these birthday distractions and what not:laugh:, we move into my favorite part of work when I was a kid: BRAKE TIME!:burnout: Yes they are spelled differently, but the result is the same.....stuff stops! So what we see here is Ford's way of letting you know that not only can they screw up power steering, but brakes are also thrown into the "intern designed" group.
What goes on the inner fender below the master cylinder is a complex assortment of tubes, with no less than nine attachment points. What doesn't go here is your hand with a wrench when it leaks. After the 790lb 3ft wide Bigblock gets wedged in here.... along with a power brake booster the size of a cantaloupe.... there's no room for nothing! So brake bleeding comes first to ensure no leaks.
And since we're into all things messy, it's SMOG time too! Here's the complete system ready to go. Despite its complex looks, it's really not that complicated to install. The pump goes on and the rest goes...... well..... all that stuff attaches to the pump!:hmmm:
Since I'm gutting the pump and rendering the system useless, the heads are already blocked yet I need to mount the tubes. So how's that going to work? Simple. Cut the tubes and weld them to the plugs! Add a little Ford corporate blue paint and nobody knows the difference....but I ran out of paint so the touch up has to wait. Always something

Yes Sir, Eric! Thank you for the excellent work on my carb! I should be ready to fire it up soon. Meanwhile, I bled the brakes and as you can see here, everything but a wrench can go in this small little spot. So best to figure out the leaks now before that Mauritania anchor of a propulsion unit goes in :cool2:
So were there any leaks? I'm happy to report.....YES! All but one fitting leaked! Wait.... that's the wrong thumbs up. Actually, it's not. I knew it was going to happen so I wasn't disappointed when it did! :rolleyes2: Damn stainless lines....
I'll figure that out when I get back from this trip. Sometimes it's best to just walk away and let these things fix themselves. Sort of like going on a commercial break. Come back, "Hey, remember that whoositz that wasn't jiving with the statafrat? Amazingly.... it's working now! " So I'm taking the Millennial approach on this and blaming everyone but myself and expecting compensation and a trophy for my troubles. Hmmmm.....well.... maybe I'll just fix it when I get back. Or fly Mikey down!
After mounting up the steering wheel, I noticed a gap... like a step down... between the diameter of the hub and the diameter of the column. Since Steve (we were on a first named basis:tongue:) had the same wheel on his, I pulled out my vast Bullitt picture inventory and low and behold..... same gap! That lighted area on his that is right at the emergency flasher switch, and looks like an aluminum band, us sun glare on the column from the shade of the dash.... look just to the other side of that. I mean.... come on! Such authenticatedness I'm even striving for steering wheel crappy gaps! It's such a nice wheel that it's a shame to leather wrap it. Gotta fix that gap between the Convenience panel and the instrument bezel. Not liking that alignment. I can now hook a battery up and test everything! More to come....
Cheers

Ole Kwizz would probably whip up a custom made adapter to cure that problem with the ugggly gap at the steering column. Or just leave it like on the movie car. Different strokes for different folks.
So far it's turning into a cool car, by the way.

----Understand why you used that set, but I always ask guys who actually choose stainless over steel if they are ever going to use their car in bad weather. The answer is always the same; OH NO, Never, its a "very special car"!!! If we are friends I then tell them that they just threw some money away as well as made problems for themselves. The steel lines (of course) will probably out last even the younger guys on this website......Bill S
Great progress Dave. The brake distribution valve(s) look like something from the wheel well of the 737 "A" system hydraulics. Hard to believe only one fitting sealed, but I'm not surprised. Also, thanks for confirming that your car bites back. I was looking for cold medicine the other day and found 4 one-half full boxes of band aids. Mostly used from car and home project accidents.
Anyway, your work looks great. :)

So I used a combination of a few things to lift this Monitor turret up off the ground and guide it into the engine bay that's sized exactly 3/16th of an inch too big to allow it to fit. A 1500lb electric hoist, my 4-Post lift, the help of another set of hands, and several onlookers waiting for the (snap!) [KLUNK] "DANG IT!!". But luckily that last thing never happened:biggthumpup: I had to alter "Jigasaurus" to clear the air pipe on the drivers side, but I'm happy to report this thing worked flawlessly! Perfect angle... perfect clearance....and best of all.... easily removed after the engine is settled in.
It's getting closer! Shifter, clutch z-bar, and exhaust at the end of next week! Waiting on the fuel sender to come back, but I may use a temporary one just to get the car fired off.

So moving onto the exhaust, several options exist. What did Bullitt have? What was factory stock? What would I use to make it correct for both? Why does anyone care? :dunno: Welp.... glad you asked! First step was to see what the Bullitt car has. It was advertised as headers through straight pipes early on in the enthusiasts realm. Well, not so. Evidence against that, if you watch the movie scenes, is no low slung Grady Day-2 headers hanging down! :burnout:. What it's sporting is factory manifolds, the stock h-pipe, resonators, the transverse muffler removed, and straight pipes over the axle and exiting below the valance minus tips. So, basically, a stock system minus the tips and transverse muffler. :scholar:
My system is exactly that, but with a slight deviation. I want it reversible so it can be put back stock if necessary. After the resonators, it'll be a slip-fit, clamped straight pipe system that can be removed and the stock traverse system installed. :D So the biggest thing I need is a set of the stock Resonators. I called up Scott Fuller who makes dead-nuts-on reproductions of entire systems for Mustangs. But the price of the Resonators since they are one piece and welded to the intermediate and muffler connector pipes, ain't exactly cheap. :frown:
Scott had a run of Resonators made up, but they weren't to his standards. Not being happy with them, he decided to make his own to match NOS ones. You can see the very slight difference in the step down crispness of the edges of the ones he had made and the ones he now makes that are OE identical. Fortunately for me, he tossed out all of the old ones except for one pair. Best part? He's just giving them to me!:headbang: I bought a set of mounting flanges he makes and this will complete my factory looking exhaust perfectly. What a great guy!
So I'll start mounting up the exhaust next week when these come in. Be sure to tune in next week for such updates as, "Why didn't this work like I thought it would in my mind?" and, "Why am I even in this hobby to begin with? ":hmmm::biggthumpup:

A freshly redone original radiator from Bob at Glen-Ray radiators is just the thing to chill down this big block pony after chasing the Charger. Date Code and part number match up! I got some stuff bolted up yesterday then had to step out on another mission. Exhaust goes in next after the resonators show up. After that, the radiator and all fluids will go in. The following week I'll fix all the leaks of all the fluids that I just put in. Stay tuned... More to come as I review all the major papertowel brands to see which really is the quicker - soaker - upper of gear fluid:frown:

Although you probably wont need them there are absorbing towels available from marine supply stores for chemical spills on water, they do not absorb water, just oils, anti freeze etc.

This is exactly what Bullitt had: stock manifolds, stock exhaust minus the transverse muffler, and straight pipes out the back, no tips! This system is bolt on. So if the next owner wants to install the stock muffler with stock tailpipes and tips, it can be done with little effort. Exactly what I had in mind. I used the correct FoMoCo stamped clamps too! In preparations for start up, all fluids are in I'm happy to report... ready for initial fire up and cam break in! :headbang: I hooked up the battery to test everything. Aaaaaaannnd.....I got nothing. No power to anything. Back to square one. But knowing me and the idiot I am, I quickly realized that the bag of fuses on the workbench that was in my way when I was brewing my morning coffee, was exactly what I was missing! :smirk: So once installed I checked everything out. I was especially interested in that Convenience Group lighting panel. On initial turn of the key, the "Belts" light comes on then goes off after about 3 seconds. "Park" is for the parking brake being engaged. "Door" is when the door is not latched, and what I mean by that is not if the door is open, rather, its for when the door is only latched on the first click of the lock. Open, light is out. Push the door in and at the first click of the lock, the light illuminates. Push the door all the way in to the second "click"(now it's latched closed) and it goes out. "Fuel" is for the low fuel warning which is exactly what is preventing me firing this thing off. I called Bob's Speedometer, the place restoring my sending unit with low fuel thermostaticistorthingy, and he was reassembling it as I was on the phone with him. Now, I'm all for doing things twice, but since installing the fuel sending unit is something I'd really only like to do once, I'll wait until it shows up next week.

Looking at the Hero Car, the Hurst shifter boot is on back order right now for another day, so I used this no-name one in place just for now. The Samitron, author of the infamous, and gorgeous, Day 2 '69 L78 Chevelle thread in the members ride area, has blocked my PMs now since I was apperently too aggressive in insisting he send me his Hurst shift boot. But that's OK...you can't guard that car all the time at MCACN.... especially at happy hour! Mmmwwwaahahaaaaa..cough.... oh, sorry.

Jeeze, Guys! Thanks for the compliments! I've decided that when I put the car on display this November at this small, not very well known, Muscle Car get-together in the Chicago area...i think it's called McCRAKN or something like that..... I'm going to have a sign that reads "Built by SuperDave....Powered by Yenko.Net":headbang: Hmmmm... maybe not. That might set the Ford guys off in ways that would even make an NCRS guy envious! Sort of like when he's told that a bolt is wrong on his car!:burnout: Anywhooo.... moving on...
The factory speedo won't read right with the old gear in there since I've changed the rear gears and the tire size. Now, being a Math major in Elementary School, I ran a simple trigonomic function to figure out how many teeth I needed on the gear. To help others, you simply take the square root of the tire pressure, multiply 1/2 the diamerphrence, then divide by 7. That number, when inverted, gives you the reason that I just Googled it!
Picked up the remaining stainless trim to finish out the roof rails and glass installation, along with a pair of Koni Shock decals. Oh... and a new driver's side door regulator since I'm not happy with the smoothness of the original. The headliner goes in tomorrow! :cool2: Some detail items are the "Remove the Tie Down Brackets " decal behind the license plate and the "Battery O.K." Decal. I try and have the line worker's mindset in place when doing details like this along with inspection marks. Instead of being neat, think about their job: Mark it, put it on.... move along! Nobody aligned corners, made paint blops perfectly round, etc. So in other words...I don't try and work to hard at being sloppy. Sort of just do it.... it'll look more authentic in my book.
Also had these center cap spacers made. A friend of mine runs a CNC shop and we banged these out from scrap aluminum. McQueen's original wheels were 15x6. Mine are 15x7 and as such, the offset is about 1/2" different. Looking at Hero Car pics, you can see how far that center cap sticks out. I want that look and this should do it. Overkill? Ha! When have I done anything underkill?!? Is that even a word?:dunno: More tomorrow when I mount them up! :3gears:

Headliner installation.... always fun. Throw in an overhead console and it's doubley fun! But its in. The center cap spacers worked great and put them right where I wanted them to by inside the wheel!
Doors are all together, so what's left? Glad you asked:
1. Fuel sending unit
2. 8-Track radio and door speakers
3. Glass
That's it! And that'll wrap it up for this week. Tune in next week for "Where's my damn sending unit?!" And "Who knew a windshield could break so easily!?":hmmm:

Just watched a new episode of Jay Leno's Garage where he got to drive the original Bulitt Mustang. The owner was there and told the story of how his father came to own the car and what he paid for it back in 1974.
Pretty cool story; Dave you're doing an AMAZING job with yours. Thanks for taking the time to bring us along for the ride.

Thanks for the kind words! I think this build is touching a lot of car guys and gals and that's what makes this so much fun! Yes, lot of movie cars out there. Lots of Bullitt tributes too.... but I'm trying to "one up" the masses in my details. And, not to mention, would like to think I could do the MCA proud in a judging critique! :burnout: Looking forward to having you guys sit in the car and enjoy it too! Just no reverse burnouts....I think Bob would ban me!:frown:
I'm happy with the center cap look but want those front wheels out a little more out of the wells, so a 1/4" spacer should do it. The studs are plenty long to handle it.
The doors contain no less than three trim pieces and with everything in place along with the roof rail weather stripping, they shut tight! I picked up the aircleaner from the chrome shop before I headed out. Glass installed Thursday!

There are many mysteries in life. Lots of lore, strange sightings, and so much left undiscovered. Barn finds all over, a Declaration Of Independence found behind a hunk of drywall, Elvis in the lobby at any given hotel in Vegas.:smirk: All amazing! But of all the rare things to see out there, I'd say the top three in my mind are Bigfoot, my wallet filled with cash, and an air cleaner S-tube and exhaust manifold heat shroud for a 68 Mustang 390 GT. :frown: I've officially now eliminated two of the three: the air cleaner S-tube is in my possession and as such, a wallet full of cash is now gone.:thumbsdown:

Hmmm... after the Bullitt? :dunno:Lunch in Chicago? Welp,* several things on the deck. Yep, house/ shop/ stables will be starting in the next month or so, and since I only have the small rental shop right now, no car builds until next year. Oh... they'll be tinkering and such on the Mighty D150 Ram, and I need to fabricate a custom entry gate to the new Ranch with a set of wings in the gate, but no major build project until next year. But fear not! My plan on a follow up to the Beater Bee is just about coming to fruition! Yes... it'll even be right in line Alphabetically with the Beater Bee. :biggthumpup:As with all my builds, you'll learn stuff you never knew you didn't know or needed to know, or even really cared to know. I think the only thing that trumps the circumference of the 390 chrome air cleaner lid is the Chrome Dome from the mid 60s Hemis! Soooooooo much chrooooome!:eek2:
I was fortunate that the car had the original jack and hardware hidden in the trunk. Trying to stay 100% correct, the F70 WSW Firestone mounted up on a stock 14x6 styled steel wheel trims the trunk out nicely. My car has the Reflective Group which is a reflective "C" stripe on the side of the car and the center part of the wheels painted in a reflective coating. Like a stop sign has. The spare, however, is not painted with the coating. My original spare didn't have that in it. Just Argent paint. Tomorrow the glass goes in! :3gears:

Undercoating time, and you know what that means! It's just about done! :3gears: Mustangs had sound deadener sprayed in the wheel wells and interior quarter panel, and then they were painted. The wheel wells in the back, therefore, are body color. The front wheel wells were not painted since body color stopped at the firewall so that remained black. When the dealer got a hold of it, the salesguys got involved and said "You know, for an extra $2.50, we can throw that undercoating stuff on the chassis which will make everything look cool, cause our mechanics to curse and scream when they have to work on anything under the car, and 50 years from now, will make some dude really unhappy when they try to restore this car to Concours Gold.... whatever that is? ":dunno::grin:
With the dealer undercoating, the rear wells got it and so did everything else like the floor pans, gastank, and all the lines and such. Some only got wheel wells and that's the look I went for. Love this stuff and its textured and ready to spray through a Shutz gun. I got it from RestoRick. Awesome stuff! More to come

Not in the least! It's all part of the process. :cool2: each step adds to the"rolled of the line" look and is fun to replicate.
Happy to report the Stang roared to life! The original 390 belched and gulped, then grumbled and screamed ready to take on some streets of San Fran! Eric... that carb was tuned perfectly!! Thank you so much!!:biggthumpup: I prefilled the bowls and it fired right up. A syringe is the ticket for that and we just happened to have an extra one laying around from when we had to feed the newborn kitty. I'm pretty sure it was the cat formula that made it fire up so fast based on how crazy our cat is today!:hmmm::thumbsdown:
And of course, the brand new start solenoid took a dump right after I shut it down after the cam break in.... But fear not! New one on hand and ill post up a video tomorrow! How'd I figure that out? Simple.... key off.... car still runs:dunno: Pulled the coil wire off to stop the car running. When I hooked the battery back up, I tested the poles on the solenoid and low and behold, the "I" (ignition) terminal was getting volts. So that contact fused in the solenoid itself. Good times.
So tomorrow I'll put the new one in and fire it up again! Woohoo! Two parts left: Radio and Steering wheel (getting leather wrapped) and here's the heat shield and s-tube for the air cleaner ready to go in.
More to come.....

Low fuel light was the last light to function on the Convenience Panel and now they all work. Oh... and the Brake pressure light on the dash is fixed. That was a simple connector issue. Engine bay done. The front shocks are Koni, like McQueen had too. Still visible on the Hero Car today in the engine bay photos. What I may do is install the same open element air cleaner that's on it now so the look is identical. But that may be at a later date. Love the stock big chrome lid!

Thanks guys! The car originally had back-up lights. McQueen stripped the car off all things brand oriented and along with that, a few extra things were done to clean the car's image up from a factory GT. His idea was that a lowly detective didn't drive a flashy car, so along with the GT grille being removed, the rocker moldings were painted, back up lights removed, emblems, and side mirror were all removed. The side mirror he used was a smaller mirror and mounted lower on the door, as well as being painted. Two rear valances were also used: a GT and a non-GT. In addition to that, in a few scenes of the chase, the antenna was moved back to the quarter panel. It's not like I watched the chase scene ninety times or anything...
My original goal was to make it look like the hero car right now with regular side sills and side mirror. I think I may be done!

Thanks guys. Yes, the moldings change the look. Whoever the new owner will be can decide if they want them back on or not.
Going to take the car out on the highway for some driving filming later this month.
Cheers

OK Dave, you got on to Sam for not posting updates, so where are your updates? Is the Mustang completely finished? 8 track done? What about the next project? Have you bought it yet?

Mmmmm.....I see  In answer to the questions, the 8-Track will be sent out next week. The Bullitt is 100% finished, of course, minus polishing of scratches I seem to be putting in it as I drive it. I have 25 miles on it since done and so far, no issues. This car seems to really inspire you to thrash the crap out if it! I definitely need some Go-Pros!!:headbang:
Happy to report the next project has been acquired and waiting on paperwork/ transport before I post up. Fear not! Once here, another thread will be started!!:burnout: It's going to be the follow-up to the Beater Bee, same category, with an equally catchy name! It'll leave you speechless.....as in...."Why does he buy such pieces of crap to start with!?":confused2::thumbsdown: Hopefully you guys will enjoy it as much as you enjoyed my other build threads.
Cheers:beers:

Hello gents! 8-track has been sent out to a fellow in Ohio that has a good reputation from a fellow forum member, so with some luck, I'll have it back in a few months fully operational. Just need a good 8-Track to have in there ready to go!:3gears:

Get an 8 track of IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA by Iron Butterfly.17 minutes and 5 seconds of 1968 psychedelic rock! Will really test the stereo separation in your newly refurbished player's speakers, especially during the long drum break!

Just wondering, when this car is at MCACN, is it going to be a super nice GT Mustang or is it going to be a super nice Bullitt Mustang?

Looks like the Stang pulled in some big bucks at Mecum this weekend! $123,750 (with commission). That's gotta be a record price. Well done, Sir! That really shows the quality of your work.

Thanks guys! It was a very exciting auction meeting several bidders who only flew in to bid on my car. Flattering to say the least!! Extremely mpressed on the outcome and how the car was received is an understatement!!! :eek2:
With the new house build going on, it was the right time to sell. It'll be sad to miss being a part of MCACN this year (just waaaaay too much going on), but we'll be there next year and of course, in 2020 unveiling the Crusty Cuda!!!
Cheers:beers:

Unless you auction that one off before the show, you rat b$%#@^d!!! (yeah, of course I'm jealous as hell - I love Plum Crazy Cudas but have never had the chance to own one) :-)
So what's taking you so long? - you should be tearing into that car right now.....we're waiting...

Are you kidding? If I break TWO contracts with the Bobatolah, I'll be ostrichized, flamborized, and flat out deniedicated from ever returning to MCACN!:eek2: You should have seen him when I told him I had to sell, (cue Godfather music) "What have I done to deserve such disrespect? Someday, you will come to me with a favor...." Ahem, well...I think you's is picking up what i'm throwing down.
Right in the beginning stages of a house/ shop/ barn build/ move/ relocation man! Where you been??:hmmm: I should be starting on the Cuda in the Spring!!
