View Full Version : Andy's 66 Caprice LS Conversion Upgrade
kwhizz

I met Andy at the Elkhorn Swap meet a year ago and we were talking about the LS swap into the 66 Impala Convert.....We got hooked up again in early summer this year and were talking about the Ackermann issues these "B" body cars have........Ended up Andy had the GM Service Bulletin from 1966 resolving these issues .........Anyhow......Here we go again........LOL......
Staring point is a pretty nice rust free Caprice.........Putting in a LS3 480 HP/4L70E GM connect and cruise set-up just like we put in Gary and Keith's cars.....

Will you do LS conversion on any GM car?

The trans tunnel is tight in these cars and getting the cooling lines out to the radiator is simplified by getting rid of the factory fittings and going aftermarket with trans rated rubber hose......

The next issue is the Holley 302-1 pan contacts the front cross member.......I made up some engine mount adaptor plates to raise the engine a 1/2" to resolve that issue...............

I think this has been posted before, but do you mind giving a ballpark estimate of an LS-conversion (garden variety LS, nothing crazy like an LSA) in a first gen Camaro if you know? Just curious, thanks.

10-04-2016, 10:55 PM
I've done several of these conversions a basic conversion involves connect and cruise package. 11k for 430 hp. 2k for aftermarket accessory drive 1k for cooling system upgrade 6-800 for fuel system upgrade 400 for new driveshaft 300 for air induction that's around 15,500 in parts add another 1k for incidentals that's $16,500 roughly. Plus labor to do the switch.

Engine and Trans (GM Connect and Cruise) LS3 480HP / 4L70E trans set-up around $11K....Then you have the extra's.....A/C ....Radiator.....Etc....

Whizz, was wondering about the fuel hose your using. I looked at that before deciding to use plastic heard so much about hoses deteriorating after years due to alcohol? in fuel
I bought this kit and tried a couple fittings on the lines and simple ehough and since like OE should be durable

I believe Ken is using a "lined" hose, that is ethanol compatible. Its what I used on my 59 when I installed the LS1.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) -- synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene. Brand name of PTFE-based formulas is Teflon -- thanks to DuPont which discovered the compound in 1938.

The leg is now getting back to normal and things are starting to move again.......Didn't say anything yesterday, but if you look at the picture below, you will see the front Chinese header bolt is missing......I was using a air ratchet to draw them in and the bolt as it was running down just snapped off.........Talk about getting pissed........That was a signal to go take a Nap.......It was in an accessible position, but getting the drill started in the center of the bolt to drill it out in an area that wasn't the best to see what you were doing.........went to the shop today and thought it thru....Made a bushing to go into the header flange with the metric tap drill size in it.......put it in and it centered the drill perfectly.....drilled thru the bolt and retapped the hole.......problem solved......

Andy, the Hydraboost setup I purchased is from Hydratech. The unit is built specific to your car. As far as brakes go, I've got a pretty basic front disk conversion kit that I installed on my `65 years ago. I do not remember who I got it from. With the cam that comes in the 480hp LS3 there's just not enough vacuum to use a vacuum brake booster. The Hydrabooster should solve the brake issue.
njsteve
10-16-2016, 08:15 PM
Yeah, that looks like they modify and adapt an existing application to fit your setup. The actual boost unit itself looks just like the one in my '95 diesel Suburban. I had to replace the 'burb's unit a month ago after 134,000 miles of good service, and only because it started dripping from a rear seal.

Great looking car and love the swap threads. Im sure you know this but in the past when doing LS swaps I would back fill the engine through the upper rad hose to help with getting the t-stat to open and allow circulation due to air being trapped in the system. Had it happen more than once with an engine going over 220 and it not opening and it would work every time.

Time to get Andy's car cleaned up and finished.........Spent the day yesterday getting the Dakota Digital modules installed and wired ..............Todays project was to get the Dash cleaned, disassembled, and get the new Gauge assy installed, programmed and installed.......After getting that finished, I started the car and let it run and get up to temperature......Fan Relays kicked the fans on just like they are supposed to.....One of the little issues that pop up every now and then was the neutral safety switch.......This one was broken and going from the early trans to the overdrive created a safety issue........So......I informed Andy the switch was bad and I installed jumper wires to by-pass the old switch...After thinking about it and reading the instructions for the Dakota gear shift position sensor module, I installed a relay and wired it per the instructions..........LOL......Don't need no stinking mechanical switch...... ...Andy is coming to pick it up and drive it home on Saturday....

Love turn-downs like that, tucked up almost out of sight. Very sanitary.

Drove it for the first time to get the A/C system charged yesterday..........the car rode beautify, But....now I remember why God invented Disc Brakes and quick ratio steering boxes.....LOL.....Andy already changed the steering linkage in car over to the 67 revision so there wasn't any Ackermann issues.....Maybe I'm just used to driving my wife's cars so I am a little spoiled.........Andy is coming tomorrow to pick up this "Heap"........He still has some tweaking to do over the winter, I know he will be upgrading the brakes etc............Hopefully he will continue the thread with the future mod's............
