I was told that this may be the place i can gain info on this block. There are no casting numbers that i can find. It is a sleeved block. does have a fuel pump boss butt is also a drysump block. 4.44 bore spacing. A year ago i sent over 100 pictures of this to Guinn Engineering, And then he broke off all correspondence. Any info would be helpful!

In 69 they ran a 3.47 stroke for 430 CI then in 70-71 ran a 3.76 stroke for 465 CI, You can also see the four extra hold-down bosses in the lifter valley. There also should be oil cooler provisions on the oil filter boss. That would be an early block that used liners cast from 356 alloy after 72 they were cast with no liners and was cast from 390 alloy

Calls for a definition of terms...Jim Hall was an early tester of the ZL 1 engine for GM in his CanAm car and Lemans type car. Those were originally liner blocks as I recall. What were generally referred to as CanAm blocks were developed by Reynolds in partnership with McLaren Racing using the high silicon aluminum as used in the Vega. I had one of those in my garage several years ago..modified for a roller cam.Chevy continued to sell the lineredZL1, then in 1974 gave,Don Yenko the right to produce and sell them as GM wanted to discontinue them.

Need better pictures.
There was a ZL1 block for sale 4-5 years ago at Racing Junk that they have had larger pistons in. 4.500.If my memory is correct. It was damaged and without Sleeves That was a 1997 Block.

I have internal engineering documents dated Feb 29, 1968 showing the following aluminum 427's equipped with sleeves:

19950-17-A (first development engine, installed in Corvette 78027 for F.I. development)
19950-17-J (Laguna Seca race and Riverside Practice, #3, #4, #6 resleeved and machined)
19950-17-K (ran LeMans for 14 hrs, approx 1000 miles, showed gasket burning on #1 cyl)

Not sure how these numbers correspond to the ones listed above, but I believe these were development blocks.

I will take some pictures tomorrow and post them. Guinn was convinced this was one of the early experimental blocks because of the crude casting and no numbers anywhere. Not quite sure what happened to him. Also, the fact that it was a dry sump block with the fuel pump boss and liners. Will post pics tomorrow!

Post more Pictures.
That looks like 0-294550 427 CanAm
But someone has modified the block.
Newer threaded Frost plugs and has been machined on the outside of the block.

Hoovy88

Now again, According to Guinn, The machining on the side of the block could very well be a fingerprint of what chassis it was in. Each team machined the blocks however they needed for clearance and fitment issues. For what that's worth anyway. Will post more soon.

These blocks are not worth the crazy prices as ZL1 blocks that have the VIN number. Maybe someone wants to build a ZL1 Copy and are interested.
They are some Corvette guys that like these Engines.
Sadly, if the casting numbers are ground off

I’m curious if you have learned any further information on this block? It appears that I have what seems to be the exact same block. It is very possible that mine might have a connection to the McLaren team out of Livonia area. Mine has 454-02 and 23 stamped on the oil pan lip closest to the oil filter area. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

This is the front engine pad area. It appears that the block has had some history. I wonder if the initials A.C. are known to anyone.

I just joined and participating in some of these Aluminum Development threads. Yes I know exactly where this block was used. Too bad something famous like this can't be reunited to it's home car.

So ZL-1 Engine #1 was being pushed from the CEC White Room to the Hot Test Room, which was just 175 feet away. The guy pushing it, stopped to use a vending machine and when he walked back around the corner into that hallway, that engine was gone/stolen. Because of GM clout, even the FBI came in. So Engine #2 was heavily escorted, as #1 has never turned up.

So Engine #3 was the first engine that made it into Zora Duntov's care. They had disbanded his Engine Development team, just prior to ZL-1, so was waiting on his first ZL-1 from the Chevrolet Engine team where Frincke was transferred. Thus this got fitted to what would become known as the ZL-1 Super Vette, made famous in an article named 10 Second Ride or whatever it was named. Not getting that title off the top of the brain. So they were using this engine to push the limits on the capability of the platform, this particular engine #3 getting modifications. Then this very unit was built up into the 454 #2 config, and installed in the famed LT-2 car, that was used for the Press showing, to demonstrate 1/4 mile capability.

I have tried to accumulate names of guys in these different departments, but I have that data loose in notes all over the place. So don't know who A.C is, without looking into it.

This is a treat to see these stampings on this very block!

I love stuff like this, like another famed block popped up that I saw belonging to the famed 1966 Penske L88 race car. What is in the car now belongs in the Penske L88 Grand Sport, as some of these guys that do restoration find something rare and it doesn't make it back to the right car!

Yes, the car started with the ZL-1, and that was built into the 454 LT-2.

It must have been the replica that was at the Super Car Reunion a few years ago. It had a very different sound. It did not sound like a big block Chevy.

Thank you very much. My head is sort of spinning with the information. I have so many questions that to most people would seem awfully stupid, but I’m one for the details. I was actually jumping between sites researching some other blocks I have, (I’m certain they will be of equal interest) when I realized you had responded to my inquiry. I’m going to take a guess that the number stamped underneath the 454-02 had something to do with how you determined this information. Would that be correct? That happens to be the rabbit hole I was going down last night when researching other blocks I have. I’m trying to put together a timeline on these things. PS.. Be prepared for several questions. Thanks again, -Joe
