View Full Version : So.... how fast have you driven on the street?
I admit to a few excesses in my younger days.... way out away from traffic, flat road etc. All the stuff to make is "safe" (obviously a relative term).
Anyway, this guy may have pushed the envelope, and he may have been in the City limits; that turnpike runs right through OKC.

I really hate say but I guess near 125+ in my 1974 455 Trans Am in the early 80s and around 130+ in my wife's Turbo 1988 300ZX. Stupid things we did as youngsters.

Does the Autobahn count as a street? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif
I know my wife's Infiniti Q45 will shift into 4th gear at 140mph. Stayed in it for a bit more but backed out when it was just about the width of the needle before 150!
That was 15-20 years ago and around the Philadelphia area. I'll never forget seeing the guy in the new Trans-Am next to me mouth the words "What is that thing?" around 125 as I walked past him!

About 125 in a late-night street race on a four-lane boulevard. Won and then got pulled over. I was polite and respectful so no arrest and a ticket for only 65 in a 35. 1981. Otherwise 130 on a Bay Area bridge late at night giving a girl a fast ride she begged for. 1984. (Looked down to see zero oil psi so into neutral and key off. Oil pump base screws had come loose and pressure was going out through the gap between the pickup base and pump body.)
Oh, and 165 on a '93 Honda CBR900RR that I had to have. Smooth as silk at that speed.
Oh, and 145 (limiter) in my '04 WRX STi that I had to have. Also smooth as silk at that speed.
Guessing if we had a way to post anonymously, we would get more responses.
Bill: "165 on a '93 Honda CBR900RR that I had to have. Smooth as silk at that speed."
Wow, I am really scared of speed on two wheels. 1983, I had a GS 1100E. I know it is nothing compared to today's hyper bikes, but was a big deal at the time. Capable of 0-100-0 all in ten seconds.
I found out the hard way, it was not "smooth as silk" at 130. Handlebars started shaking violently (6 inches each direction) and didn't quit shaking until I got her down to about 80.
Sold the bike back to the guy I had purchased it from the next day. He still has it. I have even ridden it a few times, but never at high speed.
Quit riding bikes all together about 6 years ago after my brother was almost killed on one. Too many INATTENTIVE drivers out there texting, talking of just asleep at the wheel.

Yeah, at 165 on the 900RR, chin on the tank, it was going just fine until I imagined a deer pouncing out of the trees (Black Hills of SoDak) and I braked it down to 65. It was a wide section of two-lane, newly paved, with trees about 100 feet away from the road on both sides. Young and dumb. I too quit riding because I moved to suburbia and the close calls were just too many.

135 in a '72 Z/28, in 1979, street racing my best friend, in a 35 MPH zone.
The officer knew where he lived and pulled in the driveway a few minutes after us, while were still standing there laughing.
He lost his license for two months and I got a $150 fine and lost 6 demerit points. Then I had to have a meeting with the Ministry of Transportation, as I had now lost 13 of a possible 15 points.
They let me keep my license as the guy figured I would not make it the two years required to get my points back.
125 in a '69 Z/28, in 2000, going up a bridge, spanning a shipping canal. The car would have gone faster, but the front end was getting loose on the road, so I backed off.
I would not never entertain that today, as it is considered stunt driving today and your car is immediately impounded. Then you have to deal with the fine and the increased insurance costs, if anyone will even insure you.
That is how I ended up at the dragstrip. I needed a safe place to play.

155 across the desert near Alamogordo, NM and once up the 5 through LaJolla going against a 1st gen in my 93 Z28. After I left him I just couldn't take my foot off the pedal lol. Actually had the cruise control set at 130mph for a short while going across the desert after we left 29 Palms once just because. My Hayabusa I used to have was governed at 180mph... Just stupid fast is an understatement. And guys put turbos and nitrous on them!

Some time in the late 1980's if memory serves me;
My street toy at the time was a 1975 Monza hatchback. Under the hood was an 11-1 355 with an Erson 320HLM solid lifter cam (250°/250° @ .050", 320°/320° adv. .534"/.534" lift on a 108° LSA), a pair of 370 casting double hump heads, and old style Edelbrock Torker intake (looked a lot like the Scorpion) and a 780 Holley and a pair of Hooker headers.
Behind this was a Turbo 350 with a Vega converter and a stock 7.5" rear end with a posi and 2.91 gears. Don't let the gearing # throw you off, the tires on the car were only 24" tall (13" rims after all). For reference--it turned ~2500 RPM @ 60 mph.
I beat that thing like I hated it--turned it 7500+ rpm on a daily basis and topped 8K on the Sun Super Tach II on more than one occasion. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif
One night a friend and I were coming back from "cruising the circle" in Greenville, which was a town about 30 miles North of me. Access to Greenville was via a State route which is straight as piss and has several lengthy sections with nothing but fields on either side. You should get where I'm going with this...
Long story short, I turned the car loose and let it eat. The car had a 120 mph speedometer which was buried well before I lifted...(I don't know who GM was trying to kid with that--the OE 262 in the car was lucky to keep up with traffic! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif ) When I lifted, the tach was just nosing past 6800 RPM and was still rapidly climbing.
MPH X rear gear X 336 / tire height = rpm
155 MPH X 2.91 X 336 / 24" = 6314 RPM
160 MPH X 2.91 X 336 / 24" = 6518 rpm.
Taking into account the slip of that Vega converter, I'd say that was somewhere in the ballpark.
Good times...very, very good times.
" stock 7.5" rear end"
And how much longer did that rear live?

145 plus mph between Pleasant Plains and Ashland, IL with Matt Murphy riding shotgun. We were driving Annie's #44 Phase III ZL1 and my 1st run to Ashland was about 130 mph and he promptly chewed me out and said it's top end was around 175/180 (not sure I believe that) so quit being a pussy. The return trip was about 145 plus mph (so I guess I'm a pussy). I had complained to him about some lifter noise and he wanted to hear it run so run we did.

I picked up my father in laws Ferrari 599 from the dealership in long valley, n.j. I was at 180 on the garden state parkway. I was able to drive that fast because I picked it up at 10 pm. I was only at that speed for a few seconds as the nj state trooper was way behind me with his lights on. He was ready to arrest me he was so mad. He was more upset when I told him I was best friends with a trooper a couple of steps below the top position. He wrote me up a broken taillight, although it was not broken. I didn't argue. I was wrong...but it was fun.it amazes me what formula one and stock car racers do for a living on the edge. Great reflexes!

Which one? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/cool.gif
(I went through 3 or 4 rear ends in that car, but this was back when H bodies were still readily available in the junkyards and a complete boneyard posi rear end was only ~$100.00. The last one came out of a red, white & blue Spyder)
*EDIT*
I found some old pics, sorry about the quality.
When I first bought the car, still had the anemic 262 in it.
2nd pic is during body work.

I did 110 mph in the rain in a viper that I rented in Vegas years ago(with no landau top)...never rains in the desert?? bull !!! at 110 mph the rain does not enter the car !!!
140 in Hawaii in a Ferrari vert. ..only one highway in Hawaii !!! Nothing sounds better than the sound of a Ferrari motor waking up a few feet behind you !!
Also drove 145 in a jag vert in Florida a few years ago. I actually videod with one hand so I could see the speedo and the road in the video.
And last year in a Lambo vert. that I rented in Vegas.... although, I've driven dragsters and nascar cars, I lost my nerve at 165 on the street...other cars come up on you very fast at that speed !!

I was pulled over going 108 mph in my '83 Toyota Celica GT. Took the cop about 2 miles to catch up. Somehow he let me go with a court appearance. Since I was too afraid to tell my dad, I went to court by myself with no money. The judge took my licence on the spot and told me I could have it back when I came with money to pay the ticket. I just drove around without a licence until I could afford to pay the ticket.

----Summer of 68 my cousin had his Cobra (serial #3003) back together after going thru another set of head gaskets. We went out for a test and he took it up to 165mph. About that time we passed under an overpass and a state trooper (Ohio) was tanding on the bridge waving his finger at us. We took the next exit and went back to his garage and pulled the door down.....Bill S

165 in my ZR1. Car felt really stable & in control. Backed off because other cars were ahead in the distance. Passing is the really scary thing when your going 100 mph faster than the other vehicles.
Many years ago ....... before I got smart......
202 MPH on a Suzuki Hyabusa on the 241 toll road ..... and 187 on a Suzuki GSXR 750 off of Ortega HWY.... both on film.
I no longer own any motor cycles and my daily driver is a Dodge R/T Van. However I have .... allegedly drivin my 2016 Porsche 911 S real fast from time to time, but nothing like when I road motorcycles. I actually rarely exceed the speed limit anymore and am suprised how fast people drive on the hwy.

120 mph on Route 1 Trevose/Pendell in a '71 Nova, 250 straight 6, powerglide and 3.08 gear in an open rear; once, and only once! I think it took about 1.5miles to get up to that speed (partially down hill). The speedo was bouncing all over the place, and the car was light in the front and tough to manage. I pegged it, mission accomplished - never again, drag strip only....

Yep, down the hill past Neshaminy mall or in the other direction past Langhorne speed shop down the hill. We used to take my buds 70 SCJ Torino on the on ramp by Langhorne speed shop and go wot down the hill towards the mall and bury the speedo all the time <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

The most memorable high speed run was in my '78 Trans Am, going 130 over the New Stanton bridge on I-70 heading back to Rt 51, coming back from some place I probably shouldn't have been, in the middle of the day. It was fun until the front of the T/A started floating around and then it was time to shut it down. Stupid kids.
