The trim tag has been off the car, rivets not pierced .

Which is the reason I'm asking if it's real?

Here is a tag to compare. I apologize if this belongs to anyone here.

The tag looks good to me. But I'm not an expert.

I'm no expert which is why I'm asking but I think based on the the other tag Steve posted and the alignment with the vin it's real but has been off the car. The engine looks to be correct but the trans and rear are not original which begs the question why go through the trouble of faking the engine and not the remaining drivetrain?

In order to evaluate the engine stamps, all paint needs to be removed from the pad.

I'd say the tag is a fake. There are differences in the 2 tags for sure.

Check hidden vs tag.

If this were a real L78 with matching motor and frame off restored would it be for sale @ $ 59k at a dealer? That should be the first red flag.

Hey, and it's even one of the ultra rare ones with a turbo diesel <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

why not look at a car that's listed forsale here on <span style="font-style: italic">this</span> website vs that..
Its not a 67, but for the money you are looking to spend, and paperwork, it looks like a safer move.
Put some blue streak slicks on the back, a stinger hood, and its a cool day 2 car that would rival the red one we have been looking at recently the muscle car review cover <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

The 67 was a car a friend was looking at and I called into question the tag but good advice.

The vin of the car is body style 12437 but the body style on the trim tag is 12637.
That would be a big flag for me. That tag doesn't look good to me. FWIW.

No, they both end in 37 which is coupe. 4 vs 6 is for the custom interior which is unique only to the trim tag.

fake tag, but they are getting better and harder to spot without careful comparison to known real tags.

That one looks legit. The one tag that is fake does have a subtle difference.

I'm no expert, but I don't like the 6 on the first tag compared to my real car..although one month apart on build date).I guess the dyes could have changed..

This car is still listed for sale. We were looking to buy it until we found this post disputing the cowl tag and engine stamping, as well as some other things that dispute this car's legitimacy. I have also had someone look at those two items. He stated that he cannot tell for sure on the engine stamping unless the paint is removed, but that the cowl tag appears to be a reproduction, just as others have stated above.
This car is listed on Hemmings.com, and the attached picture was on there, showing blue paint on the car. When I questioned the owner about the blue paint, he claimed that the "restorer" painted the car red, and that it had always been red, since the current owner has owned the car. However, he also told me that this, and other pictures of the car on a lift were in fact taken in his shop. So, he admitted that the car was blue during his ownership. He has also now removed the picture from the hemmings post... seems like he is covering his tracks to me.
There are too many things that he has claimed that have proven to be false. I just wanted to post this, so that any future interested buyers may find this post and avoid being scammed.

I am far from an expert on this subject, but what jumps out at me is that the tag looks 1 day old not 50 years old. They should have given it some "patina".
