still looking
Are 68 and 69 assy line pans the same?
68 still had the 7/8 hex drain plug, and I THINK they went to the 9/16 on late 69's.
But, I don't know if the rest of the pan was the same for 68 / 69. The windage tray is the same. but don't know about the pan.
Hmmmm. Virgin drain oil plug hole? That could be misconscrewed.
I take it to mean it has never been stripped and heli coiled, not to mean that it never had a plug put in it. Not trying to be disgusting. Just clarifying.

And is there a way to identify one? I happen to look up in my shed attic (have not been up there in quite a while) and found more SBC oil pans then I thought I had. Not sure what they are all from, so any clue would be helpful.
Can't help with over all ID. I can help with id of 1969 assembly line vs the over the counter pans. Here is a write up I did a few years ago over on TC:

I believe the 68 and 69 pans are the same with the exception of the drain plug. What is meant by virgin oil plug hole is no reworks for stripped drain plug. If you find any pans you suspect to be an original shoot me a picture through text as my number is in this thread. Thanks

The pan you have is not a 68 or 69 pan. the oil drain plug on yours is on the very bottom but thanks for taking the shots. I sent you a picture of a 69 pan to show you the difference.

Now I am curious, so what is different about the drain plugs? I have about 3-4 oil pans in the shed (all older vintage), did not get up there this weekend. I have two 69 engines in the garage to compare to as well (1 early, 1 mid)
Pics here would be helpful! Wayoutz, you in south jersey? Not too far from me in the scheme of things :)
I believe 68 and earl 69 used a drain plug with 7/8 hex. Late 69 and on used the 9/16 hex.
Same hole, same thread.
There are 1000's of the over the counter pans (as set out in the comparison I referenced above) but very few assembly line correct pans out there.

Well, all my pans are 69s with the smaller head plug. Only one has the two step bottom, but it has the 69 baffle plate.
Good luck on the search!

I can pull the pan out and send you a pic. I have to get the pans out to sell at E-town anyways.

Yea that's not the correct pan for the Z28. This is
Correct. Those two rails on the side match up loosely with the windage tray that is attached via special main bearing bolts with shouldered studs on top of the hex.
I MAY have an extra 68 - 69 pan, but will be a while before I can look.
