I have a friend that has a 69 396 Chevelle with a 4 speed that has bad clutch chatter. So I replaced clutch and pressure plate and had the flywheel resurfaced. Still had chatter so I replaced flywheel still has chatter and I also replaced motor mounts. I replaced pilot bushing each time. Anyone ever encountered this?

I am thinking if the trans mount and or if the crossmember were loose could contribute to the condition you are experiencing.

I have had similar problem.....after numerous and multiple attempts with much frustration ....all my problems went away when I replaced my none GM flywheel with new GM flywheel.

Every scenario is different.

Good luck,

Dan

If the bellhousing is not in absolute perfect alignment -- clutch chatter may result. If push gets to shove ... change the bellhousing. TAZ

I checked u joints, I wondered about bell housing but it's the original one and if it's off it would when car was new this is a 55,000 mile car.

Had the same problem with a 69 Chevelle I owned.
The new owner bought it knowing that it had clutch chatter, then chased the problem in a similar fashion as you.
One thing that helped was to replace all the rear control arm bushings.
Not sure if anything else was done after that.

Rick,

I still think the problem exists :-(

What clutch disc are you using?

Also, you may need to center up the bellhousing with offset dowl pins. It can be time consuming but well worth the effort.

Rick,

I still think the problem exists :-(

It's my understanding that the problem was resolved and has not reoccurred but I'm sure Bill could update us if anything has changed.

So it sounds like I need to replace rear control arm bushings.

Oh brother, does this ever sound familiar :( I would say to check your rear control arm bushings just for good measure, but the problem slowly came back on my car even after the rear control arm bushings were replaced.

I did everything listed here as a possible solution (except replacing the bellhousing), and a whole lot more. Although I am very reluctant to declare that my problem is fixed, it appears that it is. I haven't driven it enough since the last repair attempt was completed, as there have been a few other issues that I have been working on.

Even if it is indeed fixed, the bad news is that I am never going to know a definitive cause for the problem....it's a long story  So, although I wish I could point to some specific thing to tell you to check.....I can't :(

70TA,

Perhaps a little more background on the car would be helpful. Is this a problem that cropped up all of a sudden, or is it something that slowly got worse over time? Any changes made to the car just before the problem started?

Is there an actual shudder w/ clutching action or just a noise?
Was the problem there immediately after parts replacement or how long after did it appear?
Fork and trans input shaft both inspected and Ok also absolutely no leaking oil or gear lube?
What were the face surfaces of FW + PP + Disc both sides also Pilot upon inspection each time apart?
Was the replacement flywheel brand new or resurfaced used?
I didn't see a release brg. on your parts list but expect it's new too?
Don't discount misalignment possibilities and best check detail dimensions also runout of FW and trans input when apart next.
Good luck!
:beers:
