Me too, I am trying to buy the car but cannot get in touch with him. Craigslist email robots suck pretty bad. I've always wanted a 61 or 62 vette and a hot rod is that much better, but usually they are restored trailer queens, or totally project.

Agree on the hood, that is however about the easy'est thing to change!

Well see if I can get him.

Ok, that went south... Older guy I take it. Wife does all his banking. Does not trust out of towners.

Me: I'll wire you the money at noon.
Seller: Oh no. I don't trust wires I have to give my bank account info to you.
Me: Ok, I'll get you a cashiers check.
Seller: Oh... I don't trust those, people fake those.
Me: Who do you bank with?
Seller: Chase.
Me: Great. We have Chase banks here. What if I get cash and deposit directly into your account.
Seller: That works if I can give the teller my account info over the phone.
Me: Ok.

I go to my bank. Hey, need to withdraw 28k from my savings.
Bank: Why?
Me: None of your business, its not a loan, its my money and I want it.
Bank: We cant give you that much without home office approval.
Me: Get it or give me ALL of my savings, checking and oh, my business accounts too.
Bank Branch Manager: Mr. 69LM1, why do you want this much cash?
Me: Like I said, none of your business.
Bank Branch Manager: Ok, I'll get it for you, but we will have to report this. We also have to go into the vault for this much money. Do you need it all now?
Me: Rolling eyes, whatever. Yes. I need it now. Today.

Get the cash finally. Go to Chase Bank.

Me: Hi, (plops $28,000 onto the cashiers counter) I'd like to deposit this into a account for one of your customers.
Chase: Sir, are you listed on the account?
Me: No. I am buying a car from someone who banks with you.
Chase: Why don't you send a wire?
Me: (rolling eyes) your customer does not trust them, and before you ask, no, he does not trust cashiers checks either.
Chase: Sir, it is against the law to deposit that much money into a account that does not belong to you. We cannot do that. In fact this is supposed to be reported.

Me: Screw it.

Back to my bank.

Me: (Plops $28,000 back onto counter) I'd like to redeposit this back into my account. Please.

Teller: Rolls Eyes.

Waiting for the DHS knock any moment......

Yes.... But man the banks. They've made it hard for a while to do anything by cash, now though its crazy insane.

I went through this twice with chase. Set a meeting with the highest chase person I could find and discussed my needs and made sure there would be no problems in the future. Never a problem again as long as I made a phone call.

My son tried to repay a $60, sixty dollar "loan" to me and ran into the same thing, not a signor on the account, he can't deposit 10 cents (cash). It was ok for him to deposit the $60 via a check though ... I was told that these banks are trying to avoid money "laundering"

wtf?

I work for a bank and although I'm no longer in the BSA area (Bank Secrecy Act - look it up), I know there are a lot of strange rules regarding the w/d and deposit of cash these days. Honestly, it's not the banks, it's the government. Banks couldn't care less how you do your banking, but the govt does. Seriously, as long as you pay your bills, banks couldn't give a flying kite what you do with your money. Blame the govt, and drug dealers and terrorists for these asinine rules.

As an aside, there is a wealthy guy here in my town who comes in once a week who withdraws $10,001 and comes back later in the week who deposits the money back into his account just to p!$$ off the govt bank examiners who have to review this stuff after we report it.

Honestly, sometimes it works to catch the bad guys, but most of the time it's just a PITA for law abiding citizens who deal with lots of cash. Plus, it's a great tool for the IRS to track your income for tax-tracking purposes. Another reason why I favor a national sales tax instead of an income tax, but that's a different discussion.

Starting to smell a rat here. Rich, had I not been 3 weeks post-op of another spinal fusion, I'd have gladly gone to help if the car REALLY ever was in Baltimore. I have a pretty good relationship with my bank. Honestly, the banks hate cash and they're not fond of me for not having a bank card. Maybe I'm too old and cynical, but when I wanna do banking it isn't with a machine.

Thanks. Nice enough guy. I really don't think it was a scam. The car is actually in New York, think he was advertising on several craigs list's...

Thanks for mentioning it.

Good luck with that back.

If interested we have thought about selling ours '62 Vette. Fresh 355 SBC and PG trans, original except for safety updates, (brakes, belts, etc). Last fall ran 6.70s in 1/8 mile.

Thanks, but that's probably a little more radical that I was looking for unless it was a cant pass this up kind of thing.
