I believe the early cars used the 4 clip style.

Original 69 Z28,s used 2 types of trim rings. 1st design used inner spring serrations to attach the ring. They went the full circumference of the ring. It is still available from GM, but is expensive. part # 9796696. It is 2" wide. It has a oblong type hole around the stem, with squared off corners. Originals used a black serration and the current avaiiable rings have a galvanized serration ring.

Later 2nd design types #3901708 used the 4 outer clips to retain them, the clips attached rite on the lip of the wheel, and they were slightly wider also 2&1/2". They had oval holes by the stems. They are a pain to get on and off and also sometimes the non moveable clips got in the way of the wheel balance weights. There are 2 different versions of this ring, the difference is a inner galvanized ring crimped into the ring to support it. 1st design has a flat ring and the later design had the ring with a lip.

The four clip were the first design, and the serrated around the circumference was second design.

A June car to my knowledge took the 4 clip rings with the narrow oval stem hole. Here are a couple reference pics of the factory issued (early) trim tings with the narrow stem hole and the 4 clips that are just a pleasure to get on and off. :)

In addition to the late model year trim rings that have the larger oval stem holes and the serrated retainer rings, there are these ones which have the stem holes notched from the inside of the rings. I believe these are the ones that were available over the counter for many years. You still see a lot of these on eBay but they are not assembly line correct and are easily spotted due to the notch.
