I want to say thanks to Brent396 for posting a heads up on the Craigs list ad on this site. Was advertised as being a special color orange sold Dana Z28 that had been sitting for 30 years. The guy selling it said people did not believe it was a orange car because the trim tag says it was British green. He showed me enough pics to convince me it was indeed orange and the order sheet even had the special paint code for the orange written on it. Protecto plate and a gm document list Dana and last night I got word back from NCRS that the dealer was Dana. Has orig engine, trans ,rear, no sign of any green paint anywhere that I can find so far. Looks like orig. exhaust. This car is very solid. Same orange that is on Kevin S's 427 68 Dana. This is fricken cool. Car just arrived awhile ago.:CharleySucks:

Wow Charley, I had a feeling that was a special car and we all saw it but you knew enough to buy it. So what are you going to do with it? With that original color I could see a set of 15" magnesium 5-spokes on it.

Yes that's the original color.

The Z paint code was still used for special paint when that car was built. They did not start using Z for British Green until that paint color became available in January 1968.

- - for special paint started January of 1968.

Thats the third 68 Z/28 I have seen in that color. The non striped Grabiak Z and another 68 DANA Z/28. In addition to Kevins DANA 427, I believe the Dale Armstrong SS DANA drag car was also Omaha Orange. It must have been the go to color at DANA...BKH

Really great score Charlie.... wow what an awesome find and really would clean up quite nicely with the exception of the paint...

damn looking at it I would be tempted to try and remove the top layer of paint if it were done in enamel.
I may try the front lower valence first... or a lower fender corner...

The reason I say this is the prep looks to be not very good and thus the problem areas will probably release well... around door handles creases etc.

Hood has been changed so the paint would be a bitch. Enough other stuff in body that I think I might just steam clean and then repaint.

That's a neat find for sure. The CL / eBay links are a nice addition to the site & we should all appreciate the members who spend their time doing this imo

So, what are you gonna do about the rolled rear fender lips? Fix 'em when you repaint it?
I've had 2 CA cars with em rolled and although I wish they hadn't been, it also seems like it's part of a car's DNA & heritage, so to speak

Leave the rear wheel areas as is, in my opinion.

I've always used a small crescent wrench. Just snug it up and bend down into place. Scoot over a 1/2 an inch, repeat. Might have to go back in a couple places, but you should be able to get it close to perfect.

Even though, the Dana hoods are flimsy, that one for sale would have looked good.

Charley Lillard
07-28-2017, 01:46 AM
I'm not sure how that Dana hood would look with stripes. Steam cleaned under the car today. I forgot just how messy that always is. Probably spent a hour under it steam cleaning. Kept smelling gas and just figured it was fumes from the gas tank etc. Finally see gas pouring out a hole in fuel line. I have no idea how much leaked out. As I'm cutting the tubing so I can slip some rubber line over it the gas is running down my arm into my arm pit, into my shoes etc. That gas burns !!!

Good Job. Charley Is this the Car that was in Oregon? I spoke to a seller that was listing it for his friend, If I remember correctly. I was struggling getting a bead on values as I was neg with a co-worker who has given up on His restoration of his Uncles LOS 12D 1968 Z28. (Which I did purchase).
Great Car. The 68s need some Love at times,,,,,,

Yes this is that car. The guy that had it for the last 30 years bought it just for the engine because he had bought back his other 68 Z28 for 500.00 minus engine. He had lost his other Z in a divorce and somehow the engine for it got removed and the car had been seized and sold at auction. He never got around to yanking the engine and thru the years realized he should leave the engine in this car. I think now that he sold this car he and his Son are going to restore his other Z. Nice guy. It wasn't cheap if you compare it to what you can buy a restored 68Z for but it's a special car that needs to be saved. I was delighted at just how solid this car is.

Gotta check Craigslist! I love mid 70's big Kawasaki's. Thursday, I was sitting in a meeting and took my morning glance at CL and I almost had a heart attack. There listed for $500 was a '74 Z1 just rolled out of a barn. Looked all stock and unmolested. I know these bikes like the back of my hand and everything was there. The ad said it was put away in '80 due to a broken exhaust collar stud. Ran back to my office (didn't have my cell) after the meeting and it was sold. It sold in about 2 hours.

there are some names in this article on the first Dana 427 Camaro. There may be a chance that some may have info on your car. Some may know the original owner if the cars were both raced back in the day. may be worth a shot to try and contact them

I am trying to understand what is being discussed - these body colored Rally Wheels as I have never heard of them or seen them. I have a question . . .

Was it only 1968 special paint cars that could get them from the factory?

I believe some of the Grabiak Chevrolet special-paint '68 Zs had body color rallys as well.

The photo of the Z I posted in post #47 is one of these with painted wheels. Is it known not to be real or what?? It was supposed to be!

How would an assembly line painter know to paint the Rally Wheels body color on a special paint ordered 1968 Z/28? Is there some documentation? An Exception Control Letter Sheet dealing with this?

On the 70 Chevelle S.C. Tricentennial Editions, the wheels are painted body color, and the instructions are specifically called out on the build sheet.

Rally wheels have an X for the color code in the Wheel color box if they are argent, other wise they would have a color code indicated.

Here is a 67 RS/SS 396 in special order orange with the wheels/

So based on the photo above, it's not just 1968 SP Z/28 and SS cars. It also applies to SP 1967 Z/28 and SS cars too. Or is it just those cars that were painted in "Road Commission Orange" - that's the color right?

I believe the color is 1968 Chevy Truck Orange

info from paint.com site.......

"This orange automotive paint color is most commonly known as Omaha Orange. Other common color promotional names include Tangier Orange, Orange, and Fork Lift Orange. The color formulation has been used between 1930 and 1992, primarily by Chevrolet; but also by GM, GMC, Studebaker, Ford, Reo, Diamond T, Chrysler, Dr Pepper, Toyota, and HomeDepot. We have records of this color appearing on the following models: Chevy Truck, GMC, Studebaker Truck, Ford Special Order / Fleet, Chevrolet, Astro, Reo Truck, Blazer, Suburban, Chrysler Special Order / Fleet, Chevrolet Special Order / Fleet, and Diamond T Truck. See the full detailed list below."

I personally inspected the in question Grabiak 68 Z/28. There is no doubt in my mind the wheels were painted Omaha Orange from new. The original WTGT tires where stacked next to the car as well. I have also seen a special order Verdoro Green Z/28 with a white VT and the green matching rally wheels. Why GM did this I am not sure, but it was put into use on these two cars and others as well it would seem...BKH

I'm starting to wonder why the hood was missing. Maybe it had one of Dana's glass hoods and someone took it off. I need to talk to older owners.

Haven't you ever used a "Rag Wrench"

IT would be interesting to find out of the special paint chevrolet's all models if the wheels were painted the special order color- even if they were normally black or normally argent - reason I say this is there are Chevelles with AO's (Spoked wheels) which were painted all gold with matching broadcast sheets. - wondering if there are full hubcap wheels which were normally black which on special order color were painted the special order color.

the early Camaro aftermarket Hurst shifter used a 2 piece welded offset neck vs the one piece stamped steel offset neck that came out about 1968-69 and is still used today

Charley, here are a few pics of an early Camaro Hurst shifter.

Did a little sanding this morning the Dana car..... definitely found some trace of black under the crappy repaint on both doors and both rear qtrs. Also sanded the front fender and found nothing. Let's see if I can get some pictures up here for you guys.

Thanks, sure would be cool if we could confirm this is the same car from the picture. Our findings seem to lead that way but we cant make out any specific shapes or letters. But we definitely found black in right areas

I love when people find cars that have a special history or special drivetrain pedigree. Makes me think of the 67 red z28 that had its original engine returned that was in a ford t-bucket. We need to find the gold and then painted white 67 camaro motion test mule car.
