Beautiful car in a really underwhelming Ebay auction, but perhaps there's a deal to be had.

There's definitely some issues with this cars authenticity! Here are some previous discussions:

Yeah I was gonna say I do not like the stampings on several of the components..

Here are the deck stamps and build sheet for this car...

I noticed that the engine code on the POP is listed only as "KO"...not "CKO". Checked our 70 L78 Nova and the POP says CKO :dunno:

Maybe this is a Chevelle thing...but , I would have thought the correct code would appear. The embossed section is also remarkably clear for a 47 year old item.

All the C means is Chevrolet ...KO code.
This started very late on 69 - 70 titled first gen Camaros and of course for Model Year 70 GM cars and light duty truck.
B O P C did the same thing on drive lines

+1

FWIW, the POP looks OK but way too clean. The block is a restamp and would have actually looked pretty good with the cylinder head on if only they had stamped the VIN the way KC did them ;) All the other stamps also look suspect, especially the axle tube. That build sheet is one of the worst I've seen and should go right into the trash bin. If for some reason this was a real L78, the fake provenance has killed it. It's a shame, looks like a beautiful car.

I get what you mean about the 'C' standing for Chevrolet, but I've seen other L78 Nova docs from the fall of 69 and they have CKO on the POP. Why would Chevelle be different..??

Same thing on the axle code...our POP says CBT...not 'BT'..

I would like to hear from some of the Chevelle gurus...always happy to learn something new.

I've seen them both ways, no idea what the rhyme or reason is. Maybe someone more experienced with POPs can chime in as to why.

Maybe the press operator didn't know 3 digit code #'s existed a couple of years ago when he punched that mint , no patina , nos reproduction plate. At least he etch a sketched the mint nos
tape like a seal a meal.
Notice the rust stains on the book and not a flaw on the plate. .....

I looked at all my 70 & Up POP's.....8 of them,,,they all have 3 Digit codes.

Here is a 70 L78 POP off Dale's site which has 2 digit codes. It looks like he has edited some information for privacy reasons.

I've known the seller for a long time, Tom is a very fair guy and has never steered me wrong. I sold one of his cars to Reggie Jackson a few years back (a Scott Tiemann restored 65 GTO), he'll work with you. He's an honest guy, he'll encourage you to have the car inspected and won't be hiding anything. I believe he bought the car from a friend that was having some money issues. Tom isn't making a dime on this car.

Regardless of the car's authenticity - it's a nice car that runs and drives incredibly well. I think the only change from assy build is the interior color change to black (from Parchment). If I know Tom, he'll work with you on the asking price.

My .02 (which is worth exactly that...haha)
