If I'm not mistaken, did I or did I not see this same type of air cleaner, that someone called a "Nascar" air cleaner on a Black 69 L78 Nova SS Barn find on Ebay approximately a week ago? The car sold for $39K. I was telling some friends about this and the air cleaner and I have never seen a Nova with such air cleaner. Well here's one currently listed on Ebay and I was all but certain Nova did not come with this type of air cleaner. After I saw this listing, I'm convinced now. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

Here is the direct link to the auction: I think it's actually a 68 piece since it has the clearance bump for the AIR pump.....

Here is what I know about these units:
The one from PA is a Chevelle/Impala BB unit with the 5 window and the "dent" on the drivers side for the oil fill.
The Camaro/Nova units were SB units with 4 windows and the 1967 has one "dent" for the distributor and the 1968 units have 2 "dents" one for the distributor and one for the air pump.

I'm a Nova guy, so I didn't know this unit even existed until I saw it on that 69 L78 Nova. So is this a Camaro Air Cleaner only, or could this have been a factory install on a Nova, or was that air cleaner just something someone threw on that 69 L78 Nova many years ago leading everyone to believe it was factory because it was a barn find? I don't think this air cleaner was ever a Nova option. Or was it?

I think the air cleaner that was originally posted is one I have listed on ebay. It is also listed here for less.
Here is a link to the listing on ebay:

This unit is a 1967 Camaro unit with the 4 windows.
Here is another that just sold:

These cowl plenum air cleaners were race parts. Someone certainly could have bought one from the Chevy dealer and installed on a Nova when new.
Thanks,

So to answer my question, this was NOT a factory Nova option. This was more of an over the counter race part you could buy and put on your car. Kinda like an Edelbrock carb, breather, or intake. This air cleaner wasnt offered as an option on a Nova. It was an OTC you could buy and put on yourself like and aftermarket performance part.

It wasn’t an option on any car, including Camaro and Chevelle, but is an original GM part, much like a crossram or factory headers.

It was an option on Camaro...lots of documented factory orders.

Mark,
Maybe factory ordered, but not factory installed, correct?

Yes, Jason. Ordered with all other options on the car and shipped in the trunk for the dealer to install. Cowl plenum and headers done this way.

From what I'm understanding, this very well could have been a factory option on a Camaro, but not on a Nova, although it was readily available OTC to use on anything.
